  1. I know they are having problems absorbing these towers, but I have to admit they are some of the best looking buildings that have been built inside the loop in the last 5-10 years. They look spectacular from the park and even better from 288 or Almeda. I love how the Museum District has towers that randomly pop up out of the trees. This area has almost formed a skyline of its own.

    The Mosaic towers have indeed formed their own skyline...and that new skyline blocks out half of the previously fantastic vista of the downtown skyline looking north up Almeda. :(

  2. I miss the Hwy 21 Cafe in North Zulch. They had the best Chicken Fried Steak I've ever had.

    That qualifies as Brazos Valley, right? I mean, it drains to the Navasota River, and that's tributary to the Brazos...

    [Oops...just looked at a map and realized that that side of North Zulch actually drains to Bedias Creek, which is tributary to the Trinity River. Gotta go to the other side of the tracks to west North Zulch to get in the Navasota River watershed.]

    I still miss that CFS. The next nearest CFS to my grandpa's place is Sodolak's in Bryan, and their CFS is just a step above cardboard.

  3. where are some of the best watering holes to go to after work? I recently moved to Silverlake and I'm in my 20s.

    I was thinking of TGIFs but that would seem strange to go to a restaurant's bar.

    I've already been to Scooter's Beer and Burgers with a friend and it was OK.

    That was my home away from home for a few years when I lived on Dixie Farm Road back in the mid-90's. I had a lot of good times there...does anyone know if Billy still lives in the camper of the junked pick-up truck at the body shop next door? Sweet guy...we used to bring him home with us to stay in a warm house when it got too cold in the winters.

    I have a special place in my heart for Scooters. I can specifically remember the very first time I saw the place. It was early 1983, I was 10 years old and me and my grandma and cousin were headed down Telephone Road towards Corpus. We pulled up to the light, and as I looked to my right and I was intrigued by the name "Scooter's", Prince's new song "Little Red Corvette" came on the radio...first time I'd ever heard it. For some reason, that one memory has stuck with me through the years.

    I later named a dog after that icehouse. The dog was as crazy as most of the regulars at Scooter's.

    It was well before my time (before I was born), but as all loyal Cougar fans know, UH's Elmo Wright invented the end zone dance!!!

    As far as Astrodome memories, mine go back to watching the Astros with Jerry Mumphrey, Dickie Thon, Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz, Nolan Ryan, and many hundreds since then.

    I remember a hell of a game in the regular season between the Astros and Mets. Unless my memory is fooling me, it was Mike Scott vs. Dwight Gooden.

    My dad used to take me to tons of tractor pulls, mud bogs, demolition derbies, etc. Until I was in college, I probably saw more tractor pulls in the Dome than baseball games.

    I was there when the guy dropped from the ceiling of the Dome in a barrel and died.

  5. I realize stores play background music designed for the demographics, so I have always wondered why they often play 80`s new wave at this store. I thought maybe it was to make some people uneasy with the unfamiliar music? This am, in the short time I was there, they played the Cure, the Clash, and Psychedelic Furs...where does the music come from? Club HEB? I am not complaining and actually love when they play the music, but just curious about the thought behind it.

    Funny, I've heard nothing but classic rock every time I'm in line at the Walgreen's at OST and Scott St.

    That would be kinda like playing nothing but hip-hop in the Belden's grocery store on Braeswood.

  6. I don't think Dallas would be willing to walk away empty-handed.

    It's hard not to be a conspiracy-theorist on higher education funding when you remember what happened back in 2004.

    If you'll recall, the presidents of UH and Texas Tech worked the state legislature for several years to get "excellence funding" to help move those two universities forward towards "Tier I" status. After their years of hard work, UH and TT were rewarded by the state lege with something like $17 million per year for two years ($6 million for Texas Tech and $11 million for UH each year for two years is what I recall).

    Those "excellence funds" to UH and TT were promptly vetoed by Gov Rick Perry, citing the state budget deficit. However, Perry turned around and 3 months later and awarded $50 million of "discretionary funds" to UT-Dallas as a "Business Enterprise Fund" to spur business development.

