  1. Don't know where you live but in our neighborhood, phone books were delivered last week during spring break. They were somewhat carelessly thrown on the easements or directly on the sidewalks. Since many families were out of town, some neighbors gathered the phone book bags and placed them in the home owners' back yards so as not to scream "I'm not home" for a week. BTW, some in our 'hood did receive a 2nd bag of phone books. Don't know if they were the same books or different brand or what. We didn't get the additional bag at our house.

Sorry about your mailbox, you may want to check the local pawn shops and antique stores or Craig's list. Then again, it may already be installed on a home in the next county.

Thank you for the feedback. The mail box was stolen while we were at work. The two phone book packages were identical and delivered on Tuesday. We alerted our neighbors in case someone is working the area.

  2. FYI...

Our front porch antique mail box was stolen yesterday afternoon (3/23/10). Unfortunately, the mail box contained the daily mail as well. The mail box was heavy and bulky. We are counting our blessings they did not get into the house (protected by alarm) or garage (always locked). One thing that did not make sense, we found a 2nd package of the recent phone book directory in the back yard with the gate being left opened. We think it might of been a ruse by the perpetrator(s) to gain access to the back yard. We filed a police report and bought a cheap mail box.

  3. With business expected to weaken further in 2009, the company said it will cut 5,000 jobs, or nearly 6 percent of its 84,000-strong global work force.

Earlier this month, Schlumberger said it would cut up to 1,000 of its 19,000 North American employees, including up to 100 of its 5,000 jobs in the Houston area. But before today it had not provided details about cuts in international regions.

  4. Bummer...I was hoping it would take off but it had a lot of short-comings as mentioned by other folks. I stopped by several times...tried the sandwiches and coffee (good but pricey). I do remember and appreciate them opening immediately after Hurricane Ike and making an effort to provide hot coffee and food.

  5. We could round them up and have a yearly "Heights Grocery Cart Derby" off Heights Blvd. We could have teams representing the local neighborhoods, i.e., Houston Heights, Woodland Heights, Sunset Heights, etc. Of course, any monies from donations or fees go to designated charities.

  6. Is it me or does the Heights area have a problem with abandoned grocery carts outside apartments, on sidewalks and in ditches? Is it considered a theft (misdemeanor) in Houston with the removal of a cart from the premises? IMHO...stray carts become a public safety issue suggesting that signs of neighborhood deterioration, if not promptly addressed, will lead to further decay, crime and loss of security.

  7. I love the King Williams District. I frequented the area (eateries, art galleries, & festivals) back in the early '90s while attending college in SA. The neighborhood made such an impression that I sought a similar neighborhood in Houston and found the Houston Heights (current resident). Our goal is to hopefully retire in SA and find a home in the King Williams District. I often check the following realty and association sites:

  8. I agree with the previous post regarding the recent gentrification in the discussed area. In the last 4 years, companies like "Bastian" and "Tricon" have been building new homes in this area. All of these changes have improved the area for the better. I have yet to see a slowdown even in this economy. If you follow the streets (Alexander & Dorothy) going north towards downtown Heights, you will see the building frenzy. Unfortunately, this new development has also done away with some nice, older homes worthy of renovation.

  9. I wish we had a "Chick-fil-A" off Heights Blvd. I can just picture it...corner location in a Queen Anne architecture style building.

14th and Herkimer "Bungalow Revival". It is coming along nicely...I remember seeing when they moved this house into the Heights.
