  1. TS Allison showed us another reason not to connect every building underground: flooding. UH already has a massive system of underground tunnels connecting all the buildings, all for utilities and heating/cooling, I believe.

Unfortunately, those tunnels led to massive flooding on campus during TS Allison...although water didn't completely inundate the campus, 90 out of 105 buildings on campus flooded due to the tunnels that interconnected all the buildings.

I believe UH undertook a big floodproofing project shortly after TS Allison, like that of the Texas Medical Center, which suffered similar problems.

I don't think you'll see any pedestrian tunnels at UH anytime soon. They just wouldn't make sense...look at the pattern of sidewalks on campus. They go everywhere. There are so many different destinations that you couldn't build a tunnel to go to and from everywhere people wanted to go.

As far as the elements go, I just always packed an umbrella...otherwise you run in the rain. One good thing about the size of the UH campus is that kept me in good shape. I figure I walked an average of 5 miles a day crossing the campus back in the day. I'd park over by the Quad or at Cambridge Oaks, where I could hang out with friends in the dorms, then walk over to the engineering buildings, then back to the dorms between classes, then back to the engineering buildings, and repeat this several times every day. And of course, the walks were always at a brisk pace due to my habit of running late... ;)

the tunnel flooding issue is very true. when it rains alot another place that is known for flooding is in front of the college of architecture building. everytime it would flood we would build boats and try to float on them, LOL

i'm a u of h grad and well u of h isn't anything compared to rice. that's like comparing oranges to apples, lol. u of h students would go to the rice campus to look at their architecture and how the planning of pedestrian traffic was layed out for learning purposes.

u of h has a large amount of students and are always looking for ways to promote themselves to attract even more students, and i wouldn't be surprised when they meet that goal of 45k students.

  2. I've noticed that people by the Uptown Park area seem to think (for whatever reason) that the Galleria is a million miles away and seem to have a different attitude, but I never thought about it until I read the last few posts.

Could it be that the residents there are "complete" in their needs in that area, while "The Galleria" is filled with undesirables and tourists (in their eyes)?

the few ppl that i know that live in the montebello don't mind the galleria, although they do favor uptown park 1&2. the reason they don't shop at the galleria is because they are wealthy enough to get the real stuff during their "travels" through France, Germany, etc and just buy the stuff there or have it shipped. it's crazy what they'll have shipped to their house.

  3. I also thought about going into one of the condo buildings right by Uptown Park but did not know how to go about doing so. I wanted to see how the condos looked inside and everything else. I wonder do they have a model condo for viewing?

    I think it was Montebello.

lol, i don't even know if this person is still on this board, but for others that are interested. one can't just go into the montebello. u have to have clearance, security clearance that is.

montebello is very protective of their residence which is due to the price the residents pay there. just call the office up there tell them ur interested in looking and they will be able to work something out with you.

however, if u just want to go and look as in tour wise and not to buy, then more than likely they may just let u see the driveway and lobby, LOL.

i worked on several units in there so i know the entrance security and the guy at the desk so i would just wave hello at them and they would let me in w/o question, but once i took several ppl to see one of the units i was working on and we went in several cars, the other guys got there first and boy do the security give them a hassle search.gif they even started writing down her licence plate number, LOL

but for any of u with some cash montebello is VERY NICE!! i wish i could afford to live there frown.gif

  4. I know a guy who lives in Sugarland and always rants about how his apartment there is way bigger than what he would have had in Houston for the same price, and how much he loves that (despite the long commute and horrible traffic on the 59). To each his own I guess.

that's exactly how i am, LOL the apt. i had was 880 sq. ft. if i were to buy that around here the price would be in the 1k's. plus i dont mind the commute i'm in love with my car so i enjoy getting in it and driving, lol drive.gif

  5. so has anyone gone to visit this hotel?

it's ok. there is no kitchen in this hotel as it's kind of expected for you to order from nearby venues in uptown park, but they have a relationship with them so if u want to order something they can bring it for you, which i think is pretty cool B)

the units are spacious, and the closets are HUGE, lol. which would make sence since it is a hotel. however, i don't really like the millwork that is being used. fixtures are decent also. the 'kitchen' area has a sink and microwave, that's laid out nicely. if u get one of the inner rooms facing inward to the unit u can see the pool, which is pretty big! the millwork and columns are all faux. i wasn't all impressed, but it's not bad either :) maybe later on they'll do some sort of covered parking???????

