  1. :wacko:

    no matter how frustrated you guys are with the texans offense as a whole or Carrs progression on a crappy team in a new system with an injury riddled O-line, you are foolish to think he is a backup i think there are plenty of teams in the nfl where he would be an upgrade over there starting QB.

    name one team that would rather have Carr starting than their starting QB - injured situations don't count for ex. Jeff Garcia since McNabb is hurt.

    Texans could make a play for Matt Schaub, current backup behind Vick in Atlanta. Young QB, with a couple of years experience, though on the bench. Was a 3rd round pick I believe.

  2. I don't think the trend had passed. I was hoping they would eventually open up a second location closer to downtown even. For lunch, for some reason no one I know of had sandwiches as good as theirs. Even though it seems like it shouldn't be complicated, they actually used good meats, had good bread, and I never have found anywhere else that seems to do it as well. While upscale, it was the closest thing to a take out place I know of.

    hopefully someone sees there is a market for it and opens a similar concept around houston. It was always pretty busy when I went there.

  3. I'm just saying that it could be an investment for the city if we bought the land in that area (the warehouses and abandoned buildings) hired a development team to come up with plans on a project (similar to Hardy Rail, which would also be a good MLS location), and leased it to a number of developers, including MLS. It wouldn't be just a gimme. We'd be getting the money back via lease, and the land value would rise with the developments coming into play. As other developers saw that the land is becoming another Midtown, perhaps they'd want to buy the land lots instead of leasing. By that time, the appreciation of the land would have risen, and our city would have profitted. And ban the homeless from living anywhere on Houston's streets (like we have Downtown and Midtown) so the population doesn't spill into 3rd Ward. We have the homeless shelters in the area to help.

    The only reason why that land is worth anything is because it's across from Downtown. That's it. There's nothing there. It's a sitting duck. Anything done on that land could only make that property value rise, yo. Do something you didn't do with Toyota or Minute Maid; have this stadium be a part of a masterplan instead of wishful thinking.

    Uh, drive around that land sometime - there's townhomes and lofts already sprouting up everywhere. I would probably guess that in the last year and a half at least 200-300 have been built in the area. Yes, a lot of empty lots still, but the difference between that and say, what the 4th Ward used to be, is that developers, if they so cared to can already just pop in and buy the land without having to kick anyone out. A stadium, if designed poorly, would probably just deaden that progress as you have a lot of people asking, "why would anyone want to live next to that"?

  4. So Clarks/Deans is no more or did they reloctate?

    It looked like a nice recording studio/club/clothing store which was a very unique & cool concept

    Dean's and Clark's are two different places. Dean's is still around - I like that place.

  5. I didn't think many inner loop residents ate at chili's??? there are too many good restaurants inside the loop.

    My previous post was entirely sarcastic - i don't care where Chili's builds, I'm not going there. Same goes for Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and the rest of the Darden's gang

  6. Wow, Chili's thats awesome. I mean I know I look at all the restaurants inside the loop, with variety and are locally operated and a unique experience, and just wish a Chili's would come in. Nothing like pretending I was in the woodlands when there is something much, much better just down the street.....

    I'll be curious to hear which best buy rumor is true - half the people think its going by Gulfgate and half think its going in the Sawyer Heights area.

    How is the mattress/ cheap shoe market not saturated yet? Do people buy new matresses every 3 months?

  7. I knew it had to happen eventually - I loved going to this place because it was one of the prettiest bars in my opinion. the huge ceiling, brick walls, I really liked it. But there was never anyone in there. Sometimes that was nice when I wanted to just have a drink at the bar in peace, but sometimes you at least want someone else in there. I never understand some of these places that people obviously spend a lot of money to make but can't seem to either find a promoter to fill the place more or to be able to attract enough regulars to stay open. I can't say I went regularly, but I did go enough to where I wish it was able to have somehow stayed open.

  8. 17,440 according to the Chron.

    game's at 6pm sunday, and on HDNet. anyone know if they serve beer at Robertson?

    Its a tidy $6 if I remember correctly during Dynamo games. One of the few things about the whole experience that is expensive.

