I am a HUGE fan of Hubcap and Christians, but I was at Ruggles last night and their Kobe burger looked incredible. It seemed like every table had ordered it.
Has anyone tried Stanton City Bites on Houston Street? I hear great things but would like to know how it stacks up. Someone needs to organize a Heights burger throwdown!

Truly sad to hear. Admittedly, I did not eat there nearly as often as I thought about eating there... shame on me. The food was wonderful, especially the leek terrine, so I hope the chef can be a part of a different (more successful) venture in the area again soon.

Best burgers in town in my opinion! Now I won't have to drive "all the way" to I-10 and Washington... I can bike to White Oak and rationalize that I've negated the burger. This is the best news I've received all week!

The wife and I finally tried "Heights West" at the recommendation of some neighbors and I must say that we were really impressed. We sat outside which offered zero ambiance, but other than that we had a great experience - the food was outstanding, the service was friendly and prompt, and the chef came out to chat with us a bit.
I'm not going to make this a food review, but I wanted to post because I really hope this place survives. They are relying only on word of mouth and I know that I would have overlooked it if it wasn't recommended to me first.

What a great idea!
My list would be:
- Vietnam Restaurant (spicy fried eggplant)
- Christian's Tailgate (burgers are some of the best i've ever had)
- Candelari's (although seems to be going downhill in quality lately?)
- Asia Market (truly incredible Thai)
- Mam's House of Ice
I'm probably just under the quota on Berryhill, El Rey, Chilosos, Lola andSpanish Flowers.

A lot has certainly changed since this thread first started.
I thought this thread was new at first and then found it fascinating to see how dining options have changed in the past few years. Now I wish I went to Jazzy's Cafe before they closed... shame.
I'd still cast a strong vote of desire for a good local Indian place. I've spoken with a number of people recently who asked me if there was one in the Heights.

I'm glad someone else has discovered Mango Beach as well... my wife and I stumbled by it the other day after complaining that we couldn't get fresh lemonade on the go anywhere in the area. Problem solved at Mango Beach! The guy was super friendly and the fresh fruit drinks were wonderful (and, if I remember right, the "jumbo" size was only a bit more than the small and was freakin' huge).
I still love Mam's and don't complain about the prices, although I wish they were set up to be a bit quicker. Mango Beach and Mam's are the only things that get me through these crazy hot summers. That and air conditioning, I suppose.

Looks like there is something new going in on TC Jester close to I-10. Anyone know what it is? If it is mentioned here I've missed it. Years ago I think the building was one of those really shady massage parlors.

Thanks everyone! This is really helpful information. Since when is a Corolla not a high-end European car? That salesman totally ripped me off

Does anyone know of a reasonable and good quality auto shop where I could get a new bumper for a Toyota Corolla? The structural part is fine, I just need the aesthetic part. Bonus points if the paint will match and the process is virtually hassle-free. I can find bumpers online but who has the time?

Saw signs in the windows on my way back from Fiesta - Opening Tuesday, October 7.
Did it open? Anyone been there yet?

AWESOME! After over a month with no response I just figured I had posted a really lame question that no one cared about. Thanks for the info!

Sunday I was told that Cedar Creek will be open "within a month." Apparently the head chef at Dry Creek is going to head up things there and he is leaving Dry Creek in 2 weeks.
I NEED to get invited to the grand opening...

I think anything like a neighborhood coffee shop, boutique, day spa, specialty grocer, etc would be great but the location isn't really that convenient for a lot of the Heights area residents. A Trader Joes would be incredible but I won't hold my breath. Although, if Tycer can open up Textile on 22nd and Cedar Creek can open on 20th I guess anything is possible.
I'd take anything other than: another tex-mex place, another used car lot, an empty abandoned "Shady" grocery. Townhomes wouldn't be my first pick, but better than what is there now.
Does anyone else think the price is a little high?

They are now advertising open positions, so hopefully it won't be long. I've glanced inside and there is a long bar and a lot of seating area... can't tell if it is going to be more of a bar or more of a restaurant but they seem to be hiring all types. It appears there will be early morning coffee and a good wine selection at night. The waitstaff with "flair" worries me a little
The ad is Here.