    As the legendary Bill Yeoman says, "It's hard being a Cougar."

  7. Brown has been the color of choice on METRO's maps. I think it'd be perfect, ese.

    No surprise after METRO announced the "black line" (SE Line) and the "white line" (Richmond).

  8. There was always the idea that the stadium could raise revenue by renting it out for high school football. TSU might be a better fit.

    How is that a better deal than what the Dynamo have with UH right now? Only improvement I can see is a better share of the concessions revenue for the Dynamo, and possibly better parking than they have on weeknights at UH.

    Is that really enough for the Dynamo to put up tens of millions of dollars?

    Not to mention, TSU is hard-pressed to justify spending money on a new stadium when they've just started playing football on campus (in front of hundreds of faithful).

    Based on the fact that it's taken us 172 years to get 4,600 residents downtown, I predict it will be November of 2381 AD before we hit 10,000 downtown residents.

    I should have actually looked at sevfiv's links.

    The first one that sevfiv listed includes that part of Institute Place that I was describing. That map is part of Panels 8 and 12 from Niche's post above.

    From my reading of sevfiv's map, Institute Place predates South Union (aka "South End Sunnyside South Union Extension" per the map). It appears that South Union was platted out of Institute Place.

    For reference, part of the property just south of the intersection of Peerless and Corder, shown as Institute Place Tracts 19 and 20, is now platted as South Union Section One...where I reside. I don't think Tracts 19 and 20 exactly match the boundaries of South Union Section One, but that's the vicinity.

  11. I guess I can easily answer my own question...looking at the maps (5354B8), some of the property east of Peerless is platted as Institute Place - Gladitch.

    I'm also interested in the history of Institute Place, which obviously predates construction of SH 288 (or at least SH 288 in its current alignment).

    By the way, anyone know anything about the "Fountains at Peerless"? It's an extremely odd-looking subdivision off of Peerless. There is no actual improvement on the site right now (it's vacant land just north of A-Rocket Moving & Storage). I remember seeing the Variance Notice on the site over the last year or two (or three?), so it's a recent subdivision. The plat, per HCAD, is one cul-de-sac, surrounded by 47 lots. However, not all the lots have access to the cul-de-sac! They are stacked three deep on each side of the cul-de-sac. The lots are typically on the order of 30'x50', so they're obviously some kind of dense development, but how do you build on lots with no access to the road? I don't know how townhome developments are typically set up...would there be interior private driveways set on these lot lines?

  12. Don't be scared off by all these wusses.

    I truly believe that most crime happens to people that are looking for it. If you're not selling or buying drugs, you should be fine.

    Don't worry about your dog getting stolen; keep a dog to keep from getting your possessions stolen! It helps if your dog is a barker.

    By the way, I can walk my Inner Loop streets at night too...but having a dog doesn't hurt. ;)

    I think people are afraid of my mullet, too.

  13. Anyway, it's Houston's fault for not promoting development of the property...and no, putting an Earl Sheibs or a car dealership or apartment complex there ain't gonna cut it! We need something fun and exciting.

    The purist in me would like to say that the City of Houston shouldn't show favoritism by promoting one tract of land over all others, I know that's not realistic or even a good idea (e.g., see BallparkatUnionStationEnronFieldAstrosFieldMinuteMaidPark, Discovery Green, or the proposed Dynamo Stadium.) Some tracts should be promoted for development over others.

    So, I do have to agree with you that in some ways, the City of Houston could do more to promote development of the Astroworld tract. It's in a very good location, very visible. But it's not real high on the priority list right now compared to some other things.

    I would bet that you'll hear something on the Astroworld tract once a plan is firmed up with the potential Astrodome convention center/hotel.

    At the very least they could put a SUPER Original Timmy Chans there! Bee-otches!

    At this time, I can't comment on that. Anything you are hearing at this point in time is just rumor. ;)
