Since I replied to you, I did myself respond to a 3-year-old post. However, I did on purpose knowing it was an old post and that the person I responded to might not ever see it. Normally I wouldn't do that, but he had asked an important question I had the answer to, so I made an exception, just in case he came back or anyone else was interested.

Also, by sheer coincidence, I came across another post of mine yesterday in a thread similar to this one, where someone had replied earlier this year to a very old post. In this case, it was a 10-year-old post - in fact, 521 weeks (10 years and 1 week) had passed since the previous post in early 2007. So I replied to the 2017 person and asked if that was some kind of record for longest time for a reply. If it was, it's not anymore. You beat it!

I will be on the lookout for your pix.

Oldies but goodies! I almost replied to my reply on the post about the wax museum we used to have here, lol

the Valley Fruit Stand was located at 1900 Franklin Ave. (near the Hamilton intersection)

this would have been a couple blocks away from the now abandoned Gribble Stamp building, on the east side of the 59 overpass on Franklin

in the 1932 directory, the closest matches i could find were these residences:

    1902 Franklin: William Knorba

    1908 Franklin: Miss Verna Higgins

What a gorgeous picture-I love the way this house looks. If you look at the lower right hand side of the photo-you can see on the curb in front of the fruit stand it says "1900 Franklin".

  3. Hi Firebird65,

Jajajaj, oh no not in any way feeling butt hurt :0) I don't have too much time to surf the net and I finally had a chance and I ran with it. I don't mind that people have moved on or not read any replies or posts of mine. Every so often I get nostalgic and I remember something from my youth and I look it up and if I find what I am looking for-hey, the world is a better place to me. I figure if I am looking at a post that interests me, no matter how old it is-then someone else who hasn't been on awhile must be looking at it too. Or not-the sun is still coming up either way. Thanks for your concern and hope you are doing good after the storm. Feel free to write again if you would like to chat.

    ~S.

P.S. I will be posting some pix in a bit-watch out! LOL

many thnx for that pdf link and info. I had heard differing comments when I first scouted for the Pink Pusscat Club. One mentioned that it was on Main, really close to the courthouse and that it had moved. I personally do not know too much about it and the internet makes it seem as if it never existed. I just found the location of where the sign was in the photo.

Perhaps it had 2 signs? One on the Main side and one on the back end of the building?

Hi Abrahan-I thought I remembered Pink Pussycat being closer to the edge of downtown. Maybe Congress and Crawford? Or maybe I am dreaming? It might have been another hootchie cootchie kind of place? I remember there were pictures (or paintings) of women in circle (not square) frames in various stages of undress. And around the corner on the left side next to this place was an adult movie theater? I am going to pass by there sometime soon and take another look and see if anything looks familiar. Will get back to you on it.

    The Pink Pussycat! ^_^

This came up in another topic. It was at 219 Main at Congress.

Picture is from early 1970s. Sorry for the quality.

Was The Pink Pussycat ever located elsewhere in Downtown? I thought I remembered it being nearer to Minute Maid Stadium-where there is now a bail bonding company. Also, was there an adult movie theater around the corner but next to it?

Yes the old rectory was torn down. But the plan from the beginning was to refurbish it not raze it. For lots of reasons i won't get into, the refurbishment plan was no longer viable. But i will say that one complexity that did not exist a hundred years ago is that today there has to be a much more defined space that seperates the living/sleeping space of the pastor and the church offices. The eventual plan is to have a seperate rectory and a seperate church office. Our pastor is a saint and would never hurt or abuse anyone but the seperated space is a must in today's world and the new plan accomidates that better.

Once the decision of razing the old rectory was made then the Foley House plan made a lot of sense. Foley house gets preserved, that city block gets cleared away for future city of houston development. The church gets a new office, etc...

The parish could have razed the old rectory and built new construction instead, but it should be noted that they chose instead the harder task of litteraly moving a building and restoring it that otherwise would have set empty.

Yes, we are not HISD indeed.

Was trying to recall if it was at the Foley house or the Cohn house where Annunciation preschoolers attended class back in the early 80s?

Incarnate Word Academy rebuilt it's buildings in the late 1980's, after selling the Mother House Convent and adjacent former Marian High School campuses in Bellaire.

I attended Annunciation Catholic School in the early 80's, there are quite a few Annunciation alumni out there. And Incarnate Word Academy was our sister school.

  8. Just found this article from back in May 2017 from the Houston Chronicle saying that a new food hall is being added in the building. Set to open early next year. Looking forward to going just so I can admire the inside of what used to be Texas Commerce bank. I remember going to Texas Commerce with my mom when I was little and thinking "wow, this must be what a palace looks like", lol. Here is the link: http://www.chron.com/entertainment/restaurants-bars/article/New-food-hall-set-for-downtown-Houston-11141556.php#photo-12890948

"Are you sure this was not at Telephone and Wheeler instead of Telephone and Winkler? I know about the house at Telephone and Wheeler with the circular drive and Palm trees. It is next to the Houston Parks and Recreation building" ...isuredid's post, a while ago. post #8, above.

isuredid was right about the location, Telephone and Wheeler, here's an aerial shot. I'm wondering if that wasn't Mr. MacGregors estate. Does anyone know? His wife donated the land nearby for a park.Griggs Rd. is in the top left corner, above the estate. This is very close to Riverside Terrace. Says at the time of MacGregor's death, he was thinking of developing the area, believe it was in the 1920's he died.

It's ironic that a trailer park community sits next to the property now, the palm trees are huge, beautiful. The estate had two roads leading to the actual mansion, you can follow them in the aerial shot to the house, sits to the right.

You can still see the foundations of the house on GoogleEarth, there is a business that sits behind the location of the actual mansion.

NenaE-I can't see the pix you posted and I am looking at Google maps aerial view of Telephone and Wheeler. Can you tell me where the foundations of the house are? I admit I have the worst eyesight. I can't even see the palm trees. I do believe I see the roads ?! Help please!

That one is the Brady House (HAIF mention here). It's got tax issues etc. and so apparently is in legal limbo. The interior is pretty much gutted and there had been a small fire on the 3rd floor.

Great set of photos, isuredid. Preservation is helped by awareness and most Houstonians never notice old buildings still lingering so they are seldom missed once gone.

These pix are from 30AUG17-what do y'all think? Someone living there or not? Doesn't look very livable but there is a trash can and a mailbox.

  11. Okay, really embarrassed y'all-I had orginally said the house had been demolished but it's not located on the corner of Milby and Wilmer like I thought. It's next door to the lot that is on the corner of Milby and Garrow. Posting pix to show you what is there. Pix are from30AUG17. Looks like the property is occupied.

  12. I remember it was absolutely CREEPY! I remember figures of Clark Gable and Carol Lombadr standing next to a Dusenburg automobile as one of the features. The area was wide open space for the most part, but I remember the drive in theatre AND the KPRC station as I asked my mom if that was where Chris Chandler lived (A popular Houston TV personality of the time). I was about 4 or 5 at the time.

That is about the only thing I remember about the wax museum and it's the figures of Gable and Lombard next to the vehicle but I thought they were Bonnie and Clyde, don't ask why, hahaha
