USS TEXAS Battleship: If all the financial details can be worked out, the USS TEXAS (BB-35) will likely have a new home in Galveston Harbor. Unlike the USS ALABAMA (BB-60) and the USS NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55) which are steam turbine powered, the USS TEXAS (BB-35) is powered by triple-expansion steam reciprocating engines.

The USS ALABAMA is on display at USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park, Mobile AL and the USS NORTH CAROLINA is on display at 1 Battleship Road, Wilmington, NC.

addendum to USS Battleship posting:

Gulf Shores, Alabama is the nearest (approx 51 miles) full service beach resort to the USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park, Mobile AL.

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina is the nearest (approx 13 miles) full service beach resort to the USS NORTH CAROLINA 1 Battleship Row, Wilmington NC.

The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation contracted Stoss Landscape Urbanism to provide a potential plan for a remade, pedestrian friendly waterfront in Galveston. The parking would be moved to garages that could also have greenspace or other pedestrian space (like the sand on the garage in the lower right of the photo). No action was taken but the wharves board may form a committee as this is a priority of the city.

The company I work for (BBC Chartering), will most likely be carrying these over from Europe and off load them at the terminal, once completed.  We've carried many of these, including the others in Galveston.   I'll definitely attend that operation.

Did they bring any of the container crane for Barbour's Cut or Bayport Terminal? I remember leaving work one day at Exxon Baytown and seeing the new larger ones for the Panamax ships at Barbours Cut.

Good Question.   We did not.   The ships that are capable of carrying those and really specialized and Amazing machines.   You probably have seen a few of our vessels from your crane at Bludworth Shipyard, though.

I worked there a long time ago but do remember a container crane being unloaded there inside the 610 bridge once a long time ago.

Controversy brewing on the docking location of the USS Texas Battleship.  Katie’s Seafood House does not want the ship in front of its restaurant claiming it will kill its waterfront views (for which it has won awards).

This could be a really dumb PR move to take this to the media.

Perhaps East River should be considered again as a docking location?

The owners/managers of Katie's Seafood House state the restaurant benefits from waterfront views its owners did not create and do not maintain and that the proposed docking location site for the USS Texas will block, or otherwise degrade these waterfront views.

Landry's, through their Deputy General Counsel, acknowledged that the proposed docking location for the USS Texas will likely degrade the waterfront views at several of its restaurants, but stated the ship's location in the harbor will offset this by increasing tourism in the harbor (and presumably elsewhere on Galveston Island), thereby increasing income for Landry's-owned restaurants and others (not owned by Landry's) located in the harbor area.

Now there is a petition with over 1,000 signatures to block the battleship Texas move…

In Mobile AL, the USS ALABAMA (battleship) and USS DRUM (submarine) are on display at Battleship Memorial Park, a nearby (about 2 miles) but separate area from the Port of Mobile. The respective activities of a working port and a maritime museum area do not, to any significant extent, interfere with one another.

The port will fill slips 38/39 and 40/41 to add 30 acres of cargo space. It will also demolish the grain elevator to free up more space for cargo. The port is also working with the Port of Houston (which owns a significant portion of Pelican Island) to evaluate how to develop both entities' holdings there.

View from Katie's Seafood House...U S.S. Texas in the background.   I'm told the proposal is to move it to the foreground just on the other side of that catwalk (that leads to the Ocean Star Museum).  Hopefully a solution is found that satisfies all parties.
