  1. I just hope that midtown doesnt become like the areas east of downtown and west of downtown with all the suburban styled apartment buildings and then those ugly tin box buildings that seem to be popping up everywhere. I hope it is mostly all developments like this in the future.

Agreed, I really like the renderings for this apartment complex. CityPlace is looking very good too. Nice wide gathering area in front of the lobby with some small steps and railing. They also have balconies/patios on the first floor. I know some people would be concerned about people breaking in but it is the same idea as having a front door to your townhome... Should make the place a little more lively.

  2. Very nice, the entire old boy scouts lot has a construction fence around it too

    http://www.culturemap.com/newsdetail/09-29-10-scout-honor-hearsay-group-to-turn-former-boy-scout-building-into-midtown-destination/?mobileview=on

"Landmark Houston Hospitality Group, the folks behind Hearsay and soon-to-be open The White House, are renovating the 1950s Boy Scouts of America building in Midtown and converting it into a mixed-use development.

The group, which is known for restoring and re-purposing historic spaces (Hearsay is housed in the Foley-Kennedy building, built in 1889) plan to dub the city-block-sized space Scout Square.

The development at 1911 Bagby, which will see the addition of one floor and a seven-story parking garage, will include 50,000 square feet of retail and office space. Anchor tenants include Moor's Restaurant and Hooka Bar, a Moroccan-themed eatery, and a Black Finn Saloon. Additional tenants are yet to be announced, but Landmark will keep a portion of the space to develop its own concept.

Phase I of the development, which is bordered by Brazos, Pierce, and Bagby, is slated to break ground in mid-November."

  3. As someone who rides BRT, and may soon ride its successor "ExpressBus", I can tell you that BRT isn't all that great. It's good for some situations, but is far from a magic pill for traffic ills.

This is a picture of Lima's bus system. Definitely helpful but Lima still has loads of traffic... But they also don't have a highway system nearly as extensive as ours.

  4. soft opening? When is the 'official' opening?

    I'm eager to go!

Barcadia is expanding into the open retail space behind their current location... it will include bowling and more games. Should be pretty good. They are also going to start serving brunch there as well.

  5. Let me put it another way for the humorless among us. If a building has a working toilet, then it will already have moving parts. Those parts, which move in a clockwise direction, provide a good rhetorical analog to my opinion of the moving parts that are the subject of this thread.

haha i think everyone already understood what you were saying....

  6. Perhaps someone should start a thread to promote buildings with moving parts, much as someone has for promoting downtown lighting. Therein, we can all find the courage to flush toilets on an excessive and unnecessary basis and contribute to ecological degradation.

Sounds good but only for buildings with moving parts in Houston, otherwise I don't really care to comment.

  7. I have seen guys rummaging around in the empty lot across from the future Alis (where the parking garage is supposed to go) over the last couple of weeks....they are measuring, pointing, talking, measuring some more...etc...

I was driving by at lunch and saw one of those temporary buildings that contractors use at construction sites at the Old Boy Scout's parking lot - it was hitched to the back of a truck and was either being moved into or out of the parking lot. I don't remember if it was always there or not.

  8. Yeah, because I think Dallas is the only Texas city with a NYE event (though I'm sure SA has one). They're clever, in that they always have a Stars game that lets out right when "Big D NYE" starts. Hopefully Glowrama grows. I believe the Rockets usually have a NYE game at home. Maybe they could try directing a lot of the crowd towards Discovery Green (what a great development this is turning out to be). They need to put some fireworks on the top of the GRB.

For sure man. They had fireworks but they weren't as high as I wanted them to be.

  9. Has anybody heard any additional info about this?

This is just a guess but I'm thinking they were just testing to make sure everything was in working order and then plan on putting them back in once Hess moves in. Hess is probably paying higher than average rent for this place and they want to use the turbines as a marketing/advertising tool once they move in. Maybe? I don't know...

  10. I'm rather curious what the attendance numbers were. I do hope they change the name, though. Quite a few of my friends who watched enjoyed the show overall and were thinking of going next year.

I'm a litte late on the response but I have to say I definitely had a good time... but I was only at Glowarama for about 45 minutes (we got there just before they started doing the fireworks).

Other than that it was a solid downtown night. Dinner at houston pavilions, followed by Four Seasons hotel party, then Glowarama and back to the hotel again... the suite was pretty cheap (I guess cheap compared to what I expected) - only 267 with tax and it was an excellent room. The best part of it was that downtown was absolutely hoppin - people all over the place.

I'm just happy to see a major public/outdoor NYE event in Houston and I hope it gets bigger, better, and more adult oriented. If someone does comes across the attendance numbers please post them.

  11. so i was biking around houston on saturday and i noticed some filming going on downtown... The cops had all 4 streets around Jones Hall blocked off. There was a blacked out (lights and everything - black) ML 350 benz with a camera on it hauling ass around the corners with a Hyundai Elantra following closely behind it. At first I thought it could (by some small chance) be a car chase seen for a movie but the guy coordinating the whole thing told me it was just a car commercial. Still, be on the lookout!

  12. is there construction going on over at la patio as well?i noticed some girders there that I haven't seen before.

if that is the case, then I hope the results are better than their patio.

ya there is but I think it is a different bar going in

  13. Appreciate the update!

    L&G,

I got some updates. so "Wonder Bar" is going in where Tipsy Clover use to be and they are planning on opening this Friday (Jan 7). Also, "Wunder Bar" is going in right next to Ruby Tequilas near Louisiana and McGowen.

Apparently it is a completely different concept and just a coincidence that they have the same name... strange but it is what it is.

  14. There was an article in the Chronicle today outlining some new developments in the Midtown area that sound incredible... Houston Chronicle

    In short:

    1. Big white mansion at Elgin @ Austin will be renovated ($3 million cost) into a new upscale restaurant, lounge, and event center

    2. Old Boy Scouts of America building at Bagby and Victor: Work on the Boy Scouts building will begin in February. The $20 million project will include Moor's Restaurant and Tapas Lounge, serving mainly Moroccan and Spanish cuisine and be leased and operated by Hicham Naffaa and Ali Bendella, owners of Coco's Crepes, Cava American Bistro and Cielo Mexican Bistro. The building, scheduled to open in October, will also have banquet space and Chopra's offices.

    3. Parking garage w/ retail: Across the street, Chopra owns land on which he plans to build a seven-story public garage with street-level retail. (NOTE: I believe this is the lot at Bagby and Victor across the street from Christian's Tailgate)

Here's a Google view of the areas being talked about:

    Old Mansion

Boy Scout building and new garage w/ retail across street

    Guys,

Do you think the closing down of Cielo's downtown will delay Ali's plan to remodel the Old Boy Scouts of America building?

Any updates for #2 and #3 listed above?
