  1. I have been wondering about the mannequins too! They have graced the windows for about a month now. Whoever has moved into Casa's needs to take down the catering signage

drove by this building tonight. it is full of clothes racks so it apparently is going to be a clothing store. there were people in there setting up.

i also noticed the bronx bar is almost done. several people in the back working to get it set up.

  2. Do you know if anything will be replacing it in the Midtown location? That is an awesome building that it's in.

I was there last night (the original Fannin location) and asked one of the ladies. She said the church behind the house bought the house and is kicking them out. She said the church will be using it for offices, but also will be using as a guest house for visiting 'dignitaries'. She said the house can't be torn down because it is considered historical landmark.

  3. Noticed a couple weeks ago the land on the west side of W TC Jester just south of the Walgreens at 18th street has been cleared. I believe there used to be a commercial for sale sign on the lot. Now it is cleared with a big dirt pile and a backhoe. The address would be in the 1700s of TC Jester, I wasn't successful finding anything on HCAD. Anyone know anything?

Also the former Wild Wild Wing in the strip mall at Ella and 18th St is almost ready for reopening as Flying Dragon Chinese restaurant, per the sign out front.

  4. The new kroger gas station looks like it's nearly ready to open...

anybody know an ETA for the gas station and the reconstruction?

also, i thought i read that a 24 Fitness and other new businesses might come into the same plaza....does anyone know if we can expect any new businesses alongside the new and improved kroger?

i found an article on the web from a few years ago talking about a 24 hr fitness going into the center at TC Jester and 18th St, where the Restaurant Depot is now. I had not heard about a 24 hour fitness near the Kroger.... I can only dream.

  5. I am not too concerned reading this list.

The Hayes location on Westheimer was very close to to other 24hr fitness on westheimer. i always wondered why there were three on that stretch.

The former Campbell location I believe is near an Active that I go to a lot on Blaylock just north of I10.

You didn't list the new ones that have opened..... the one in midtown is great.

  6. the quality of most of those homes is crap and they will be falling apart in a few years. that's the biggest issue.

our realtor took us to one of these homes a year ago when we were looking in the heights area. The houses were pretty nice inside, but my problem was they were TOO big. 3500 sq ft? We have no kids and have no need for a house that big. The house very much reminded me of houses in the burbs. It did have a big media room upstairs. I have not seen one of these homes on har.com for awhile so they must all be sold. There are obviously people out there who want a home like this.

  7. I moved to Houston in 1997 when I was 22 and all of my friends went to Richmond to party. Just as you said, bars everywhere, bumper to bumper traffic late at night. Then the scene moved to Midtown/Downtown, now Washington. I had not been down Richmond for many years and drove down it a couple months ago. There were a lot of restaurants/bars that were out of business and with the building still empty. I think most of these were restaurants that came in during the end of the Richmond strip boom. What's worse on Washington? Vacant buildings from businesses that closed down, or as it was before with pawn shops, etc.

  8. I plan on swinging by there tonight to see the changes! Hopefully we can keep it from turning out the way Pearl Bar did... So upsetting seeing such a good bar go sour. Can't wait for a car bomb and a blacksmith!

Sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find it, what is the building next t E8ght bar going to be -the one with the big wood barrel for the door?

  9. Don't go to Froberg's expecting an old-time East Texas Farmer's Market. Don't get me wrong - I like Froberg's but they usually only have a few items that are local. The most local being the strawberries that they grow on-site. The majority of the rest of the produce is typical stuff from california, chile, mexico etc. that you would find at a normal grocery store.

That said, it is still worth the trip and (as coolbuddy said) the little bbq place next door is pretty good.

Yes this is correct. Less than 25% of what frobergs sells is produce they actually grow. They list on the price signs what is locally grown. The best time to go is during strawberry season, you can pick your own strawberries from a very large field for a very low price, I can't remember what the price is.

They also have some homemade pies you can buy and homemade mini fried pies.

For the most part, Frobergs is a mini-Caninos. Frobergs also sells nuts/grain in the bags, just the same as Caninos.

I lived in Clear Lake and it was a 30 minute drive from there so I'm sure what I saved in food costs was partially offset by gas costs, but I enjoyed it as an occasion weekend excursion as Frobergs is out on the 'country'.

  10. Kury @ Shirkmere

they tried to break into my neighbor across the street house at 3AM. She is on the south side of droxford. She was actually awake when they tried to break in, they shot at her back door.

The cops found 2 of the 3 guys. The 3rd guy they never found had a gun.

  11. Yes, I live on Droxford and hearing the helicopter again. There are cops stationed all over the neighborhood one our street. The story I was told by our neighbor who talked to the police.

This morning, Saturday, a helicopter and several police cars have been looking for a Hispanic male with grey shirt and black pants who has broken into four homes. Police say he has a gun and has shot twice. If you see any suspicious activity please don't hesitate to call the police. They are concentrating the search between Kury and Lindyann between Droxford and Ella.

  12. Washinton Avenue needs a bit of restuarant diversity to compliment the Heights proper ...

    Some suggestions for your entrepreneurs

    - Late Nite Curry?

    - Ethiopian?

    - A good La Fendee or Niko Niko's type of Mediterranean place (Chatters does not cut it).

    - A Mongolian hot bowl place?

Heights area is in desperate need of a good mediterranean place and a good indian place. These seem to be the two major cuisines that are lacking. Also, maybe a good, not so trendy sushi place (i.e. Soma) for the Heights area.

  13. Chatters has American food with some mediterranean. Sandwiches/salads, entrees. My in laws are older and from the burbs, so this was a 'safe' in the loop place to take them - they aren't exactly the onion creek crowd. It also was a hit with the 90 y.o. grandmas. here is the website http://www.chatterscafe.com/

we tried cavatore's the first week we were here and were not too impressed. everything was good, but the price was a bit to high for us for what we got. the place/food seemed a little dated, like something still stuck in the 90s. we prefer collinas for italian in the heights.

i've only been to the el rey on washington. great food, good people watching. mix of laborers and yuppies.

kojaks has some mediterranean, actually the last two times i ate there i got the greek plate - one of my favorite dishes - hummus, tabbouleh, baba ganoush, pita bread.

another place we like is supreme sandwiches on west TC jester just outside 610 in the same strip mall as the strip club. my hubby works from home and goes here during the week for a quick lunch - all the sandwiches are premade each day. go in, pick up your sandwich, chips, drink and it is less than $5.

  14. Hello everyone. I am a foodie that moved to the Heights area (Timbergrove) back in July. I previously lived in Clear Lake for 12 years.

I enjoyed reading this thread. I have been exploring the restaurants and am always trying new ones. I had not heard of Sweet Temptations but will try it out.

It sounds like the restaurant diversity in the Heights has improved greatly over the years but I have found a some cuisines still lacking. I love mediterranean and have yet to find any good ones closer than Rice Village - I love Istanbul. I also haven't found a good sushi place yet. I also miss the cheap Pho places, but now that Vietnam has reopened that kind of fills that void.

My favorites/regulars in the heights: Vietnam, Dry Creek/Cedar Creek, Golden Cafe (for take out Chinese), Asia Market or Vieng Thai (on long point), Pinks Pizza and Chatters when our in laws come in town.

You mentioned Wild Wild Wing, that place is just around the corner from my house I haven't been there. I recommend Kojaks Cafe in 18th street west of Ella. Great food, but closes at 8 PM weeknights and is not open weekends.
