  1. I would urge anyone who is interested in checking out that area to take the Art Crawl tour this year (November). Its a great way to go into all the artist studios that pepper the area around Last Concert Cafe. I came away from that loving that little niche of neighborhood.

I've actually been getting adventurous on my bike trips on Friday nights and ride by last concert cafe, then up to Lyons and go east or west for a bit.

there are a few condos that are built up over by last concert (1300 sterrett?), and I wouldn't be surprised if most of those warehouses haven't been converted to lofts, as the stairs/doors going into the buildings have all been greened up and look really nice, but they are probably art studios, thinking about it.

it is somewhat amazing, riding from downtown on san jac, you get the overwhelming smell of day old urine, and then you turn off onto wood, get onto walnut, and the smell is replaced with normal neighborhood smells. If you don't ride a bike, go down the streets with your windows down to get the idea.

But, once you get into this 2 block area it is very quiet for being so close to San Jacinto and I-10, probably because the streets don't really go anywhere (yet?). The train is close though.

  2. Parking sucks the closer to the center of the city you get, however, there are still lots of places you can park for free that are close to the rail, yeah, it'll cost to ride, but it is cheaper than parking in their garage.

I recently went through the ground floor, and it seems that at least for the ground floor they are filling up the space well.

  3. EaDo is kind of a stupid name, but you have to call this area something now... everyday it feels more and more "habitable". Though some small parks would be nice.

    What about 'warehouse district'?

or, since everyone likes to shorten these names to 2 syllable, 4 letter words, "WaDi" pronounced, "Wah-Dih"

  4. This Google driveby was from before it opened, but its right here in front of where the car is. Link The address is 912 St. Emanuel.

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it has very nice ambience once you're inside, and they clearly put a lot of thought into the food. The kids working behind the counter are friendly and helpful for takeout orders. On the menu there is a little smiley face next to their customers' favorite dishes.

Here's some snapshots of the menu: http://www.urbanspoon.com/u/menu/1416754?p=0

    Thanks!

I rode by there yesterday and saw it, no wonder I missed it, it really is easy to not see.

I didn't see a bike rack though, I guess I'll have to go there in my car first, and recommend a bike rack..

  5. I was driving down Pierce and when I was around the area they make their beds (Jeffersonish) I couldn't help but notice how dirty the area is. It is disgusting. It seemed worse than normal.

Someone needs to contact the people that hand out the food and let them know that it is nice and all that they feed these people, but maybe they should clean the area for everyone as well.

If I were a pedestrian, or on my bike, I would want to have a block or two cushion between myself and that.

  6. Try Hyunh's a new (5-month-old) Vietnamese restaurant in the corner of St. Emmanuel and Walker. It's a family-owned place, with good food and great prices (I think the most expensive thing on the menu is the Duck salad for $9.00! ) They also have some special stuff for breakfast on Saturdays. They have very good Vietnamese coffee (tastes chocolatish) Unimpressed by the desserts though.

There's a mall across the street On St. Emmanuel that has an Asian supermarket. Has anyone tried the Vietnamese restaurant inside that mall?

Maybe I'm just blind, but I ride by there about 3x a week on my bike, and I haven't seen it.

    what corner is it on?

  7. I hope I dont get banned for saying this but quit being an asshole samagon

    sorry to have offended you.

Personally, when I am hiring someone, the college they went to is the last thing I look at.

Whether it says UHD, HMU, UH, Harvard, I don't care. At the end of the day, I am interested in a persons ability to learn.

And to top it all off, I actually have hired people who have gone to devry, UHD and UH.

I guess I'm just not that sensitive to the name of a place that people go to for their higher education, a person is only going to get out of it what they put in to it anyway, that is true no matter what the name of the place is.

  8. If I'm thinking of the right place, one of the unique aspects of this space, to me, is the integration of the floors of whatever buildings used to sit there in the walkway.

I don't particularly care how this space is updated, but I hope that they can retain this unique feature of this greenspace!

  9. I've seen quite a few places throughout the city here that are permit parking only. It's just a way for residents to work with the city to manage parking issues. I wouldn't be surprised if they go in and put meters throughout the area cause they'll want their portion of the $ too.

