  1. swtsig has a long history of credibility. htownlive has made a lot of assertions in his brief time here that have yet to fruit. though I'd love his assertions to be true, posts like the following raise doubts of credibility

That's great and all, but haven't seen anything recently from swtsig showing s/he knows anything more than us regular haif folk. My money's on HTOWN LIVE, until proven otherwise.

  2. Wow, actually a pretty ballsy move by the architect. It's very dentist-off-Gessner-1983 chic. Either s/he was like, "I've got an idea no one is doing right now! Let's go all retro SW Houston early 1980's. And, let's put it in Montrose and make it a....let's see...condo." Or, s/he was like, "Golly, I haven't worked or had a new idea in 30 years, but maybe no one will notice??"

Either way, kudos to the developer and architect for coming up with a design that blows all current styles and conventions out the door! Look out Herzog and de Meuron and Zaha Hadid. The new revolution in design started right here, my friends! Print that s#*t!!

  3. From Bob Eury:

    Tomika,

Thank you for your interest and letting us know of your concerns about the new residential building to the west of Market Square. The project is being developed by BMS, owner of the entire block 35 for many years. Their plans include Market Square Garage which will primarily serve the residents of the new building. In review of the plans the District took into consideration the active ground floor uses on the entire block which includes reuse of the existing retail space along Congress and Milam, new retail space along Preston and the entrance and lobby area. Total retail space in the project is over 22,000 square feet or 35% of the block, and 59% of the block will have active ground floor uses including the retail space. We support the owners' desires to have the front door on Milam Street at the park and have encouraged them on the design of the entry area to make it as open as possible. Adding 600 to 700 new residents from the building to the Market Square neighborhood will be a real boost to pedestrian activity and patronage at existing and new food and beverage establishments and other retail.

    Best regards,
    Bob Eury

  4. The dome will be toast, and rightly so given the poor option the county is attempting to cram down our throats with its craven tactics. We'll have to schedule our next HAIF Happy Hour for the friday after the election. I'll gladly stand a drink to any HAIFer who wants to wager the dome lives.

You're on! I'll bet you real money - $100. Can't wait to drink a few rounds on you!

So, crunchtastic, what say you?!! Are we on? I'll up my bet to $200.

The most ridic idea yet is that we should pay for this because of possible future casino gambling. What, so we can maybe in the future give Tillman Fertitta another incentive? The vote is not merely to rehab the dome. It is for a  potentially endless succession of taxpayer-funded handouts to future tenants....after the initial costs. This is what you will be voting for, not 'just' $8.  Hell, if the point is mass- commerical enterprise, we could turn it into a flea market today for a lot less than $200M. Traders Village is so inconvenient to get to, after all.

Or how about the awesome  comparison to 'repurposing'  the Compaq Center. How well, exactly, did we  make out on that sweetheart deal to Lakewood after all the sunk costs?

You're on! I'll bet you real money - $100. Can't wait to drink a few rounds on you!

  6. Wow, Houston needs this big time! I'm in Austin this weekend and hit Deep Eddy, a man made pool utilizing filtered river water. It's great. And, Barton Springs is amazing!

If Houston had such a place, it should be on White Oak bayou. Take out that crappy small pool and add a huge one, with views of downtown.

Please, Houston, build a freakin' pool for when it's 120 degree like this!

  7. So much bad taste going on in the world. That last one looked like a poster for the 1974 classic disaster movie epic "Earthquake". Vile.

You'll love it in about 10 years. Too forward for all ya folks on here.

  8. By the way, how has Bush affected your 'community'? I don't dispute that there's a lot of outrage...but I just don't get it. So enlighten me, oh African American female one! Explain to me the hardships inflicted upon your 'community' by the evil one. And explain to me the special or unique nature of being an African American female, while you're at it. Explain why you're special.

Yours is precisely the tone that my "community" feels from many including the president on a daily basis. I would just ask you please think before writing such blatantly racist remarks.

  9. I personally think Culberson will back off of trying to derail METROrail now. Now this is just an educated guess, I think he was only really doing it in the first place to maintain his seat in Congress. He knew he would get support from the AOers. Now that he has his seat, it would be waisted effort to continue to thwart the plans.

I do think Culberson was just pandering to his constituency. Especially because he so eagerly supported eminent domain along the Katy Freeway in years past. To his credit, Culberson responded in lengthy and thorough form to the two letters I wrote him concerning the University Line. And my guess is that Metro has been throwing him a bone lately in order to appease him while they gain strength offered by transit ridership data hopefully substantiated by the current alignment studies. There's just no way federal transit $$

  10. Legally, yes. Effectively, no. Game theory works too well.

It seems there is some movement from the Kinkys and Naders in the world to possibly establish a viable 3rd party. It's too bad that right now all issues are either one or the other, black or white, when clearly the voting public seems to be in the middle. I myself am hoping for a moderate revolution. And, no douche bags allowed! ;)

As a left leaning individual, I find your postings as distasteful as the "hypocritical faux-Christian douche bags" you so inelegantly refer to. You clearly have nothing constructive to add to any discussion. You are just as sore of a winner as some Republicans were in 2000.

So sensitive y'all! Ok, I'll tone it down. As an African American middle-aged female, we just have so little going for us in this country right now. My anger for what Bush has done (or not done) and how it's affected my community runs deep. This election restores some semblance of hope that we might not be just a country of idiots. I feel so happy that the country FINALLY seems to be waking up. As of yesterday I am once again proud of being American.

  11. Those with unwaivering support for a single political affiliation either have no brain or have no conscience. I'll let you decide into which category you fall.

Sorry, it's just too fun to play with the sore Republicans (or Republican wanna-be's) right now! The two party system isn't great but it seems to be how this country operates right now. It's too bad. Hopefully, some day we'll be able to elect independents...as long as they're not hypocritical faux-Christian douche bags like the Republicans in office now. The Dems is the best we got right now and they're light years ahead of the current cesspool of GOP scum, so I'll give 'em my support.
