  1. The Houston Motor Inn was on 45 north going towards Dallas. I believe that is between Crosstimbers and Greens road. If you are going towards Dallas, it would have been on your left hand side of the freeway. I hope this helps you. I remember seeing it as a kid and thought of the 60s space age look. There was a motel demolished across from a fiesta on 45 north. How old were you when you last saw it? Or what year was it?

Does anybody remember the Houston Motor Inn? I am trying to find a picture, blueprints, a name, any and all information relating to this place. I only saw it once, very briefly. It was red and looked like something out of the Jetsons.

In 1999 I moved to Austin and my employer sent me to Houston for a week of training. On the way to a job site on an unknown freeway (I was not driving) we passed it and I really fell for the look and feel of the place. Passing it again on the way home I regretted that I did not have a camera nor the opportunity to stop and get one.

At that time it was very run down and obviously not in operation.

I'm most interested in photos and or drawings of the sign and office.

I used to think it was located on I-10 east of downtown, like you were going to Beaumont, but a couple of years later a google search came up with a listing with an address on North Freeway. Unfortunately, my calls to inquire if it was the same place, newly renovated and open for business, were treated like a prank call and I was hung up on every time I called. ??? A recent google search failed to even yield the North Freeway location.

Ironicly, there is a Houston Motor Inn in Houston, British Columbia.

Does the city of Houston or Harris County tax office have old records where I can find who owned this place? Maybe even a blueprint of the building in a zoning dept.?

Does anyone have any memories of this place they care to share?

Any information would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

  2. I have done some research about the theatres in Houston and the one on Rusk between Travis and Main was the Ritz Theatre. The original Majestic was off Texas, but I have seen reports of there being two "Majestics." There was only one Majestic built by John Eberson and it was the first "atmopheric" theatre that he built, but unfortnately it was demolished in the early seventies. He has two others that are still standing in San Antonio and Dallas. They seem to perserve their history better than us. If you know where the other majestic was, do tell.

Is that in the original Majestic or the one on Rusk?

  3. My wife's favorite is Osaka (515 Westheimer).  It's good stuff, but I don't eat enough sushi to compare it to others.

Well, Osaka (been there four times) has been on Marvin Zindler's list, too. Kirin (been there three times) is not quality sushi..the fish was not fresh and the rice was real dry. Cafe Japon (have been there a few times) has its nights as well...I would not necessarily call it "consistently" good sushi, but it is okay. Yan Sushi (have been there five times and the sushi chef kept asking for my opinion) was on Marvin Zindler's list as well...it was all right. Miyako (used to go alot until they started being skimpers on the nigri and makis) is okay, but the staff can be sort of a pain and they are expensive and you don't get that much as far as nigri. Benihana (been there about two times) does not specialize in sushi and is okay to bad sometimes. Wasabi is overpriced and okay (not the best). Sake lounge (been there twice) is blah. Kubo's (been there twice) got my manager sick and was alright. ToDai (been there three times) is real bad.. my friend got a crab there that was dead before it hit the water, he did not eat it, but it was real gross. And everybody there rushes to eat all the sake (smoked salmon). Buffets are just real bad and are never consistent. I have had some okay sushi at buffets.

Places that are consistently good and great: Azuma (been there a lot) is great..it is a little bit pricey, but the fish is real fresh and flavourful (totally worth it). Their rice is warm and has a sweet taste to it. Great place for a nice meal and great atomsphere. Ginza (been there about six times) is good as well, but they are a bit pricey... as well.. there they dress in kimonos and great atomsphere. Tokyohana (I go pretty frequently) is great for inexpensive and more bang for you buck. They have been consistently good and they have a revese happy hour that starts at 9 p.m. Blue fish (been there a lot) has a great peppered tuna...yum...and the place next to cactus on shepherd (they recently changed their name) was pretty good as well. Yoshida (been there six times) is real good and authentic..my japanese friend loves that place is over by Memorial city Mall.

I have heard the sushi king is good, but I have not investigated that place yet.

Again this is only my opinion and would say that I am an addict as well..I love to make sushi as well. Hope this is helpful for you in deciding where you may choose to eat. I try to got back to places and give them second chances, but if they are bad then they are just bad.

  4. :( A sign went up in the front yard this weekend for a builder.  I called to see if there was any price they would consider selling it, but they already have a buyer that is custom building on the lot.

:( Is there anything we can do to stop this. It is disappointing when history is destroyed like this. I feel so helpless and I am really, really upset that this builder is choosing to destory this piece of history rather than perserve it.

  5. I also went there as a kid. My husband thinks it's just a figmant of my imagination. I am so glad that others remember it. I would love to see photos of it.

If it is the correct place, I used to have dreams about going there and thought it was a figment of my imagination. I went in the early eighties... Please help clarify, if this true. I would be really interested in seeing pictures of this place because I thought it was just a dream.

  6. Sea-Arama was the aquarium in Galveston right?

My figment of my imagination memory was a theme park I thought in sugarland.

Hana-Barbera Land.  I dont know if it actually exsisted or not, but oh well.

I remember Hanna Barbara Land it is currently Splashtown. They still have some of the stuff that used to be there like the fake trees. I know because I grew up over there off 45 North. I hope this helps you. If there are pictures, please post them.