  9. XO Lounge doesn't look so much like it's in Midtown...

    11403 Bellaire Blvd. Houston, TX 77072 is the address.

    The guy who owns Esco does own Whiskey Creek, and has a share in many places around the area (even Kobain's off Washington)...

    Roof Bar is cool - they do play a lot of old rock & alt. If you went to HS in the 90s, you'll definitely do some reminiscing and it's not the same old stuff you hear on the radio either. I thought it was a great crowd - even my friends that don't like *Midtown* bars all that much liked it there. The view is nice, if you can overlook all the crap that immediately surrounds it. The outside decor has nothing on Red Door.

    Epic is typical Midtown... fancy people, fancy drinks, but I've never had any problems with the door guy. They do keep it WAAAAY too cold inside. Nice porch area though.

    Pub Fiction is def a college crowd now. It is, after all, from the ex-owners of BAR Houston...

    Red Door went downhill when Darren & his bartenders all left... It's a beautiful bar (my fave), but when the masses discovered it, it became the place for the surburbanites to hit for a "night out on the town"... I saw some soccer moms there the last time I went.

    This is the XO I was talking about - looks like similar names, because XO is such a creative name:

    XO

  10. Yeah im about as proud of this ban as i am of a survivorless plane crash! The ban is STUPID!

    Houstonian I think I remember you saying you are not a smoker correct? I'm just asking, how often do you frequent bars? Will this stop you from going into bars? Does this affect your life in any way, shape or form? I know you have a right to an opinion, but you are almost acting as if they are enacting a mandatory herpes injection upon entry to a bar. However, I would ask if you think the majority of americans (or houstonians) are smokers or non smokers. My guess would be something like 70% non/ 30% smokers. So doesn't the majority get some kind of say here + don't you think people at one point said the idea of banning smoking on planes or in an office was stupid as well? It doesn't set any precedent that didn't already exist anyway, its just furthering that precedent. The battle has already been lost on smokers rights, just look at the taxes and cost for a pack versus 5-6 years ago. I personally am thrilled about the ban.

  11. Good drinks must be a matter of opinion. The drinks at the Front porch are weak.

    What bothers me about front Porch is the prices sometimes. I understand getting a $4-$5 beer price on a Fri/ Sat, but I hate going on a Tuesday night and having no specials. And specials only on Bud Light once a week doesn't really count. Its like having a sale on bottled water.

  12. I think Reliant should had been built somewhere else in Houston. Maybe those vast plains south of the former site of Astroworld. After watching the Arizona Cardinals stadium last Monday night, I wish we had something as big ans as grand. It could have spurred development there, and the rail could have been extended down that way.

    Why would we want the stadium to be further out of the city? It doesn't make sense, it is nice that currently all three sports stadiums are inside the loop and all relatively accesible by the current rail. Not to mention, why would a stadium further out spur development while the current one sits on a spot that has existed since 1965 and not spurred development. The Arizona one, while I'm not familiar with, is allegedly out in the middle of nowhere. I think the "development" it has spurred is eateries and bars for people to go to when they are at the game. Otherwise, I don't know what else has developed there.

  13. I'm not a fan of the Roof at all. It got the LA type layout right, its just the crowd that sucks. A lot of people looking for fights. Plus its billed as a Rock and Roll bar, but I also heard some Jon Secada there once. Uh, something doesn't add up. The view on the Roof is awesome though, the main reason to go to say the least. Epic is basically in the corner of one of the Vietnamese shopping centers close to there. Nice interior, even though it looks like Ikea. Not a bad place, but that was just one time I went there. Also XO Lounge also opened up, I did like it there even if there weren't many people there yet. Very friendly staff and a cheap happy hour.

  14. Now, for us to make it, we have to sweep the Braves, and HOPE the Brewers can win at least two...

    And win today - luckily we have Roy O today, we need him to go late in the game after a night like last night. He's a gamer, I think we should be ok today.

    At worst, we need the Brewers to win 1 and we sweep. This would force the Cards to play the make up game against San Fran on Monday. If they lose that, we tie for the season, a win and they are in. At the very least, I want them to have to earn this thing, so here's hoping we sweep the Braves.

