  1. i tried looking for other topics that might mention this, but what is going on there?

Are you talking about the site that across the Hadley from Lil Woodrows. I believe they are putting in a shopping center there. I have not been over there in a few months so I might be way off, but I seem to remember a sign that read: "Coming Soon - Shopping Center." Of course similar signs are all over midtown so I could be off on the location.

  2. Does anyone know when Brandon Backe will be back?

He could be back as soon as the All star break - 3-4 weeks from now or he might have to have Tommy John Surgery which typically takes a year to regain strength. Lets hope for the former.

  3. Getting one hit at home is not a good way to play either. This team has made a 180 degree turnaround. In the wrong direction. They need to bust out of this slump and quickly. I still have a little faith. -_-

FAST FORWARD 6 days. All the sudden the good guys are playing with some heart again. The pitching has been much better and the runs have started coming it. Especially yesterday. 14 runs. Wow.

They are back to .500 and 6 games back. GO STROS. :D

  4. Well, I admire your honesty. I'm 48 and recently I've learn to accept the truth and hard facts about the two things that I have always been a complete, total failure with: women & credit.

I am sorry to here that. The good news is that I have excellent credit and I found a pretty woman to marry me. Hopefully both will last !!!

  5. Oh yes, I remember the races. During the push races, sometimes the one being pushed would lose their balance and fall over, and the other racers would trip and fall all over causing a pileup on the floor. I also remember doing the Hokey Pokey. If you shook your leg the wrong way, you'd lose your balance, fall, and bust your butt on that hard wooden floor. Someone else on this forum said that he remembers playing a game called Snap The Whip, but I don't recall ever seeing, much less participating in, that game.

Do any of you remember Ladies Choice couple's skating? It's where a girl would go and ask a guy to couple skate with her.

I hated the hokey pokey. They made us do the hokey pokey in PE class in elementary school and I hated it. I heard it a few years ago and had to leave the room. Weird how a song can do that someone.

I also did not like the ladies choice time because I was goofy looking and more goofy acting. Chicks never asked me to skate so I had to sit around and wait.

  6. I never went to a dance at WB gym. I don't have many memories inside the building there. We LIVED at the pools when we were kids though and I remember a snack bar on the back side of the gym building that you could access from the outside. Do they still have 3 pools (Olympic lane pool w/ diving boards and slide, medium pool w/ deep area, and kiddie pool)? Are the tennis courts and park still there? I have many memories of days spent there.

We just moved into the neighborhood 7 months ago. I have not actually been to the pool (no kids so no real reason). My mother has a pool at her house in Briarbrove Park which works better for us. I have heard that the pool set up is very fun and family friendly. I see people there all the times and yes the tennis courts are still there.

  7. Champs on the katy freeway just before gessner and memorial city mall or rotessori (spelling?) for beef and bird on wilcrest after briar forest

Beef n Bird has been gone for a few years not. Then the owner of Chianti opened Morgan's steakhouse. It died pretty quickly and he put in a Chianti. Drove by yesterday and it looked closed for good.

  8. Kudos to Subdude for the link! Speaking of Mexican--are any of the Los Tios restraunts still around? I used to work as a busboy at the one off Fondren & Bissonnet back in '75

Yes, there are 4 that I know of. One is Westhiemer, another at Memorial and Kirkwood, another in Meyerland and the 4th is in Sugarland. I have been to 4 within the past 18 months. I love that place.

I like the #8 = Two Puff Shells and a Cheese Enchiladas.

  9. No special couple skating memories that I can remember except maybe when we had a skate night with classmates in jr. high. Oh, I also think my friends and I went a few times in early high school for kicks, so most likely couples skating with some of them but no one else. I remember those games too. I didn't have your racing abilities though -lol. Did you also limbo? I think I attended a lock-in there once too. We skated there quite a bit, but we also skated in our church gym for free when we were younger -esp. on Wednesday night while my mom was at choir practice.

Friday nights with wine and internet sound like a parent thing to me. We spend many Friday nights at home too these days. We are thinking about hitting the new drive-in so we can see new movies on the big screen w/o getting a sitter for our son. I think he's old enough that he'll like it. We can watch the first movie and then hope he drifts off to sleep so we can stay for the 2nd. I've only been to a drive-in once - to see Pretty Woman with a boyfriend in high school (have no idea where in this city it was, but it was far from us), but thought it was a lot of fun and would love to go again. Maybe soon...

    You are too funny.

I do not remember the limbo at Dairy Ashford Roller Rink.

Did you ever skate/ have a school dance at the Walnut Bend Gym. I remember that place being a palace. Fast Forward 20 years and my attending a HOA meeting there. It is not a palace, except for the palace of dirt.

As for my Friday nights. We are a partying couple that is lazy. We used to go out all the time, but lately things are a little different. My wife usually hits the gym on Sat. Mornings which means she goes to bed early and I hit the CPU for a little HAIF, online poker, or whatever floats my boat. We are sans children but seriously thinking about it. We both love kids, but don't love resposibility.

