I worked at the one on 1960 by Champions, mid 70's. Just remember that you knew you were going to get fired when the manager told you to clean the walkin freezer
Heh! I put down plenty of pitchers of beer at that one! I used to go to that one when I was in High School on weekends with friends...pizza, beer, movies...bowling...those were the days.

I haven't made a claim that anything is or is not happening here. I'm only disputing the claim that you've made on account of that you're drawing conclusions contingent upon you knowing something that you apparently don't.
Who appointed you arbiter of what one knows and doesn't?
Be gone, troll!

Do you have an insider connection with the new owners of the site? Is the new owner not planning something? And if not, then what evidence do you have that the City and the owner have not already talked about development?
Even if City involvement were desirable and necessary, do you really suspect that they'd make a big publicity event out of a back-room deal with a single land owner?
Impatience is a poor excuse for ill-informed bellyaching.
Oh blah-blah-blah!
1.) Why are you flaming me over this? and 2.) Where is your almighty "evidence" that anything is being done to develop the site?
So far, anything I've offered up on this topic is about as substantial as what you have...which is to say: nothing.
Pffft!

where is it?
Follow the link...

They show those old intermission clips during the intermission...
The purist in me would like to say that the City of Houston shouldn't show favoritism by promoting one tract of land over all others, I know that's not realistic or even a good idea (e.g., see BallparkatUnionStationEnronFieldAstrosFieldMinuteMaidPark, Discovery Green, or the proposed Dynamo Stadium.) Some tracts should be promoted for development over others. So, I do have to agree with you that in some ways, the City of Houston could do more to promote development of the Astroworld tract. It's in a very good location, very visible. But it's not real high on the priority list right now compared to some other things.
I would bet that you'll hear something on the Astroworld tract once a plan is firmed up with the potential Astrodome convention center/hotel.
At this time, I can't comment on that. Anything you are hearing at this point in time is just rumor.
Yeah, definitely the Astrodome is higher priority...and rightfully so.

Don't you know, it's the bad synergy Houston puts off. It's inherent
Dat's right! Damned straight, bee-otch! LOL!!!!

Just curious, exactly who do you consider to be at fault here? Or is it just the fault of the Houston area in general?
It's everybody's fault! Nah, mostly it's Six Flags' fault for closing my beloved Astroworld!
Bastards. Now all we have is a boring and vacant lot!
Anyway, it's Houston's fault for not promoting development of the property...and no, putting an Earl Sheibs or a car dealership or apartment complex there ain't gonna cut it! We need something fun and exciting.
At the very least they could put a SUPER Original Timmy Chans there! Bee-otches!
So, that's what I say. So let it be written, so let it be done!

It's a taqueria now:

Considering its location it might as well be!
Ay-yi-yi!!!!

What tha hell???
Six Flags went and tore down Astroworld and this property has been just sitting vacant ever since!
Typical Houston lame-o planning.
I love the idea. Unfortunately, in todays society Drive Ins would not work without hardcore security. Too bad/sad that the bad apples outnumber the good in these cases. That was one of the main reasons AW was closed. Too many reports of trouble in paradise.Say WHAT?
*ahem* The Show-Boat Drive in has been operating out near Tomball for a while now and to my knowledge they have not had any problems with regard to security.
I've driven across town to see films there and I HIGHLY recommend it!

I know for a fact my family has pics from there, but they are on slides. I could get them and scan them in...
Hmm...that gives me some ideas!

I especially LOVE the PASTA SECTION!!!
MAN, Randall's has the greatest selection of PASTA in the city!!! GREAT STUFF!!!! MMMMMM!!!!!
However, I've had trouble finding the NOSE HAIR CLIPPERS in there! I think they should make finding the NOSE HAIR CLIPPERS a piece of cake.
-
Randall's prices have always been ridiculous. I think they are only doing well in areas where there isn't an HEB or WalMart around...so, that leaves them with few locations.
I do agree the stores are nice and the meat and produce sections have always been top-notch.

I remember KiTiRiK...I was never on it, but I remember it. Probably one of my earliest TV memories.
I also remember when KTRK showed Jack LaLane and Casper cartoons in the morning...and Cadet Don! Anybody remember him?
Damn that was a lonnnnng time ago, huh?

It's a great paper if you like Pravda.
I've shifted towards getting my news on the internet. I find it much more substantial, relevent, and factual.

I used to go to some record conventions there during the early 90's...
I know what you mean about feeling sad over bare plots of land like that. That's exactly the way I feel when I pass the place where Astroworld used to be. Seeing the crossbridge that goes over 610 S to where it was (the only "piece of Astroworld" still left) still standing really adds to the melancholy....

Hello all, I stumbled across this fourum by searching for "Chuc Wagun".
Richard Warren was my uncle. He was one of the co-owners of the place along with my dad Ken Whetzel, and his friend, Tony.
My dad built the building on the Bissonett location. My grandfather, Marshal Warren, ran the location with the old Wagon top on OST. My mom worked there while she was going to school.
I spent much time there in my teens working jobs around there and making onion rings, which we made fresh each day by hand. Luckly, we had an automatic, "manual" onion slicer that made part of that process a lot quicker. Intresting to hear of so many people that remember the old places.
You or someone in your family should bring back "The Wagon"...Princes' made a comeback, why not Chuc Wagon?

I found 2808 Hadley in 1951 - must have been one page down from the map posted above.

Good grief!
A thing of beauty...especially the sanctuary!

A Lake? Are you sure it wasn't Braes Bayou?
I'll bet it was the ship channel! >

Here's Valian, across from the Shamrock.
That particular Valian's looks like the building that was also the home of Sivil's Drive In and also one other drive-in that I am forgetting at the moment.... is that right?
I don't remember it looking like that...Either the S. Main location or the Shepherd one...

This morning on NPR they were discussing how the Battleship Texas needs drastic restoration. This is another reason for charging to go in to the area. Will cost millions and the ship's hull is deteriorating even faster than thought. Need $$
A DOLLAR???!!!!
Why those greedy bastards!
I'll never go there again!

I used to go to the Northwest mall location as a kid. I still remember the pink brown and white stripes decor and an icecream barge called the "Pig Trough" or something like that ?
The NW mall location was the one I went to as a kid...parties and such...
Those were the days!
Wasn't there another place kind of like it called Swenson's?
-
I would think that would be kinda confusing, don't you?
... too many ... balls.
BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!! Tru, dat!

To me, Mexican restaurants are becoming so much like pizza places: so numerous, so many chains, that the food is no longer good and unique.
That's true.
I prefer the "hole in the wall places" or smaller local chains. I recommend Manuels...up on FM1960 and El Imperial on 1960 is still good too.

Nude swimming for boys was in effect when I went to Albert Sydney Johnston Jr High around 65-66. It was very awkward, I didnt like it. The rumor was that girls did not swim nude, but I dont know the fact. Boys definately did.
That's so sexist! Only the guys had to swim nekkid?! What's up with that?
Was it nekkid basketball and nekkid volleyball too?

I remember that! One of the first Taco Bells I can remember had that fire pit and was over on Bellaire near the Broiler Burger...
