How interesting that this information about the Evergreen Negro Cemetery should come up now. I just found out a few days ago that my great great grandfather was buried at Evergreen in 1919. I talked about Evergreen with my great uncle on the phone earlier today (he was the deceased's grandson) and apparently, no gravestone exists for my great great grandfather.
I went out on Feb. 12,2009 and took pictures of every gravestone in the Evergreen negro Cemetery. I first took some photos back in 1985 but it was overgrown and I had to crawl on my hands and knees just to get to the tombstones.
A very interesting cemetery. Needs more restoring......

Now thats a good question. Who is paying the taxes?
I thought for sure there was a cemetary section on this forum and this would get shoved in there.
On a seperate note. Does anyone know what the name of the little cemetary is on Lockwood and 610 frwy?
They finally cleared it a few years ago and placed a white fence all around it. It was also neglected for years. Now that one has to be historic big time!
Its across the street from Cozy Kitchen Barbecue and over a few blocks by 610.
It is the Evergreen Negro Cemetery, Est. 1896. The City of Houston cut the cemetery in two when put Lockwood thru it. Graves were moved elsewhere???

The old Church of St. Vincent de Paul (Was located at Franklin Ave. and Caroline Street) first mass in 1842. The church purchased a tract of land for burial purposes from the Kennedy estate. Which became St. Vincent Cemetery. John Kennedy was murdered outside of the Kennedy Corner Building in 1878. He is buried in the St. Vincent Cemetery.
Mainly Irish-Catholic, the cemetery was founded in 1853. Early French and Italian settlers, veterans of San Jacinto, Confederate and Union soldiers. (Dick Dowling) hero of Sabine Pass-Civil War, was Irish is buried there. Many were buried here in 1867 during the yellow fever epidemic. The City of Houston condemned the cemetery in 1871. The cemetery was damaged in the 1900 and 1915 hurricanes. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (1913) Present Church built 1923.

depending on the race of the people sitting on those graves it would either be appalling or no big deal at all.....one large culture now in Texas sees nothing wrong at all with sitting on graves, stones, or markers because they view their dead and their observance of the dead in a much different fashion than many others do
so while you might have seen it as disrespect to the graves or the dead they saw it as common ordinary behavior based on what they do as celebration in their own country and in no way viewed it as or intended it as disrespect to the graves or the dead in them
I am just saying they should take care of this cemetery. I don't care if they crawl all over the graves which we do not do in our country. It is in a locked gate and protected from the outside but is slowly being destroyed from the inside. Many buried here were Irish. I don't care where you are from, it still is disrepectful..........

I went to this church on Jan. 9,2009. I needed to take photos of the St. Vincent Cemetery. The church was built in 1923. Got permission from FATHER RICK to go into the cemetery which is behind a locked gate. Sorry to say but the cemetery is not in great shape. I took photos in 1985 and it looked better back then. Loose stones are in their wrong spots. Turned over gravestones. Missing linch gates. Some gravestones grouped together and cemented on a concrete base. Benches and shade covers built over graves. Trash on grounds, tree limbs piled on top of graves.
They need to take better care of this cemetery!!!!!
Thanks

I drove by Rufus Cage School on Nov. 20,2008. Walked around the fence which was open and took a lot of pictures. It now sits empty and unused. The metal rain cover over the porch has fallen. The wood trim on the top and the wood covering the porch is damaged and has large holes. I went to this school in 1965-1968. I sure would hate to see another Historic Houston Building get torn down because no one cares.
Here is my website on this school. http://cageschool.webs.com/

It was used as a farm area for the poor but mainly to bury the poor. On death cert.'s it states that the person is buried (Poor Farm, or County, or P. F., Potterfield, Poor Farm Ditch) I went thru death cert.'s 1910-1912 and already have 500 persons buried there. The cemetery was in use 1894-1937. There were a lot of people buried there. In 43 years that would be a lot of burials and a large area would be needed. Guessament of 43 years X 200 burials a year = 8,600 graves?

Cemeterywolf,
Are you saying that The poor farm was a cemetery only, and not some type of working farm or house?

Rhino

The POOR FARM was a cemetery for Harris Co.,Texas. 1894-1937. In 1937 all remains moved to the newer Harris County Cemetery in one mass grave. I am going through death cert.'s and making a list of those buried here. It would state burial at POOR FARM or COUNTY, P. F. Most are black, some white and hispanic. Large number of stillborn and young babies buried here also. Very sad. Being poor really sucked. Most names are lost forever.
Hope to have a list soon.

Has anyone heard of Camp Killkare owned by John Henry Kirby.
It was located on Armand Bayou (Middle Bayou), above Clear Lake.
Is there any photos or history of this place. It shown on a 1929 map of the Clear Lake area.
Thanks.

Hey - I used to be at that church in the late 80s. The sanctuary at the corner of Fulton and Link was built in the late 1930's.
The history of the congregation - however - goes back to 1887 - I know that because we celebrated our centennial in 1987.
At one time, the name of the church was St. Luke's Methodist. (Unrelated to the big St. Luke's on Westheimer.) The name was changed as a tribute to the Reid family at the time of the sanctuary construction.
If I am not mistaken, the church originally went by the name of White Oak. This was when this was open country - "a long way from Houston." We used to have some pictures of the little white building - in the same location - it looked very rural.
I have some vague recollections about the cemetery....but nothing for sure.
Recently the original congregation has dwindled and it merged with a Spanish-speaking congregation - also United Methodist - that now comprises the bulk of the membership. Thus it is likely that few of the present leaders will have much information about the building's history.
Thanks for the info. Would you have any pictures of the little white building?

I had gotten a email about the Reid Memorial United Methodist Church located at 5203 Fulton, Houston,Texas. It had at one time a cemetery next to it called BROOKS CEMETERY. The church decided to expand around the 1940's so family of the deceased were asked to move their loved ones. Most were moved, some were not. Mary E. Peterson said her Grandfather William Henry Shackelford born 1883 ARK died in Houston 1913 is buried there. The problem is the church has no records. Where her grandfather is buried is covered over with a building and a paved driveway.
1. Would any one know how old the church building is?
2. Would any one know of or has heard of the Brooks Cemetery.
3. How could I find out what was located at this location back before 1940?
Thanks for any help.

Some of us maybe confused? I assumed Magnolia Park was an actual City Park (like in playground).
Not sure if public would be interested in seeing household items? Sound more like an anitques roadshow kind of thing? Just wondering if you could be more specific.
