  1. Driving in to town on the Gulf Frwy today around 1:00 I was puzzled why no cars were on the south side of the freeway heading toward Galveston. The traffic had come to a sudden stop on the Pierce elevated at downtown. Within seconds coming over the bridge was the Presidential motorcade. It was an awesome site! We might not agree with the person in the office, but the site of that grand motorcade drives home the fact that the person in that office holds the key to the survival of not just this nation, but the entire world!

  2. The area of Third Ward bound by 288 to the west, Cullen to the east, Holman to the south and 45 to the north seems to be slowly coming back to life. I took a drive through the area on Sunday, along streets I had not dared travel down for a long time. I was surprised to see how much the area is coming back alive with new single family homes, town homes, condos and renovated older homes. Still plagued with a few streets of "corner people". I get the feeling that within the next 1 to 2 years that all those vacant lots will be filled with new homes of varying types. The racial mix is also changing in the area, Black , Hispanic and White and only a few of those "Third Ward is my home" signs unlike the area south of Holman. Do anyone else share my opion of this area?

  3. Several people I spoke too concerning prison time for Oscar Wyatt was glad to see him go. They were mad because he didn't write a check to save the Sakowitz Stores despite the fact his wife Lynn Sakowitz Wyatt spends millions on fashion and jewelry. Was the feud between her and baby brother Robert true? Is this the reason the stores went under?

  4. I have notice that two mega mansions have stayed on the sales block for a very long time with no buyers in sights. The first is a very old very creeping looking mansion in Galveston over 100 years old with more than 15,000 sq ft and an asking price of $1.7mill. I first saw this for sale nearly 4 years ago!, the other a not completed super mansion in Rivercrest over 23,000 sq ft asking price $4.7 mill. Do any one have any

info or history on this two white elephants

Edit: Galveston Orphans Home At 1315 21st Street is now The Bryan Museum.

  5. I visited this store for the first time today, it is very nice inside and out. While checking out I asked the clerk if the store would be 24 hours one day. The answer was "There's too much action in this area for 24 hours" The clerk say just take a drive down Main to McGowan and come back up Fannin and you will see why. What a shocker! Lots of homeless people and several "working boys" exposing themselves openly to cars on both Main and Fannin why hasn't HPD cleaned this area up. It is wide open!

  6. I don't think the Resistance to newcomers in Riverside Terrace is based on race, even after white flight this area never became a totally African American neighborhood. There are still many white families that never left the area and no problems between the two groups exist. This area is now a mix of White, Black, Hispanic and Asian . My next door neighbors are white, they built their home in the 1940's, across the street an interracial couple are renovating an old Georgian Home from the 1940's. In an older neighborhood, the oldsters need time to get use to the new comers, if you think you can come in to the "hood" and get instant love think again. We are African American and it has taken nearly a year to get to know many of our neighbors because we are the new people on the block. Once you get to know each other life will be sweet, don't let race stop you from living your dream

  7. The area of Riverside Terrace along S. Macgregor is deed restricted to single family only. Some of the many sections that make up Riverside Terrace have not maintained their restrictions and town homes and condos are going up. The political climate is very hostile to the new development. As a resident of the area our civic club meetings heat up each month at the mention of whats being built in the area.

  8. Riverside Terrace/S. Macgregor section would be a better bet than Eastwood.

Just remember not to go over board in your renovation. A case in point is the home I attached to this tread. The new owner more than doubled the size of the old home, and even try (unsuccessfully) to turn a 1950's ranch into a new style contemporary. This home has lingered on the market for months without a taker.

  9. My neighbor asked me a question I could not answer.

With the rise of foreclosed homes in the Houston area , how would someone start a business to bid on cleaning those homes left trashed when the previous owners leave.

I checked with several friends in cleaning business, but none had every engaged in this form of cleaning before. I know someone here has the answer(s)

  10. The area of 3RD ward near Scott and 45 seems to be heating up.

Across from Dotson Elem an entire neighborhood seems to have been emptied and boarded up.

There is a nice recently built home on Napoleon near Mcgowen sitting on a treed double lot off 45. More new homes can be found on nearly every street in the area. Homes and buildings along Mcgowen are being torned down or remodeled and put up for sale all the way from Scott up to Dowling. Is this the new boon area for the new near town crowd?

  11. This Park for decades was the only Park open to African Americans in Houston. It was bought by free slaves as a meeting place for the cities blacks. The area along Dowling near the Park was at one time the most fashionable Black entertainment district in Houston. The Art Deco Bldg on corner from Park is the Old El Dorado Ballroom where entertainers such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald would come to entertain in the 1930's until the late 1950's. The area west of the park heading toward the 288 Freeway was at one time the wealthiest Black neighborhood in Houston. The end of segregation in the 50's and 60's lead to the demolishing of dozens of stately mansions along Bastrop, Dowling and Live Oak St. You can still find a couple of these mansions barely standing. There are several African American Historical groups that have pictures showing the park in it's hey day. Including the huge Juneteenth parades that used to go down Dowling St.

  12. The Weingarten name seems to be entangled with a lot of scandal in recent years.

They own the company that wants to tear down River Oaks And Alabama Theaters.

Son in law who help developer Greenway Plaza went to prison for bank fraud, Grand daughter went to jail for Enron fraud. Nothing like greed among the super rich!

  13. Someone on a recent tread mentioned the name Candace Mossler. I vaguely remembered the name from when I was a little kid. I did a goggle search and all kinds of things popped up. This was one notorious Houstonian back in the 1960"s. Do any one know where that old mansion in River Oaks is located where she and her boy friend plotted her rich old husband's murder.
