  1. What about all those people living in terrible conditions? Has the city not failed them? Gentrification? Tearing down valued homes and businesses to replace them with crap. You call that decision making by a great city? Truth is, this city has made some very bad choices that have disadvantaged many. Change is good in our case, and it won't just attract the "elite", but also the general nation. I fail to see how these changes would affect the way you choose to live. A better image can mean a better outlook for a city.
  2. While you make very good points, that doesn't excuse Houston from its mistakes. And while you are comfortable with the city as is, many of us want to see and have better things without feeling forced to leave. Thank God that life here is so great, or I'd be persuaded to move somewhere else. I wouldn't know, seeing as how I'm in Houston.
  3. When I sit and think about it, I start to realize that even as great as Houston is already, it doesn't seem to be taking enough steps at a time to become even greater. When are we going to up and build our own "Victory Park"? (the Pavilions doesn't count). When are we going to stop tearing down historic places? If developers keep doing this, Houston will eventually be a city that doesn't have a single structure that outdates the year 1970. The city will be a brand new, sparkling hell hole. And when will the architecture get better? It almost feels as if our city leaders really do not care about Houston's image, and are being extremely lazy and cheap in this town's growth.
  4. I think the problem is that we don't have a major icon that's commonly known outside the state of Texas. And that's a real problem for Houston to be as big as it is. It was the Astrodome, but it no longer stands alone in design. This is why we need a building that beats every building in the world for height. And then we can just stuff a whole bunch of businesses into that one building, lol. No, but I just feel that if Houston would go up more, it wouldn't have to go out so much.
  5. True, but look at the contrast of the Williams Tower to the rest of uptown Houston. Look at the way the Twin Towers imposed over lower Manhattan, and the way the Freedom Tower will look. The design I would have in mind would absolutely not be hideous, though. And if possibly there was another building a few hundred feet shorter, it wouldn't seem so exaggerated. It's obviously not necessary now, but as the years go on and there's a surge in the economy, ideas like these are what we need to make Houston stand out.
  6. Call me crazy and say I'm out of my mind, but I would love for Houston to have the tallest building in the world.
