  1. Your right gonzo, but wasn't that clearing the site of the Bear Creek Methodist church before it was moved over to hwy 6 and Park Row? I think that a marker is there stating that, but having not seen it with my own two eys's can't say for sure.

The Blue Light (Hillendahl-Eggling Cemetery) is that fenced area. It's been twenty years since the last time I went out there, and that was high school. I seem to remember though that, that clearing was there back then. I could have north and south confused though.

Searching around the net looking for information on this, has led me to several very off the wall sites. All of which have been filled with ghost stories about the cemetry, the cross and Patterson Rd. However no mention anywhere about the mounds.

The Patterson Rd. stories are the best. Did you know that if you drive down Patterson Rd. day or night, stop the car and turn it off, you'll soon start to hear tapping all over your car which will be followed by voices. Anyway........

It's been extremely difficult to find a good detailed history of Addicks, I get bit's but nothing close to complete. A map of the town would be fantastic!

About the only thing close to an explanation I've seen came word of mouth from a farmer in the area, sometime back in the 80's. He claimed this was the work of "a bunch of pot smoking hippies". This was found posted at another fourm, onr of the ghost/haunted places ones, but I can't remember which.

I could almost buy that, but...... It's a cross. Not a peace sign!

Why would a bunch of hippies take time out of thier already hectic schedual of free love making and frequent LSD trips, to construct this cross and nearby mounds. Why also would they pick this snake infested swamp to camp in? This is not an area condusive to camping. So several things about the hippy theory don't wash either.

One other note, in what I've read there was another cemetary which was moved from this area at the time of the dam being built. Anyone know a location on this?

  2. I think the U-tote-Em I remember most was the one on Montrose and Hyde Park. That brings back memories of comic books and candy cigarettes for me. My grandmother would take me here every day, as she lived just two blocks down Hyde Park at Converse.

This building is still there and is now Hollywood food store as it has been for years.

Wasn't that a U-tote-Em in the old Clash video for "Rock the Casbah". There were two sheik's pumping gas into their Caddilac, giving the thumbs up sign. That's way back when MTV played music video's!

  3. I hate to dig this thread back up, but more than 150 reply's and there doesn't seem to be an answer on this. What is it?

I saw the rodeo arena theory, but that doesn't explain the cross. Then the Indian mound theory.....still doesn't explain the cross.

Is it, or was it at some time long ago part of the "Blue light"?

I've done all the research I can on these, and can't come up with anything. However, I have noticed something that I don't think anyone else did. If you look on MSN maps, zoom down to 150 yards and look just west of what has been in a past reply reffered to as "USA" there is another mound, this one with pefectly straight line's or trails (possibly even waterways) comming from it.??

This is obviously man made, just like the other two features.

I'm just amazed that nobody seems to know what it is, except Fred of course.

  4. I believe that where the ice rink is, was part of the most recent expansion project, so it would have been parking lot. Now, where the food court is, is what used to be York's steak house years ago, and was then vacant for several years. The wall's were knocked out to make this an open area.

Back in the 70's this was a nice mall. It had nice fountain areas at each intersection in the mall with seating areas. It was also very clean, somewhat sterile even. The stores I remember were a hobby place called "LeeWard's??" not sure if thats the right name or not, a pet store, and an arcade located on the back side of the mall by where the Army recruiting office was.

This wasn't a mall with alot of flash to it, aside from the fountains. The decor was mostly white with red carpeting in these rather odd sunken floor sections that now would certainly be a lawsuit waiting to happen. Thats probbably why they're gone now!

  5. For what it's worth, I'll second the Fun Shop name. I know it wasn't a Spencers gifts for sure. I bought a tail pipe whistle from there that got me in a lot of trouble.

Now I do remember the bowling alley and pool hall. Which was on 4th level of 2 near the glass elevators, back when you could go all the way up without a card key. I even remember going in these places before they were completed, still under construction and thinking they were crazy at the time. I mean who's going to the mall to go bowling, especialy the Galleria?! Well......... We did, just once!

Seemed like the next time we thought about going back, it was already closed down. Not sure how long it lasted there, but doubt it was much more than a year. As for a year, it's a complete guess but I'll say 1979.

Oddly as much time as I spent in here, it's hard to recall individual store names. The one place I'll never forget as long as I live was Ferells ice cream (mentioned in numerous other threads), which was incidently the scariest place you could take a little kid for their birthday. They made you stand on the table, while every siren, horn and drum was played as loud as possible. What memories those are!

I think the kiosk that sells watches has probably been there since the day the mall opened. I've seen nearly every store in there change at least once in 35+ years, but that place has never changed. "It's about time" I believe is the name.

    Question,

Are there still appartment/condos at the Galleria, or was this all converted to office space?

  6. Wow you guys bring back memories,

Can't say I know much about Playland, but I sure spent some time at the various Malibu fun centers around town. Which there were at least three that I went to regularly. First as a young kid, then a teen and later took my kids to as well.

The first where the triple homicides took place was at 59 and Westpark, right at the curve. The place was doomed even before this happened, mainly due to the neighborhood it was in, or near I should say. "The Gulfton ghetto"

The second was probably better known as Malibu "Castle" fun center, on 610 about two blocks up from Old Katy Rd. This place only recently closed down, what a shame! I have so many memories from here, with all the little houses and castles around the golf courses all lit up at night. Took several dates here durring high school. Ahhh....Good Times, Great Oldies! LOL

The third was on the North side of town. This was Malibu/Watercoaster. The water slides were built into the side of a big hill, and were constructed from concrete. This particular one closed down well before the other two. Dont know the year though. There was also another Watercoster place on Galveston Island near Stewart beach.

All three had the same Malibu race cars, but Castle fun center was the only one with mini golf, bumper boats and batting cages. It was far and away the best Mini golf in Houston. Mountasia just doesn't have the same feel this place did.

Games People Play, thats another one. On 1960 in the Champions area. What a waterslide that was, Huge wooden water tower with the three slides comming out of it. (Anyone remember Sawmill run?)

Now the Putt Putt/Games People Play on Fondren and Beechnut was where I went most often. This started life as just a Putt Putt golf center, then later became GPP and added an arcade and go carts. Some of the best times I had as boy with my dad were here, when it was just Putt Putt. If I close my eye's I can still hear KC and the Sunshine band playing over the PA system at Putt Putt, and get a little chill when I do.

Those times down at Sea Arama were great too. BTW in response to a post made long ago. The name of the park next to here was Jungle Surf, another favorite.

Who here remembers the clock/puppet show thing that they used to have at Sharpstown Mall, back when Sharpstown was just a one story shopping center. This thing went off every hour or half hour, and we used to sit in the drug store snack bar waiting till time for it to go off. Those were the days!

    Question for anyone,

We went many times to the mini golf place on Belfort. Was it "Gooney" or "Goofy" golf? I seem to remember it being Goofy golf for some reason.
