  1. Watch out for those supermarket discount cards. A website called "nocards.org" says that what you buy is kept in a computer database and it's sold to other businesses. For example, a supermarket sold someone name and what they bought to their health insurance company. When the insurance company saw that the person bought a lot of red meat, they increased his premium. They contend that too much red meat is bad for your health.

Don't worry, my shopping card is in the name if Mike Hunt.

  2. I think that a lot of reason for urban downtown movement being faster in Austin than in Dallas or Houston is because of the road system. It is like a roach motel. It is enticing to get into downtown, but once you are there, you find it really hard to get out, therefore, you might as well settle until you die.

  3. The Weingarten house was demolished by the family. One of the family members said on the movie, "This is My House it is not For Sale" said that she was happy to see it was torn down because she did not feel it would have been taken care of properly. She said that it would have been like watching a beautiful old lady deteriorate before your eyes.

I also know that Jack Ceasar's house was saved and moved somewhere else. Does anyone know where that house is?

  4. When it really comes down to it, I think Houston is pretty diverse. I grew up in Dallas and it seems to be more of a corporate/finance city that is dependent on the more "blue-collar" cities like Houston to keep their economy going.

Houston has several things that will help it "buck the norm" when it comes to the economy. Not only does Houston have the energy industry, but also a shipping port, NASA, and one of the steadiest real estate markets in the country. I feel and have banked my future on Houston because of it consistency. I think it is a good bet.

  5. When, I lived in Dallas near Dallas Love Field airport I lived a mile from Fiesta, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, and Kroger. We had HEB stores, but only in the suburbs and not in Dallas proper.

Also, I still have my Tom Thumb Discount Card and can use it at Randall's. The Randall's, Tom Thumb, and Simon David logo are on the back of it. I have also heard that Publix (which is in the eastern states) is owned by Safeway as well.

  6. Alan,

Welcome to the forum. My wife and I are finishing up a house right now in riverside terrace and we simply love the neighborhood. I truly think it is one of the hidden gems in Houston. Sure there is crime, but there is crime everywhere. If you are ever see yourself in the area again feel free to contact me and stop by. We would love to show you around our great neighborhood.

    Matthew

  7. Spikey, it would be great if you could screen the film at a civic club meeting. We have new residents who haven't seen the film, and some older residents who haven't seen the film in a while. That would be cool. Have popcorn, sodas, ok, maybe I'm thinking a little big, but you get the point. ;)

I would love to see a group of people get together and watch this.

My wife and I are on the finishing touches of our 4 month remodel. Maybe we can host a viewing at the house if someone can bring their copy.

  8. I just saw your post; I like hearing such positivity about Riverside Terrace. We bought one of the (seemingly-hated-by-this-forum) Urban Lofts on Calumet a couple of years ago. I have felt dedicated to this neighborhood but I'm having doubts lately. Someone was just (literally moments ago) shot outside our house in Riverside Park. There is an endless problem with other neighborhood residents throwing trash all over the neighborhood. There's broken glass and condoms all over the jungle gym in the park. This urban mama is starting to actually long for the suburbs, for a safer, cleaner place to raise my kids. But I sure do love the commute from here.

I don't have much money (hence the townhouse purchase) so options to move are limited. Those police lights outside right now make me wonder though.

I have to say that Riverside Park has always scared me a little. There is always traffic (people walking around and starring at you as you drive by) in that area. What I don't understand is why they church that neighbors the park does not get involved with the crime. That is one thing I have noticed about this area. People do not want to get involved and turn their head if they see any wrongdoing. That really needs to stop.

Sarah, your area will change, but it will be one of the last to change in Riverside. I would give it a couple of years before you start to see anything major though. We all do need to organize together to spur on the change and get the word out. Riverside is a diamond in the rough. The location is fantastic, the homes are beautiful, the lots are huge. What more can a home buyer ask for. Sure there is crime, but there is crime everywhere, and the more and more we buy the homes, the more of the criminals get bought out and have to move somewhere else. I am not saying that I want them to take their crime somewhere else, but if you are surrounded and concentrated by criminals like you have a tendency to have in Riverside's infamous Riverside Park, Tip Top Grocery, or any run down apartment complex, you are going to have a better tendency of doing a crime. Am I wrong about this?

On the other hand, the crime is not the Riverside that I know. Since I have had my "incident" with my neighbor, I have had every other neighbor come up to me and tell me not to pay attention to that "stupid" lady. They are happy to see me fixing up houses in the are and are very receptive. I know you will feel the same welcome if you come into this area. Sure their might be a few bad eggs left, but they are literally dying off everyday.

On a lighter note, Sarah, there is a seafood resturant that is close to your condo. Do you know if it is open or how good the food is? It might be a perfect place to have lunceons and community gatherings.
