  1. Looking forward to the Park IV and V Tour this Sunday! So excited that Houston Mod has organized so many amazing events celebrating all things Mod!!! http://houstonmod.org

Next week Lawndale rolls out the lastest version of their now 15 year old Mid-Century Modern Market - Design Fair 2010: Learn. Shop. Connect.

This year they are joining the 21st Century and adding cutting-edge contemporary design dealers along side some of the best Mid-Century dealers in the city. Don't miss it. Starts with a lecture by Houston design rock star Lauren Rottet, Wednesday, the 21st, 7 pm at the Decorative Center. Then big sneak peek Preview Party on Friday, the 23rd, 6 pm. Tickets on sale now.

Come on out and see some great stuff!

More about it all here - http://www.lawndaleartcenter.org

  2. Yes, it's a panaderia. It's good, too. However, their selection has seemed a bit limited lately.

I believe it's called Sarita Panaderia. The staff and cooks are really nice there. The pan dulce is limited, but check the baker's racks before the cabinets. So good when fresh. The tacos are yummy and they have really great homemade salse. Nice homemade tortillas, too.

We live very close near 14th and Nicholson, so were were glad to have a taqueria within walking/biking distance. We gave the Jaliscience two tries and would never go back - really bad, and had a strange vibe.. I am glad they are gone. I don't think they were ever related to the old Jaliscience on Montrose (we asked on those two times and they looked at us like we were crazy..and yes, we speak Spanish)...but to another location... on Airline? The property owners renovated the exterior of the property last year and we can't figure out what the other spaces in there are. No sign, white curtains, lots of garment racks and bins of stuff stored in there. Wish something fun would move into that strip.

Anyway, we recommend the Sarita for tacos and pan dulce. Better than Chulosos any day!

  3. The magazine Real Simple features healthy snacks in the cover story this month.  It includes a great list, like the one you all are building here, of options.  A new one that I learned from the article... a few strawberries dipped in ricotta cheese. Yummy for those with a sweet tooth. Protein, fiber and vitamins.

  4. Thanks for the great pics of the San Leon house!Penguin Arms - 2902 Revere St. @ the corner of Kipling and Revere.  Google maps has a good pic. Sorry, full URL not loading...cut and paste the address into googlemaps and you'll get to it.

  5. One more thing...more things than you'd ever want to know about parakeets.

The topic of parakeets in Houston was presented during the University of Houston Blaffer Gallery and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts conference, Systems of Sustainability: Art Innovation Action, last March. An artist, BD Collier, created a project and website documenting and comparing the now extinct native American Carolina Parakeet and the introduced surviving Monk Parakeet. http://newparrots.societyrne.net/index.htm

Also, there is an active nest of monk parakeets on Elgin near Scott behind the McDonald's near the UH central campus.

  6. I know this does not have anything to do with architecture....but you all are the most informed group about what is happening around the Heights. Has anyone else noticed parakeets in the Houston Heights? We live near 14th and Nicholson and have spotted 3 in our back yard and while walking the dog.

  7. Just goes to show how rampant and rapid inner loop development is happening....so fast that the developers obviously are not taking the time to research whether someone could actually live there. I take secret pleasure in making as much racket as possible when recycling the glass, especially when someone is showing those properties to potential buyers. Caveat emptor!

My hope is that this will be a lesson for the future development of this area.

Please make it smart, green, livable and useful.
