  1. I have friends in Spring Valley as well. I didn't know there were any homes in the $150K range there. Their kids go to private school, so I can't tell anything about how the school district is. What schools (public) are the kids from Spring Valley zoned to? Is it true that because of the Katy Freeway expansion project that destroyed many businesses in the area, that the local resident taxpayers will be paying more taxes to make up for the loss of corporate tax revenue?

I obviously was not clear, sorry. Spring Branch ISD has some excellant elementary schools (Bunker Hill, Frostwood) where you can still find homes starting at $150,000 (just west of Bunker Hill Village).

Spring Valley doesn't have homes starting at that price range (unless you want a small tear-down). Even though Spring Valley's city taxes will rise due to the I-10 expansion, they will still be lower than the City of Houston.

Spring Valley's middle and high school is the same as for Hunter's Creek, Piney Point, Hedwig and parts of Bunker Hill.

Just east of Hillshire Village, in the City of Houston, that neighborhood is zoned to Hunter's Creek Elem.

  2. As for losing shoreline... its a barrier island.. of course its gonna move. Thats what they do. If your concerned sign up with the Galveston Bay Society and go plant some sea grass on the bayside.

The WEST end is eroding. The EAST end is ecreting. The State of Texas has historical maps showing both the erosion and the growth on the East end. Quite interesting what they predict it will look like in 50 years.

  3. I follow all of the storms. And sometimes a place gets lucky. Florida is use to getting hit by storms. It happens a lot. That is why many of the residents live in manufactured homes and build special storm shelters in their homes. Galveston is not use to getting hit so when it does happen it will be a huge mess. The vast majority of the current residents has never been in a major storm or even knows what it will be like.

My family and I went down there for the first time in years, 2 weeks ago I saw all of the new development. Where it does look very nice now I was still shocked by the many short cuts I saw underway the lack of planning I saw. I use to want to live on the Island but not now. What I saw scared me. I sometimes think that the residents forget how small that place is and how open it is to storms.

Anything within 30 miles of the coast must comply with the Texas Windstorm requirements. Some buildings are required to have impact resistant glass for up to 60 feet above existing grade.

  4. Snickers,

Houston is big, very big. Don't get confused by the posts that pertain to only one area of the town. Yes, HISD is not the best district, however, it depends upon where you live. You don't have to live in Katy, Fort Bend county to get a good education. You don't have to go to private schools. Check out Spring Branch ISD. You can find a range of houses (from $150,000 - millions) and you can get an excellent public education. You don't have to drive (or have your husband drive) 45+ minutes each way every day. Check out the City of Spring Valley, 77055, City of Houston, 77024.
