Piano, 71, was a co-architect of Paris' Georges Pompidou centre, popularly known as Beaubourg, a ground-breaking and controversial achievement when it was constructed in the 1970s.

He also designed the Paul Klee museum in Bern, the "Parco della Musica" auditorium in Rome and the Ushibuka bridge in Kumatomo, Japan.

The jury said Piano's work was "an extraordinary and remarkable combination of art, architecture and artistic engineering."