And there's really not enough room for visitor parking in a townhome complex alley and then still provide enough room for people to back out. That's just being considerate to the neighbors in the complex.

If they put a parking meter in front of my house, I'd go cool hand luke on it.

  10. I agree wholeheartedly. Why diminish such a beautiful, vibrant area by referring to it as the "area" by the mall. "Area" is such a vague term. Uptown does have distinct boundaries as mentioned earlier in the thread. Should we start calling downtown the "Houston Pavilions Area?"

The second-most well known part of the city should have a meaningful name. Whether or not you like the term "Uptown" (which I do), you've got to admit that "Galleria Area" is an injustice to the area.

So does the Galleria Area, and if you overlay the two, they are damn near identical.

If Houston Pavilions came prior to Downtown, and the name of the area was considered by one and all to be Houston Pavilions Area, then yeah, Houston Pavilions Area it is.

Eventually, the warehouse district won't have anymore warehouses in it, but will that mean it will be thought of as EaDo by people who have been in Houston forever? I'll laugh secretly whenever anyone uses that name, and I suppose people will look at me like a crazy person when I say warehouse district. You can find hundreds of examples to use.

At the end of the day though, money will win out, it will be called Uptown, and EaDo, and whatever other nifty names some marketing person comes up with that has nothing to do with what has to do with anything. And I guess that the other prepositional options that come with up and down (left and right) they don't have the same ring. Lefttown, or Righttown, neither of them really work.

    But then niether does Uptown.

Gone are the days when a contest is held to name something like the Gulf Freeway, but then, I guess if they held a contest to name the Galleria area, people probably would have submitted "Galleria Area".

  11. I'd settle for regular SWEEPING in the Northern Third Ward part of the trail. Everytime I ride there I have to navigate a continuous strain of broken beer bottles. Yet the second you cross I-45 back into EaDo, it's clean as a whistle. It really is a beautiful trail tho, and it's so great to have actual hike/bikeways that go somewhere.

    That really is a shame.

On a side note, there ought to be a law against littering...

  12. I love the "Columbia tap rail to trail". It's a traffic-free ride to Hermann Park. I wish they'd mow the sides more often though

    http://www.eastdowntownhouston.com/railstotrails.pdf

I utilize the part north of Leeland for getting into town.

I wish there were better maps of this trail, and of the rail line that will go down scott. It looks like the rail will go alongside this trail for a short period, and I would really like to see how it will be affected, but I guess I will just have to use it, watch the unfolding of the build and then wait for the exciting conclusion!

  13. The trail along Brays Bayou between Lawndale & Mason Park is very nice; I like it more than the Buffalo Bayou trail between downtown & Shepherd.

Heh, if you said it was worse that that particular stretch of trail, I would be impressed, but since it is hard to have a trail worse than the stretch along buffalo bayou between sabine street and shepherd, I can only assume is doesn't completely look like it has been abandoned of any maintenance for the past 20 years.

I used to use the trail in terry hershey as a standard for safety and decided that once some of the trails in the east end were at that level that I would start riding them. But after what happened last week, I guess I'm as safe anywhere.

So, I just ride on the streets!

  14. ;)

Get out! We all know this place is doomed to failure and nobody will every frequent any of its establishments. You're starting to sound like some of the lunatic posters who keep insisting that people are actually using and enjoying Discovery Green. ;)

(and, btw, I happened by Discovery Green yesterday afternoon just before 2:00 and it was swarming with people, seemingly enjoying themselves.)

Those people were just cardboard cutouts, using clever ILM techniques they are made to look as though they are real and enjoying themselves.

I hope that the HP doesn't turn into T&C v2.0 seeing as that was opened in the midst of a great recession as well, but since there isn't another mall within 10 miles, (or worse less than a mile away with better access) it may work out better.

  15. There was a woman shot/killed and had her new caddy stolen not too long ago, it was daytime. And shock and horror, it was in Pearland as she was leaving work.

Guess we can't live there either.

Not to be too morbid about the situation, but as it goes, I'd rather live where a thief is bad enough where he tries to kill someone for their car, but fails on both accounts, not to mention where he isn't confident enough to try in the middle of the day, even if he injured the owner and then banged up the car. That is a much better outcome than death.

Anyway, as others have said, it can and does happen anywhere.
