  1. Account from a friend who lives closeby:

"Drunk jerk and girlfriend were fighting in an elderly homeowners yard. Homeowner stepped out and said something to the couple. Drunk jerk threatened the homeowner. Homeowner got his gun and shot drunk jerk in the stomach. Drunk jerk taken to hospital, wound was not life threatening. Police arrested homeowner. According to Martin Hajovsky, both drunk jerk and homeowner have been released."

  2. I got an email suggestion today to keep car keys next to the bed. If you feel threatened, push the panic button. Neighbors are more likely to hear your car alarm than your home alarm, and also, it might just scare them off altogether.

6:30 last Thursday morning, still dark outside. I happened to be sleeping on the couch in the front room, which I haven't done since Hurricane Ike. I heard a voice speaking louder than a normal speaking voice, but not an angry or yelling voice. I waited for it to keep moving down the street but it did not. Looked out and he was at my neighbor across the street's house. She is a very nice senior woman. She would not open her door, and he was asking for gas or gas money. Particularly odd since he had driven into her driveway. A neighbor next door came and sent him on his way. white guy, baseball cap and a jacket (notable since it is hot outside), beigeish SUV. Come to find out he had done the same to another house around the corner. He saw one guy leave for work and then knocked on the door. The other occupant was there and sent him on his way. The police think they are actually knocking to see if anybody home or possibly to push their way in if the door is opened.

    Be careful.

  3. For particular loose dogs, unless they have bitten a human, nobody will come to get them, but if you call BARC and tell them you have a problem with loose dogs in your area, they will send officers to do a sweep. DOn't expect to see them immediately though. BARC doesn't have the budget to provide the man power to respond to particular loose dogs, there are so many.

The Norhill esplanade has been a "defacto" dog park for at least 10, if not 15 years, so I would also not expect it to change. Perhaps Woodland Heights could be petitioned to put up signs indicating there is a mostly fenced dog park in the area and also that all dogs must be on leash. But probably easier for you to find another place to run your kids. I don't run my dogs in kid parks, even though they may be more convenient to me.

I love to take my dogs to the fenced dog parks with swimming ponds. It gives them a safe environment to be a pack animal for a little bit, which dogs need. My dogs love to run and swim with others.

Also, if I see a petowner walking wiht their dog without a leash with the exception of the above mentioned type places, I will ask them to put their dog on a leash. But I am pretty bold, too. If I see an unneutererd male, I also mention that it might be time for a snip. wacko.gif

  4. just a few minutes ago an unmarked car/plain clothes cop (badge around his neck) "pulled over" a guy riding his bike down the street next to the regions bank, Allston/11th. That's a first! We don't have the constable patrol program over here and so I suspect investigators are out trying to figure out this arson thing.

The last day or so I have seen many law enforcement officers sitting in their trucks, driving about. They are watching. But it seems he knows where they are watching, and moves just out of range. cat and mouse.

  5. Personally, I haven't heard of any sightings as of late. I do know that from the Woodland Heights forum, the person spearheading the project wrote that BARC is now coming in to do general sweeps of the area with animal control officers . They are writing out large quantities of citations for pet code violations.

swamplot.com had a thread about BARC not picking up animals to help with that prooblem and I forwarded it to Gerry Fusco, the BARC change agent. Sounds like he paid attention.

  6. My wife and I are buying a bungalow in the heights (built in 1925). Although it is fairly level, the inspector advised getting it releveled (some of the piers are leaning). The problem is the ground is built up around the sides of the house a good bit, so access to beneath is quite difficult. There is also currently some drainage issues (water is pooling under the house). I'd like to take care of the leveling and drainage at the same time. Any input on who to use?

Also found signs of termite damage but it was very old damage and only in a small contained area. The inspector found no other signs of termite damage, nor any signs of active termites. It seems that a prior owner must have treated the problem. What are your thoughts?

any advice on dealing with lead based paint? I'd mostly be concerned with window sills (places kids would chew). No immediate concerns (no kids for at least 4 years) but it is something i'll need to address in the future.

btw, this is our first house, and we are looking forward to getting our hands dirty. Any other heads up would be greatly appreciated!

    Curt

I have a 1920s bungalow in the Heights, could probably stand some leveling. Last summer I had sand graded under the house to deal with the ponding and it has remained effective. Total cost for materials and labor...$600. Well worth it just in the lessening of mosquitoes. The owner prior to me treated the house for termites and I have not seen a return of termites (8 years). I have loved my bungalow and have found it to be worth each second and dollar I have invested. Welcome to the neighborhood!

  7. I don't know. Will the dogs suffer more because the city sped up the process in order to save a buck, or is the city just being prudent and not throwing more bad money down a rat terrier hole? Either way something needs to be done and folks held accountable.

I worry the same thing. While $208,000 is a lot of money, it is money that should have been spent all along. I don't care the pricetag, if it can turn things around, I am for it. I am seeing and hearing good things from Fusco, regardless of the ridiculous slant of a story Lisa Falkenburg did in the Chronicle. I have the same feeling about him as about the money, if it takes a narcissistic messiah complex guy to get it done, give that man a mirror!

  8. Sims Bayou Estates is sandwiched between Santa Rosa subdiv and Park Place subdiv.

It's bounded by Poplar, Park Place Blvd, Sims Bayou, and a line behind the homes on the east side of DeLeon.

The homes west of Poplar are in Santa Rosa and Reveille bisects the Santa Rosa subdiv.

Santa Rosa runs from Telephone to DeLeon and south from Park Place Blvd to the bayou.

Just sayin...as a former Park Place resident. smile.gif

Santa Rosa, that's what he called it. Thanks for the info. I think it is an undiscovered treasure.

  9. I went to do a home visit for a dog adoption yesterday and fell in love with the neighborhood. It was off Park Place (east of) and Poplar street. I think it was called Santa Maria or something like that. Very neat streets. Had a bit of an oak Forest feel. Does anybody know anything about that area?