As for the drive in. My father took my sister and I to see Jaws at a drive in when I was maybe 4. I remember watching about 10 minutes and then blacking out (sleep). What is amazing is that I actually remember the experience. My pops passed away when I was 7 so I do not have too many memories, but that one sticks out. My mother was pissed off, because I was afraid of the ocean for a few years after. Like I said, I probably made it through the previews and was out, but the thought of a big shark was all I needed.

  10. I definitely remember Yamin's--great pizza bread! I used to work @Film N Photos right across from it!

I had dinner with my mother last night and she told me the restuarant I was thinking was yamin's on Hillcroft was maybe not Yamin's. We are having dinner with my aunt on Sunday who will know for sure.

  11. There is still one in Katy off Mason Rd near Kingsland (on Applewhite Rd, I think) that still does a good business. I think it's called Mason Road Skate Center. My nephew had a birthday party there a few years back.

I think there may also be one still off Highway 6 north (near Copperfield).

Yes, the Dairy Ashford one is still open (or it was last week when I drove by -lol).

There are several new drive-ins in the Houston area that have opened recently. We drove by the one in this link a few months ago and plan on going one evening soon - a great way to see movies with a toddler -lol.

I have ask since we lived parrallel lives. Did you ever couple skate at the Dairy Ashford Rink. I was usually too busy gearing up for the races they had. My buddy and I always won the derby race (one person crouches and another pushes)- I was the pusher !!! . I was pretty good at the all around speed skate, but there was some apartment kid who always won. I wonder what happened to him. Probably drank himself to death after all that early success.

My Friday's at the Rink were great. Now my friday's usually mean I am drinking a few glasses of wine and posting on this site. LOSER ALERT. :o

  12. Back on subject, can anyone see a Barnes & Noble or Borders with extended hours at the Pavillions? It'd be nice to walk to a bookstore/coffee shop at 3:30am and read a book or hang out all night on a balcony or patio downtown with no alcohol involved. I'd DEFINATELY go there after a dj set, clubbing, or hanging out at House of Blues or Main Street. Do you think other Houstonians would also?

There are plenty of 24 hour bookstores around town for you to "relax" in. I guess that is not what you mean though.

    http://www.globest.com/news/houston/

"JV Unveils 630,000-SF Energy Center Plan

HOUSTON-Looking to invest $750 million to $1 billion into a spec class A office development program, Trammell Crow Co. and Principal Real Estate Investors are rolling out their first local project: two buildings, totaling 630,000 sf on 9.4 acres. The Energy Center will be the submarket's first class A office development since 2000.

Based on today's construction costs for upper-end class A space, the 330,000-sf first phase most likely will cost $60 million to $70 million to get out of the ground. A September groundbreaking is planned for the 13-story building along Eldridge Parkway between Dairy Ashford Road and Katy Freeway. It's estimated the spec project will take a year to 14 months to deliver. ...."

That just goes to prove the point that certain segments of the Houston Office market are stronger than others. Occupancy is extremly strong in the West Houston Submarket. The Energy frims are in growth mode and are continuing their expansion to the West.

Now if we could get occupancy Downtown, Greenway, and Galleria to those lovels there would be some new spec towers built in those areas.

  14. Anyone have tips for going? We were hoping to go today and I saw online that I can buy tickets for a certain time. Does that mean if we're running late we will not be able to get in? We are hoping to go today around 3:30 ish depending on how early I can cut out of work today. We're hoping at that time the afternoon crowds will be heading out and we'll beat the evening crowds.

We made the mistake of going on Saturday at 11:00am with the rest of the free world. It cost a pretty penny and the crowd was unruly. Too many pushy people and freaks invading my personal space.

I was not impressed one bit with the exhibit, but I am also not a science person whastsoever. I like Real Estate, Numbers, Sports and booby bars.

A friend who is a personal trainer thought it was spectacular and has been back three times.

    To each his own.

  15. We must not have gone to the other often as it doesn't ring any bells, but I should have known from the name. Was it where Bayou Mama's club (I think that's the right one) was located in the late 80's, early 90's?

Yes, Across from Bayou Mamma's is a class C office building. To the West of that Building was the Theatre. The building is still there so next time you are over there drive behind Hooters and you will see what I am talking about.

As for Bayou Mamma's. We went there a few times in College too. I saw KC and Sunshine Band there in 1993. I was home for the summer from College (Colorado) and remember having the greatest time. It was right when disco was making a comeback (in a nostalgic sense). We knew all the songs and got super drunk and had a ball.

Years later the placed changed ownership catered to a different crowd. A buddy of mine and I would venture in there for some fun shows. We saw Morris Day and the Time and I think we saw the Gap Band another night (or another band from the same era). It was so much fun.

  16. Yes, but I didn't think of until now to ask: Are there still any roller rinks operating in Houston? Or did they die out like the drive-in movie theatres?

