  1. Three months in my awesome new mcm home and Nationwide canceled my insurance because we have a "flat roof." It's not actually flat, but apparently it's low-pitched enough to call flat. I'm young and ignorant...this is my first house...any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

State Farm is where I got mine. Brian O'Rear at the Town and Country office is the place to call. I also got terminated by Nationwide and that was just after they replaced my roof!

  2. That home is hideous and of course we have several of those now in Memorial Bend (I live on Figaro) but they are just a tad worse than some of the remodel jobs on the mid century modern homes. Classic architecture is not valued here in Houston for the most part. I do not think there are enough people in Houston that know much about architecture to preserve what valuable architecture we have remaining. It's just a mess.

Was in the area this evening (a little glary from the sun, but you get the idea):

  3. I believe much of the blame for the destruction of Memorial bend architecture is the Memorial Bend Architecture Committee. They should be the gatekeeper and protect the architecture. Instaed, they have given these builders a license to create whatever they want. Do not blame the builders.

There are homes that integrate and become part of a whole; there are homes that while not necessarily integrating in terms of style are stand-outs and become part of a collective; then there are houses that have virtually no ties to style or form, possessing no conceptual platform other than a container for people with applied stylistic elements.

Guess which of the preceding types is currently under construction at 523 Electra.

This item would not be as significant a topic if this was a speculative project... but as it is a custom home for the property owners there ought to be something in place to assure a degree of sensitivity to the overall neighborhood context is upheld.

    Call me a dreamer...

  4. I have recently bought a mod house and would like to remodel the poorly done 80s kitchen. Could anyone recommend interior designers who are familiar with mid-century design? Many thanks.

I've been through the search as I remodeled my entire house which is a classic mid century modern. Chuck Bosch at Built INC is the only guy in town to do the job. He is an architect and gc so he can do everything. he does a fantastic job. Please email me at chlo888@yahoo.com for his phone number.

  5. Hi texasdago,

In Brian's defense I have to remind you that Brian did not develop the new house that you see. We all need to make a living. I was a real estate agent in Los Angeles and I reserved my judgement on each listing I had. My job was to sell the house and bring home money to support my family. My opinion of the house was irrelevant.

texasdago lemme know if you want to come by and see the house. I think you'll appreciatte it.

    Regards,

    Glenn

    Hi All,

I wanted to show some photos of the house we just finished in the Bend. I'll get photos of the interior soon. This house is right next door to our old house (that I currently have listed for sale)...

    Regards,

    Glenn

  7. Jason,

I understand your sentiments very well. I bought the house next door so I will be here surrounded by tasteless architecture. What I was talking about was purely a financial mindset. Buyers can feel good about buying a lower priced home in a million dollar neighborhood.

FYI, I remodeled the house next door and it's turned out very well. Pleas come by if you have a chance.

    Regards,

    Glenn

  8. Thanks for the comments. Actually the price is very reasonable considering what you can get for the 77024 zip code and inMemorial bend for under $500k. In addition we now have a recent sell of $1.3 million for a home right down the street. It's a mcmansion but I would assume at some point there will be many more so thsi is an opportunity to own a well done home in this neighborhood while the million dollar homes surround you. Again, I will post better pictures this week as we are having the house painted for the sale.

    Regards,

    Glenn

  9. Hi Robert,

Take a ride around the corner to 12810 Figaro in Memorial Bend. I know it's not Spring Valley but it's very close to the school in your picture. There sits a classic mid century modern. In fact, imo, it's the best one in Memorial Bend and Houston. I'm slightly biased since I have it under contract (private transaction)!

    Best Regards,

    Glenn

  10. There are some pretty cool ones on North and South MacGregor south of University of Houston.

Can you post a map? I'm not familiar with the location and I'm currently looking for a great mod to buy.

    Thanks.
