  1. Alfie's was actually very delicious! I can just mentally picture the neat little basket of fish & chips now! (forget about the Slimfast right).

and Steak & Egg was also a very great place to have a nice fresh steaming breakfast and good coffee! We had one for years at intersection of 45 & Telephone Road right next to the huge Coca-Cola neon billboard sign. Was our teen hangout for a good while. It finally closed around earky 80's?

Although Taco Bell is still here, how many remember when the Taco Bell's all had that big FIRE pit flame as you walked in the front? I had to light that blasted thing on ocassion while working there!

In 76 that silly jingle/slogan was "Come to Taco, taco, taco , taco, Taco Bell".

I remember that! One of the first Taco Bells I can remember had that fire pit and was over on Bellaire near the Broiler Burger...

  2. I worked at the one on 1960 by Champions, mid 70's. Just remember that you knew you were going to get fired when the manager told you to clean the walkin freezer

Heh! I put down plenty of pitchers of beer at that one! I used to go to that one when I was in High School on weekends with friends...pizza, beer, movies...bowling...those were the days.

  3. Do you have an insider connection with the new owners of the site? Is the new owner not planning something? And if not, then what evidence do you have that the City and the owner have not already talked about development?

Even if City involvement were desirable and necessary, do you really suspect that they'd make a big publicity event out of a back-room deal with a single land owner?

Impatience is a poor excuse for ill-informed bellyaching.

    Oh blah-blah-blah!

1.) Why are you flaming me over this? and 2.) Where is your almighty "evidence" that anything is being done to develop the site?

So far, anything I've offered up on this topic is about as substantial as what you have...which is to say: nothing.

    Pffft!

  4. where is it?

    Follow the link...

They show those old intermission clips during the intermission... B)

The purist in me would like to say that the City of Houston shouldn't show favoritism by promoting one tract of land over all others, I know that's not realistic or even a good idea (e.g., see BallparkatUnionStationEnronFieldAstrosFieldMinuteMaidPark, Discovery Green, or the proposed Dynamo Stadium.) Some tracts should be promoted for development over others.

So, I do have to agree with you that in some ways, the City of Houston could do more to promote development of the Astroworld tract. It's in a very good location, very visible. But it's not real high on the priority list right now compared to some other things.

I would bet that you'll hear something on the Astroworld tract once a plan is firmed up with the potential Astrodome convention center/hotel.

At this time, I can't comment on that. Anything you are hearing at this point in time is just rumor. ;)

Yeah, definitely the Astrodome is higher priority...and rightfully so. :)

  5. Just curious, exactly who do you consider to be at fault here? Or is it just the fault of the Houston area in general?

It's everybody's fault! Nah, mostly it's Six Flags' fault for closing my beloved Astroworld!

Bastards. Now all we have is a boring and vacant lot!

    :angry2::wacko:

Anyway, it's Houston's fault for not promoting development of the property...and no, putting an Earl Sheibs or a car dealership or apartment complex there ain't gonna cut it! We need something fun and exciting.

At the very least they could put a SUPER Original Timmy Chans there! Bee-otches!

So, that's what I say. So let it be written, so let it be done!

  6. What tha hell???

Six Flags went and tore down Astroworld and this property has been just sitting vacant ever since!

    Typical Houston lame-o planning.

I love the idea. Unfortunately, in todays society Drive Ins would not work without hardcore security. Too bad/sad that the bad apples outnumber the good in these cases. That was one of the main reasons AW was closed. Too many reports of trouble in paradise.

    Say WHAT?

*ahem* The Show-Boat Drive in has been operating out near Tomball for a while now and to my knowledge they have not had any problems with regard to security.

I've driven across town to see films there and I HIGHLY recommend it!

  7. I remember KiTiRiK...I was never on it, but I remember it. Probably one of my earliest TV memories.

I also remember when KTRK showed Jack LaLane and Casper cartoons in the morning...and Cadet Don! Anybody remember him?

Damn that was a lonnnnng time ago, huh?

  8. I used to go to some record conventions there during the early 90's...

I know what you mean about feeling sad over bare plots of land like that. That's exactly the way I feel when I pass the place where Astroworld used to be. Seeing the crossbridge that goes over 610 S to where it was (the only "piece of Astroworld" still left) still standing really adds to the melancholy....

  9. Hello all, I stumbled across this fourum by searching for "Chuc Wagun".

Richard Warren was my uncle. He was one of the co-owners of the place along with my dad Ken Whetzel, and his friend, Tony.

My dad built the building on the Bissonett location. My grandfather, Marshal Warren, ran the location with the old Wagon top on OST. My mom worked there while she was going to school.

I spent much time there in my teens working jobs around there and making onion rings, which we made fresh each day by hand. Luckly, we had an automatic, "manual" onion slicer that made part of that process a lot quicker. Intresting to hear of so many people that remember the old places. :)

You or someone in your family should bring back "The Wagon"...Princes' made a comeback, why not Chuc Wagon? :)

  10. To me, Mexican restaurants are becoming so much like pizza places: so numerous, so many chains, that the food is no longer good and unique.

    That's true.

I prefer the "hole in the wall places" or smaller local chains. I recommend Manuels...up on FM1960 and El Imperial on 1960 is still good too.

  11. Nude swimming for boys was in effect when I went to Albert Sydney Johnston Jr High around 65-66. It was very awkward, I didnt like it. The rumor was that girls did not swim nude, but I dont know the fact. Boys definately did.

That's so sexist! Only the guys had to swim nekkid?! What's up with that?

Was it nekkid basketball and nekkid volleyball too?
