  1. i often wonder if the design was approved because it purposely looks like an older building in design. You know to give a more historical look to the area, instead of the OMG two years ago there was nothing here and now, presto, the new DT. i don't know, just a thought. i am hoping that another residential highrise will break ground in the next couple of years that has a more post-modern look (ie. more like Austin's towers, Mosaic or Kirby). i like the design, but am sort of perlexed as to why such a prominent building in such a prime location is not the showcase it could be. Make sense? m.
  2. Yes, and furthermore, the mayor says that in the spirit of the times this project will go up in HALF the time the Empire State Building did! m.
  3. Any updated pix. of the East Avenue Project??? Thanks, m.
  4. Humans were competing with computer AI and animals that also have intelligence (specifically apes) that have been hard wired into them. Unfortunately, it was so long ago and i was a teenager, so i barely remember the plot, just that it was set in Houston and had a cool cover. Pretty vague i know. Sorry. Thanks for all of your help! m.
  5. Hey all, i read a sci-fi book a while ago and forgot its name and author. i would like to get it for my collection of Houstonmania. Basically, it is set in the distant future (circa 2500?? i think) in Houston. The cover was an awesome artists concept which combined the H-town DT, MT and UT areas, with a bit of Tron thrown in, added to a more Shanghai look. BUT, one could make out some of the main Blvds. in Houston. Anyway, the book was so-so, but was set in future Houston, so i want it! Anyway, besides that, any other sci-fi books you all know about which feature Houston?? Let me know. thanks, m.
  6. That's hilarious! But, on a brighter note, so many other projects were completed in the past couple of years or will be in the next two, it is not all doom and gloom.......but yeah, sack cloth, ashes and wailing were a part of my Xmas festivities this year. m.
  7. How funny. i thought the EXACT same thing over the holidays as i was back and driving in my beloved H-Town for 2 1/2 weeks. Just give the EC more time (a decade) and we will see something similar to this. i predict that once the expansion of 290 along with the Hempstead Tollway is completed, the area from GP to 610/I10 is going to be a highrise cornucopia. m.
  8. 290 is developing very quickly between HWY 6 and Barker-Cypress expanding westward as well as between 290-249 eastward. i see significant growth in that area in the next 5 years. A real-estate agent friend of mine predicts another 20k people moving into that area by 2011 AND, the new Hemstead tollway is on the drawing table to run parallel to 290 which is slated to begin expansion in the 2nd quarter of 2010. Plus, talk of a new theme park could be located in and around this area. m.
  9. Anyone have an idea why the roof is taking so long to get finished? Special material or something????? m.
  10. That's a bit pessimistic don't you think? 30-40 years? Really? Think about how DT looked in 1970 versus today. Almost totally unrecognizable. m.
  11. What are they going to do with the empty lot? m.
  12. In most condos and homes those types of things are upgrades. My sister just bought a home in which the model was ULTRA GORGEOUS, but when she and her husband sat down with the designer, about 15 upgrades and $10K later, it SORT OF looked similar to the model. Personally, i think it a rip off if anything over $500k doesn't look top notch. i do understand one is paying for location, but come on, i can find this type of look in many newer H-town apts. for a lot less $$$. Again, i understand, the price tag is about location. m.
  13. Maybe this has already been addressed, but WHY is the crown off-center again? And why is it centered from that angle? i mean, wouldn't most people see it traveling on the I-10 FWY, so, to me, it would stand to reason that it should be positioned to look centered from that perspective. Any ideas? m.

    Future Austin

Man oh man is Austin coming along quickly. Austin has always been a hot spot and definitely the best place in TX, IMHO. BUT, its ascendancy to become a major metropolis is really breathtaking to watch from LA. i know many complain about it losing its small town feel and such, but i am just looking at it from an urban lovers point of view. i wonder if it would ever surpass SA or Big D in population? Any thoughts? ALSO, how long do you all think it will be before we can hardly tell where Austin ends and SA begins? i am thinking of the monsters like D-FW and the H-town megalopolis which seems to gobble up more and more of the surrounding countryside every year. m.