  15. Reggie White did not prudce much more then what Mario did. Actually Reggie White did less. So let's wait and see.

    Yeah I'm not quite sure what this post means - the Minister of defense, Super Bowl winning, hall of famer Reggie White did not produce much? Do you mean he didn't produce much when he retired? Wow. Its like saying Barry Sanders didn't do much more than Wali Lundy did.

    DJ your quote earlier was "It's expected that Williams would not have a good first year" - here's a few other quotes

  16. Hey Semipro, hush. Your plethora of cliche's were fun for a while but are now becoming tiresome. You ARE not an expert on the game of football, and prove it everytime you post, and to make a statement like you have about Williams is ludicrous at this point. The guy is a rookie playing on a subpar line, and to write him off as a bust three games into the season is extremely premature.

    Stop watching Howie and Terry so much. <_<

    Trust me, I try not to get caught into Semipro's nonsense. Especially considering he thought that the Redskins game would come down to a field goal. Then he comes out and says he's always right.

    That all being said, the number one selling line behind taking Mario #1 was to take someone that would have an "immediate" impact on the defense. That was why he was brought here - not to be a project, not to have some rough seasons before blossoming, it was an immediate impact move (allegedly). If he was not going to be able to succeed this season, regardless of the rest of the line or whatever, they should not have taken him. His impact this season = 0. He's already making excuses about being double and triple teamed all game, which is not true. If you look at his college starts, this should already have been known, his best games always came against far inferior competition. Maybe it is early to use the word "bust", but he does get a F for season to date because he wasn't supposed to have growing pains.

    Tonight, the Texans will hear about Bush about 1,000 times. regardless if he has a good game or not, he is playing in prime time tonight and the announcers will be sure to bring up passing on him again and again.

  17. None of their locations stay open late. It is not a late night diner for drunks either. I know the east location has never been open for dinner except maybe one day a week. I've been to the midtown district 7 during lunch and it gets plenty of business. I don't think that people are having a problem finding it.

    If you look at the menu, you can tell its not exactly a stumble in at 2 in the morning, order greasy eggs kind of place.

  18. 1. I can't wait for the street level retail! I love hanging out in Downtown, but I have always wanted it to be as high paced as a northern city's CBD.

    2. Yet another school zoning post (this applies to the entire Pavilion condo complex, provided zoning doesn't change)

    Houston ISD:

    * Gregory-Lincoln Education Center (K-8 campus, but the Houston Pavillions is zoned for K-5 only!) - http://ms.houstonisd.org/GregoryLincoln/

    * E.O. Smith Education Center (1-8 campus, but Houston Pavillions is zoned for 6-8 only!) - http://ms.houstonisd.org/smithms/

    * Davis High School - http://hs.houstonisd.org/DavisHS/

    Profiles:

    * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Gregor...onCenter_ES.pdf

    * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Smith_EO_1thru8.pdf

    * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Davis_HS.pdf

    No offense, but can we give it a rest with the school zoning in every single post? I don't think this is anyone's number one concern with this project...

  19. What about the newish "take away" place on Franklin and Main?

    Can't remember the exact name but it's "healthy take-away".

    It's next to the coffee place.

    Cotton Exchange has already re-opened. This was around a few years ago, but closed, and now has since remodeled some and back in operation. It will also house Seattles Best Coffee in a few weeks (possibly already) and then be open during the day as well.

    the place on Franklin and main I remember being mentioned in the Chronicle once, but don't remember that the name was either. I'm gald you mentioned the cross streets because I remember reading about it, but then not remembering where it was located. I'll have to check it out.

  20. That is fine and dandy that Houston is on an upscale retail upswing, but so long as the typical unsophisticated socially retarded yokel is working in them, these stores will do nothing to boost the image of the city. Its the interaction wit da peeps that enhance or not enhance the overall image.

    And once again MiDTOWNeR creeps out to provide such great commentary on why the state of new jersey is really an underrated source of well spoken people and a jewel in the mind of people everywhere. That and also taking away the crown of most negative person from houstonsemipro.