I guess I should start a new thread, but I think it is time for the "dry" deal to go away.
I assume there is a way to get rid of the "dry" ordinance if enough people take action, right? Is there anyone who can explain how this would work? The whole thing confuses me, given that Shade can be a private club and sell alcohol to anyone with an ID. I'm sure Shade loves the situation though, the place was completely packed on Saturday night.

Apparently at the last Shady Acres meeting Peter Brown said that would encourage rear alleys if he is elected mayor. From what I've seen, this post is exactly right when it says that Peter Brown can talk a lot and say nothing. He also says that Houston is the second most dangerous city in the nation next to Dallas... where did he get this? From what I remember seeing we are nowhere near the top of the list.
On the subject of alleyways, I personally prefer lots with a dedicated drive that goes to a detached garage behind the house. It takes up some yard but you don't have a street facing garage. I guess it all depends on how big the lot is.

Interesting... do you mean the pastor's last name is actually "Fake" or is it a fake? A quick google search finds only obituaries of people that reference teaching or attending Timbergrove Baptist Church. HCAD still has the ownership as "Timbergrove Baptist Church" but good luck finding any more information than that through a tax bill since it is exempt.

I'd even be in favor of a neighborhood (rather then City of Houston) pool. It would require a lot of organization and effort, but it would offer us more control over its upkeep and quality.
My wife and I have been looking for a pool in the area. I think neighborhood pools with a reasonable fee is the way to go. I hear that Garden Oaks has one I am planning on looking into. I have no idea how the Heights or Shady Acres would coordinate creating one, but I would definitely join it if they did.
To answer the original question though, yes, I am all for paying a fee (per use or per month, whatever) to use Houston pools if they are kept in good shape. I didn't even know there were current options for using Houston pools, so I guess that speaks to their current level of attractiveness.

I just saw that one of the old hispanic bars on 19th street between Durham and Beall has been renamed the "Big Star Bar." This is close to the new Cedar Creek. Anyone know anything about this place?

I was told the expansion will start late summer.
Yesterday the checkout lady told me that the Kroger employees have been told work on the expansion will start in September. I also saw a "for lease" sign in some of the office space that I thought Kroger would be expanding into, so I'm a little confused about that.

On the subject of a dog park, I would love to see one north of I-10 inside the loop, and Shady Acres would be all that much better but where could it go ?
This is my vote for the location of the dog park that I have been pitching to neighbors for a while... don't know how to actually make it work though. Ready? Here it goes: There is an abandoned Eckerd's at the corner of 18th and E TC Jester that is in the floodway. Because it is in the floodway the land is basically worthless and the building is a total eyesore. That being the case, why couldn't the building be demolished and the area converted to a dog park? If the city isn't going to allow people to do anything else with the land then they should at least put it to public use. Just my (wonderful) opinion.

Yes. It also makes the creek and green space on the west side of the creek more prominent. I would not be surprised, however, if that little green space serves (in part, at least) as overflow parking at busy times.
I noticed that the nice lot directly behind Cedar Creek has been cleared of debris and there are some "no parking / tow away" signs at the lot that say "Cedar Creek" on them. Does anyone know if Cedar Creek actually owns this lot too? If so, I wonder what they plan to do with it... I'm hoping it won't be a parking lot since they've already built one. Maybe a nice outdoor space for something else?

Woah! This totally sucks. How did you find this out? Is Freebird's still in?
Phew. I'm answering my own question. Looks like Freebirds is still in, but I'm totally disappointed at the lameness of this plan. Subway... Matress Firm... Radio Shack... Payless Shoes... Cash Store... Dickey's. Are you kidding me? This is discouraging my trips to Target.
Does anyone know if there are plans available for the Orr development on Heights? (discussed on another forum maybe?)

I know this post is old, but was searching for recommendations to do hardscaping/landscaping in my backyard and ended up using Isabel Corvera. He was great! He listened to my needs/ideas and then came back a week later with a full landscape architectural plan for the back yard completed scoped and estimated. Some others wanted $600 just to do that and he did it without me asking him. It was a huge help to visualize everything and plan out the work in phases according to my budget. He is very thoughtful and detailed and executed the work quickly. I also believe he is very honest in the work he does all around. Thanks to the HAIF members for this recommendation!