  15. One can only assume that the Trickle-Up phenomenon, as i like to call it, is going to come into effect. i think developers, corps., banks and such are holding their breath, waiting to see how this market mess plays out. At least, that's what i would do. Look around our country; projects almost completed will be; projects half way completed are stalled; projects which only have some sort of foundation work done are on hold indefinately; and anything proposed probably won't come down the pipeline for AT LEAST a year or so. Keep in mind our economy effects the World economy. We borrowed money from the Chinese, Europe, Japan and parts of the Middle East. Because we can't pay them back due to our own domestic shortfall of $$$$, they aren't likely to help us fund any AMERICAN projects any time soon. i think the only thing they would be interested in is taking advantage of our slumped market and either buy up projects or build new ones for THEIR companies and THEIR purposes. m. What do you all think? Am i off base?
  16. i like it a lot. At first i thought it was dullsville, but the more it comes together, i like the contrast of its stone facade with the surrounding glass and steel scrapers. i especially am excited and curious about how it will blend with future scrapers in that area over the next decade or so. Is it just me or does this scraper look like it is from Atlanta? It just seems to have that deep south look to it; which is sort of cool, because H-town always seems to walk across the "am i south, am i south-west, am i ....what am i?" tightrope. What i find interesting is that in a couple of years, with the other highrises popping up around it, this building is going to "seem" to be built at a much earlier time period, IMHO. m.
  17. ^^^^ All great news, but with this topsy turvy economy right now, will those projects be delayed or even scrapped? m.
  18. Any updated pix.? Concordia University TX was keeping up with all the demolition and construction and move to the new campus, but since theyv'e moved....NADA. They have many pix. of the new campus and such, but virtually nothing about how the old property looks. i understand this is probably par for the course, BUT, does anyone have any updated pix. of the East Avenue project. i check out their website often. m.
  19. ^^^agree 100%. Yes, i like seeing the finished product, but i enjoy the construction phase just as much. In my temporary neck of the woods (North Hollywood, CA) they just put up a crane for yet another highrise. i watched them move it in during the early AM hours and watched as they assembled it the rest of the day. Pure joy. i can't wait to visit Houston this Thankgiving. How many floors do you think MainPlace will have by then? (provided all goes as planned) We should start a non monetary betting system on this forum regarding the floor count at certain times the next couple of years. What do you all think? m.
  20. ^^^ A Super Target paid for with insurance money. As long as no one was killed or hurt, that actually bodes well for the Target Empire, doesn't it? m.
  21. ^^^ It seems the architecture/developer gods have spoken. Full speed ahead. m.
  22. How delayed do you all think this and MainPlace will be due to the flooding? m.
  23. ^^^Storm chasers get the same rush. i have to admit for my family, we all group at the northernmost point (the Woodlands) at one of my sister's large homes, grill the day before, grab candles and lanterns and tons of board and card games and have a good ole' time. Now, of course, i am sure this is not the case for those who actually lose their homes and such. So, in a way, i sort of understand where he is coming from. m.
  24. ^^^ Agree completely. i constantly transplant trees for friends and family (typical Virgo, i like to roll around in the dirt). i usually get them from around the Woodlands area and bring them into town. Anyway, a few years back, when my sister bought a new home, instead of having to buy new trees, i just went to our family land and dug up some 1-2 year olds and brought them back to Bear Creek. They did splendidly. BUT, there was a big storm about a year later and one of the oaks which was flourishing blew over. i thought, "oh, just straighten it up and it will be fine" For five years i had to nurse and baby the tree along while the others were growing like wildfire. Needless to say, i ended up pulling it up and putting a Crepe Mertyle in its place. i certainly don't want Disco Green, our new signature DT park, to have scraggly looking trees. Spend the money now for a much better look later. m.
