  1. I can remember two restaurants that featured the telephone-ordering approach. One was Kings restaurant, next door to Goonie Golf (opposite side from library), and Across the Street, on Hillcroft just south of Westheimer. For some reason I remember eating onion rings at Kings, and curly fries at Across the Street.
  2. I've seen Braes much more than Brays (including being used as parts of nearby subdivisions and street names), so I'd bet that today's spelling (though it may have originated as Brays.
  3. More information and pictures at this site as well: http://houstorian.wordpress.com/2008/04/07...dens-1971-1973/
  4. So great to see this post! Lots of great information about places of the past. I have fond memories of Westbury Square, mostly as a child and teenager (late 60's-early 80's). Our family used to go there a lot. I remember the clock tower, Rumpleheimer's, Cargo Houston, a book store, The Candle Shop (my brother worked there in the 70's), the fountain, Cromwells? (clothing store), and other places. Later on (late 80's), the only place that seem to be open and significant was a great little Chinese restaurant. I visited "the Square" around 2000 and and took some pictures of what was left. I'll try to post them.
  5. Great to see all these postings! Makes me nostalgic. I attended Westbury from 1979-1982. I remember the places mentioned above (BBQ restaurant and Lewis and Coker grocery store). Westbury Square nearby. Also a TGIY discount store nearby, and Monterey House mex. restaurant more towards Main/90. Also Meyer Speedway, near the stadium. I have the 1981 Citadel yearbook.
  6. Great to see your comments and notes about old SW Houston. I'm also a graduate of Westbury High (1982) and remember most of those landmarks. I think I have some pictures of Westbury Square, if you're still interested.

  7. Yeah, these stand out in my mind too; * I remember a Globe store, but it was on the opposite side of the 610 West Loop from Meyerland Mall (alongside Beechnut). I found a metallic storage container the other day, with a Globe price sticker on it. * I remember the many U-Tote-M stores and wonderful totem pole signs * I remember a drive-in movie theater near Hillcroft and Bellaire. * There was a restaurant I think called Across the Street, on Hillcroft near Westheimer, and people placed their meal orders by phones at the table JR
