  1. I lived at the Penguin Arms in 1988 in one of the upstairs apartments. Although, it made for good party conversation to brag that I lived there, it had a lot of major faults. The mold smell on the carpeting in the hallway was enough to make me hold my breath as I walked in. I had to disconnect my oven because of the gas leak. The clincher was when the landlord used to let himself in while I was at work to go through my things. Not to mention the people who would stand on the lawn taking pictures of the place while I was walking around in my nightgown. It was fun for a couple of years when i was a lot younger. Shame that they have let the place go to such decay.
  2. I can feel your pain. I live on W. Cottage and just got power back yesterday afternoon. Very frustrating to be the last person on my block to get reconnected. Hang in there.
  3. I saw a sign for "Anytime Fitness" opening up in the renovated Eckard's on 11th at Yale. Anyone know anything about them? It looks like they have subdivided the building although there is only the one entrance.
  4. Looks like they are putting the finishing touches on the new bank on 11th where the old HEB was. Do they really think they need that much parking? It's not like the parking lot is going to be jammed pack with customers once they open unless they are giving money away. As a long time Heights resident, we could have used something more useful than another bank...maybe a newer HEB. With online banking now. Who goes to their bank anymore?
  5. Does anyone know what is happening with the closed Eckerd's? There has been a lot of activity lately on the building. I was pleasantly surprised to see a lovely art deco building exposed once all the existing exterior was taken off. Hopefully the building isn't coming down. I hope they aren't turning it into a new CVS. (Edit: this was posted prior to the topic merging)
