  1. why?

well, the two commentors I read seemed like they lived in the neighborhood, so they're wealthy low form of human life who might have a say in this thing.

The comments on his blog were tame - not at all like the typical chron.com drivel. I consider myself somewhat conservative and chron.com commentors strike me as ignorant right wing reactionaries that border on racist.

  2. More and more movies are not being filmed in LA because of production costs. Many cities, such as Houston, give incentives for productions that come to their areas. I don't know if this will ever happen with the dome, but it would be totally cool if it did.

The question that first needs to be answered is whether there is a need for this kind of studio. Filmmaking has become much more common in Austin for a variety of reasons, but pirmarily because of the high concentration of creative types with experience and skills necessary for filmmaking. For this idea to be successful it would have to be as an extension of the Austin film industry. If the established parties there see value in a large studio, then this could work. But I don't know how they view it.

  3. The ones thinking the Dome should be a movie studio are the ones that are high.

Yea.. people from all over the world will come here... to ... what... stand behind a glass wall and watch a movie being made?

I've lived here all my life... Houston is not some "georgeous" city.... it was "georgeous" decades ago before they knocked down 90% of the buildings, built a bunch of boxes and cardboard strip centers every block, became a homeland for 90% of foreigners coming from south of the border, and every neighborhood from those days became a hood.

Compared to 1975... I'd say Houston is pretty damn fugly.

Even when it was the bears, I knew it was the immigrants.

  4. I enjoy the Midtown scene, it's almost a fixture of nightlife here. On a side note, in listening to a local radio show this morning, they mentioned how Houston needs an "Entertainment District", similar to The Gaslamp District in San Diego, RiverCenter in San Antonio, and Chicago's Uptown Square, being the 4th largest city, it's suprising we don't have one persay. I was hopeful several years ago, it would be be Main St., wow, what happened? That scene is now dead IMO. Rant.

Is the sushi restaurant dead? I haven't seen any activity lately.

  5. Studios will film anywhere that makes sense 1) within the context of the story and 2) where it makes financial sense to do so. I'm not saying this Astrodome plan is a guaranteed success - far from it. However, if Houston can find a way to work with the current film incentive money offered by the state and with the established film industry in Austin, then there is a chance this could be feasible.

Film making is a business and no business every came to Houston for scenery, weather or history. They came to make money.

  6. the second one is awesome....

    That's the "action" shot ;-)

I wanted to get closer in the first video, but the sidewalk was closed off, with a police office guarding it. I didn't really push the issue.

I would love to be a regular contributor of downtown construction photos to haif. Now if I could just figure out how to get photos from my iphone to haif/internet, we'll be set.

  7. Hey, long time first time.

Any updates on this? I work downtown and can see this building from my office. Needless to say I am VERY eager for something to happen with it. During my lunch break I walked by the building and it looked as though there was zero activity. I did see a bulldozer parked in a loading dock, but that's it. I don't think I've seen anything remotely resembling activity since I started working downtown (january 2009)