  6. Are you talking about on Travis? That's now Havana Nights and has been for a while. I don't really go there.

Or are you talking about Bossa-the Cuban restaurant on Main and Texas? That place is also one of the only survivors. I had dinner there a few months ago and my fish and my date's were seriously bland, especially for $28. But they have good atmosphere.

i don't even remember where it was located, lol. i think b4 it was named bongos it was a lady's name that started with an 'L'. anyway that place was cool, it always had a band playing called mango punch.

ahhhh yes, good times..good times, lol.

  7. We drove by the RO Shopping Center yesterday - along the wing where the Black-Eyed Pea is located, every business has already moved out except for the Pea and Jamba Juice. The Black-Eyed Pea has a letter posted next to their front door thanking customers for the past 30 years and listing the date for their imminent closure (can't remember the date, but it's very soon). Wonder if Weingarten's going to roll the bulldozers in the middle of the night as soon as they pull a demo permit?

lol, probably. but the good news for u jamba juice fans is that jamba juice will be coming back to that location in the new building.

regarding river oaks theatre, granted that was in Weingarten's plan to demo, but i HIGLY doubt that's going to happen. especially now. if i'm not mistaken i think a bill was passed that before demoing historiic buildings proposals will have to go b4 a committe and well we all know a committee will not approve such a thing. this is y the project is no longer called phase 1, phase 2.

  8. I went downtown last week to take my friend out for drinks for his birthday.

It's sad and depressed down there now.

    what a friend

    LOL, j/k :)

y doesn't anyone go to sambucca's?? i haven't been in that area of downtown in a while so i don't even know if it's still there, but that place was still decent when i last went.

  9. who really cares....i'll have to agree w/ the person that posted that this isn't a problem.

clubs suck and i can say this since i always went clubbin throught college and even early in my career, and no i didn't go to bars i went to CLUBS and all kinds ranging from hip hop, country, tejano, dance/house to salsa, and just to show my range of places i've been i even made the mistake of going to the Roxy

what happens is. a new club opens everyone goes to it for a while as it's the new hot spot. since it's new it's nice, clean, not too ghetto, then after time the club literally turns ghetto!! closes down and a new one pops up. who cares, downtown will keep doing this turnover club routine.........

  10. actually curious about the "miami" floorplan wrt to cost

    ty

not sure if anyone really knows cost. i personally worked on some of the floor plans at my old job and know that they were starting off at around 300/sq ft. you might want to go to the sales trailor, it's on post oak. or give them a call here is the website that contains the contact info.

    edit:

haha my bad i said 300/sq ft. dont know what i was thinking...300k :)

  11. Sources, baby! Let's go! B)

LOL, well the source that told me this said that from what he knows it is going to be approved to become a hotel. he said it still has some stuff to go through or what not, but he was pretty confident it saying it would happen. i don't know all the politics of this, but he does especially with his line of work. plus he's been proven reliable in other things he's shared with me. anyway, since this was verbally told to me i did a quick search myself online to see what i could find and this is what i came across. hope i can paste this correctly...

Senate OKs public funding to overhaul Astrodome

    Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle

The state Senate has approved a measure that could provide millions of dollars in public financing if private developers pull off an overhaul of the Reliant Astrodome into a destination hotel.

Sen. Kyle Janek, R-Houston, amended a House bill to qualify the project for hotel and sales tax rebates of up to $150 million over 10 years. It passed the Senate late Wednesday and goes to the House, where members must concur with the change.

The legislation comes just in time for Astrodome Redevelopment Corp., the private entity seeking to transform the dome, which is counting on the future rebates to help it secure financing for the $450 million project.

The Harris County Sports & Convention Corp., which manages the county-owned Reliant Park, set a June 1 deadline for Astrodome Redevelopment to prove it has lined up financing.

  12. I say we make a human Haif chain around the place. That should work!

 only if i get my 5 sec. worth of fame, lol

attempting to get a demolishion permit sounds like they want to move forward.

oh no, they are going to move forward, i just meant the design itself was on hold cuz the design itself of the tenant's space didn't pass, which is a good thing cuz it was pretty ugly...