I think Dairy Ashford roller rink is still up and running. I have not been in there since I was 13, but I would love to check it out (maybe on a weekday when nobody is there).

  17. Okay, here's where our similar backgrounds come into play again. LOL I definitely remember hanging out at these theatres, but am not sure I remember exactly where the Woodlake 3 was. Was this down on Westheimer near present day Melting Pot, House of Pies, Sun and Ski, etc? If so, I remember seeing Vacation there with my family - my 1st R-rated movie -LOL. Do you remember the putt-putt that used to be across the street where Toys R Us is now? I remember seeing Annie in 82 at Westchase 5 after a LONG wait to get tickets. This was only weeks/ months after waiting 2+ hours in line to see E.T. at the small theatre in the rear corner on the ice level at the Galleria. I remember the line wrapping around the rink just to get into E.T. I also remember watching movies for 50 cents on Wednesday nights at the 2 T&C theatres while my mom went to choir practice at our church. She would drop us (w/ my siblings) off to watch a movie once we were old enough that she felt safe with it. I have many memories of those theatres as a child/ young teen. In high school we often frequented the T&C 10 that now is a part of HCC north of I-10.

Do you remember the grand old style theatre at Memorial city Mall? My parents aid it burned down when I was young, but I do have several vivid memories of it. I remember the wide, grand staircases of red "velvet" carpet leading up to the theatre (s). I remember it being "fancy", but that could just be the kid eyes I remember it through. My mom remembers it being between the food court area and what used to be the fountains/ present day playarea. Did you/ anybody ever go there?

You are thinking of Briargrove Three. Woodlake 3 was in Woodlake Sqaure at Gessner and Westheimer behind the Randall's. 10 or so years ago it turned into SRO and was a huge sports bar. It has floundered ever since.

I totally remember Putt Putt across from Briargrove Three. There was also a Go Kart place attached.

As for Memorial City. Your memories are correct. There was a big theater there that burned down. About 15 years there was another mutliplex built in the mall. It closed down 5 or so years ago (maybe more). I saw Dumb n Dumber there in 1996 or so. I believe they are building a new theater complex at the same location as the old one.

Was the T&C 10 or 12 Theaters. I think you are right. I was thinking 12, but 10 sounds correct. There was a Chili's and Bennigens right there too. I think both of those are gone too.

There was also a bar right next to the Theater that had a surf motif going. I remember going in at about 20 and drinking Mai Tai's.

    Good Stuff.

I, personally, haven't been to a movie theatre since 1998. There are two reasons why I don't go to one today: 1) the high cost of admission and snacks 2) I'm getting older with physical problems; I don't want to have to go to the restroom in the middle of a movie and have to wonder what I missed. It's like someone else just said: If you're watching a movie at home on a VCR/DVD, you can pause it if Mother Nature calls (or if someone else calls on the telephone).

I also don't like teenagers talking through all the movies and checking their cell phones for text messages from their buddies. But I still go 3-5 times a year.

  18. The location we frequented was one at the corner of Gessner and SW Freeway....in a shopping center that had a Bert Wheelers and a Pier One at one time. It is all hispanic businesses now. It was popular with Little League pizza parties and maybe with the local hippie/high school hip crowd.

I would not be suprised about the cleanliness of the places. They became "big" for several years, but then the "disco age" came in and their funkiness faded fast.

Anyone recall "Village Inn Pizza" at the corner of Bissonnet and Fondren? ALso another place Little League teams would eat pizza. They had live entertainment and lots of long tables.

I think he might have had more than one location. Who knows??

  19. Yeah, the old (now demolished) Meyerland 8 certainly had a hell of a lot more charm than the only remaining multiplex in my immediate vicinity, the Meyer Park 16.

I remember Meypark 16 opening and we were in Awe. 16 screens. We used to drive from Briargrove Park to hit movies there. Of course we were 15-17 years old and driving was there half the fun. That place has gone downhill in the past years.

I wonder when the next generation of Movie Theaters will come online. I heard they are building a new theater in Memorial City. This will be third such try at that mall that I can remember.

  20. Yamin's Pizza (from the 70's)

Are you referring to the place on Hillcroft beween Richmond and Westpark? If so I was friends with Steve Yamin. His dad owned the joint. I can not remember the ethnicity of the Yamin's. Maybe Middle Eastern of some sort, not that it matters one bit. They lived in Briarmeadow (where I lived) and Mr Yamin had a fire red Ferrarri (just like Magnum PI's). I do not know what his other business interests were but he always seemed sorta weird/shaddy to me. That could have totally been the difference in backgrounds (I am white bread). We used to swim at their pool a lot. Good family from what I remember.

My cousin also worked as a dishwasher / busboy at Yamins and has some stories about the place not being the cleanest place around. Of course he was only 14-15 when he worked there.

I think that location became Chic Topless and then was Rita's Pool Hall. It might still be, don't know.
