  1. Looking for info on homes that were located along Strang Road at Sen's Road near Brinson Point and Du Pont Plant.

Pictures or maps showing homes. There was a murder case about a man who killed his family in one of these homes, it had a large pool.

I think this happened in the 1980's? I remember going to this spot when I was younger and walking through the woods pass the old pool covered in green slim and the empty house in which the so called murders happened. This may have been a urban legend? Been almost 30 years so I am not sure?

Need some great minds on this one..................

  2. In the early 1850's a Stage Coach Inn was established about 75-100 yards south of the gully in what is now Mangum Manor Park and most of the back yards of the houses that back up to the park from Poinciana. This was part of the Stage line from San Antonio to Houston. During the Civil war there was a battle of Bear Creek where 5 Yankee soldiers were killed. The stage came through that area just after the battle. They stopped the stage and put the dead soldiers on to be taken to the Inn for burial. They were buried under the big oak trees that are by the Tennis court.

    99th Illinois Infantry

September 8,1862 was sent to Rolla, Mo., thence, September 17, to Salem, Dent county, thence, November 20, to Houston, Texas. Was assigned to the Brigade of Brigadier General Fitz Henry Warren. Was engaged in a skirmish at Bear Creek, losing 1 killed, 4 wounded and 1 taken prisoner.

I guess the 4 wounded died and made 5 dead Union Soldiers.

  3. http://hti.math.uh.e...01/06.01.10.pdf

...article containing info. on Galena Park & Clinton, mentioning the Christian Aid Cemetery.

Mentions struggles African Americans endured, even with burial of their families, often taken to hometowns or buried on their own land, and talks of the Christian Aid Cemetery eventually being founded, mentions the freeway built over the cemetery, remains were moved to another cemetery, see pages 134, top of pg. 139. The document says it was a large cemetery.

    Excellent historic documentation.

Thank you so much for this info. I was also working on this cemetery too. AAAAAAA+++++++

  4. I agree, if it was there, the small possible family burial plots would have been moved, present location would sit either within the industrial park (nearest roads being Maxine, Industrial, and Turning Basin), or lost to freeway construction.

Cemeterywolf, where did you hear about the cement wall? Just curious.

From website Burials of Harris Co.,Texas.

    Galena Park Cemetery?

    (w. of Clinton Dr, n. of the Houston Ship Channel, about 200 yards from the old Dickinson Gun Plant site. The cemetery is surrounded by a 4 foot cement wall.}

I was just wondering myself were they got this info?

  5. Looking for info or location of the old Dickinson Gun Plant site. Near there is or was the Galena Park,Cemetery? West of Clinton Dr, north of the Houston Ship Channel, about 200 yards from the old Dickinson Gun Plant site. The cemetery is surrounded by a 4 foot cement wall?

    Could this location be reach?

    Thanks for any info.

  6. I went out to the Kuhlmann Family Cemetery today on Roseneath. Went back in the woods were the cemetery would be. Near the back of the woods, next to a small gully is the 30' by 30" wall of hand made bricks. This is were the graves of this family would be. There are no markers in this area. BUT down a small slope in the gully is two marble stones that would be from the cemetery. The large one is to heavy to turn over to see if it has a name on it . The other small one is blank. These may be the bases to the gravestones that once were there. I don't think the graves have been moved. I could be wrong. Here is some pics from it.

  8. I was lucky enough to live next to Freedmen's Town (Freedmenstown?) before it was bulldozed and became Townhouse Central. No, it wasn't a great place. It was ugly and dirty and run down and frankly a little scary, even to someone my size. But I'm a big believer in preserving history, and a lot of early Houston history was lost in that place.

I recently found out about a project to preserve and spread a little bit of Freedmen's Town's legacy: Freedman Plantlets

They're cuttings taken from one of the last remaining plants in Freedmen's Town before it was scraped clean. People are signing up for pieces which they plant in their yards and help cultivate a little history.

I don't know how much they cost, but I know sevfiv has one. Maybe she'll fill in the details.

I received a small box of Freedman Plantlets in the mail last week. Already planted and they grow fast. The cost is FREE!!!!!! FREE POSTAGE. Really nice lady.!!!!!!!!

  9. Which one is La Porte cemetary...the one by Little Cedar Bayou??

Yes, but there are two on Little Cedar Bayou, the other is Cedarhurst Cemetery which was La portes first city cemetery.

The 2nd city cemetery La Porte Cemetery was started in 1907.

  10. NEED HELP!!!!!

Need help on finding a article on a old cold case. There is a tombstone in the La Porte Cemetery which states "A LITTLE DARLING FOUND MURDERED AT THE END OF LOVERS LANE April 21,1950". Lovers Lane was on Powell Road or Goatmans Road in La Porte. Would there be a article on it in the Post or Chronicle? Could anyone look this up for me or tell me how to find it?

    Thanks.:doh::huh:

  11. Hi everyone, I'm not an architect (my college roommate/friend is though, at aTm!) but I've noticed that you guys sometimes mention the now defunct Game's People Play on 1960. This was an iconic part of my childhood as well, as I often remember going by it all the time when going to the Champion's Country Club Pool. I also remember getting to go there a couple of times.

I started a Wikipedia entry to somehow cement this in history, however, my first mistake was taking a google satellite view of the place (which is still clearly visible and crazy to see) I got around that, however, my article has no references and may or may not be notable. the only search engine links are to forum entries, which may not justify itself as a reference. I could use newspapers, but I haven't made it to a library (what are those these days anyway?)

Check it out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_People_...(amusement_park). If anybody is more wiki savy than me or thinks they could help, go for it!!

Here is a old coupon from Games People Play 1982.

    Enjoy......

  12. There were 2 diffrent theatres at Almeda each in the same parking lot but on diffrent sides. One night I was there with some friends and we were waiting in line to see a movie. Soem kids came up in a fancy custom car did a few donuts and burn outs then shot across the parking lot towards the other. About half way across the car suddenly gave a lurch and there was a gring noise. Evidently they did not know or forgot about the big curb dividing the parking lot down the middle. Luckily no was hurt but I think they ended up ripping their under carriage out as well as a few other things. When we got out of our movie two hours later they were still out there with a tow truck and a few police.

Would any one know the names of the two Theatres at Almada Mall? I have old movie ticket stubs from both I think? One set says Almeda Theatres and the other may be (Almeda East 5) ? Not sure on the last one.

    Thanks
