  1. The other day my dad, who works for TXDoT as an inspector, and I were driving on East BW8, near I-10. When we got up to the inter-change, he told me that when they were building the roads in that area, that the state acquired a lot of right-of-way. Pretty much they tore down EVERYTHING in their way, including an old mansion (on the South side of I-10, but North of the toll bridge). He told me about touring the munitions bunkers that are in that area, too (those were mentioned in a previous thread). When I was little (like four years old), he would drive by the work site on the weekends, and take a look around- making sure that barricades were in place, etc. Sometimes he would take me with him. When he started talking about the house, I started to VAGUELY remember seeing a house there. He said that it was two stories and had a large gate around the property.

Does anyone have any information on this house/mansion, or has this been posted in a previous thread?

My father-in-law was a cop in that area in the 50s. I don't know if it is the same place you are talking about but here it goes. He told me about a place they used to keep an eye on. He refered to it as The Kendall Mansion. It used to belong to a madam who died unded mysterious circumstances and was supposed to be haunted. All the rooms were shaped like a diamond and had a series of hidden passages that connected all the rooms. If I remember right it was on street named Lakeside off of Market. He said the madam was found dead under the rear tires of her car and ruled an accident, they said it rolled over her when she got out to open the gate at the entrance. People report seeing red lights on in the house even thought there was no power to the house. I have gone looking for it but have never been able to find it.

  2. I remember Villiage Inn Pizza they were all over town all owned by the same group. I worked and hung out at the one on Beltway 8 and Sabo. The English Brothers played a lot there as did Paul Buskirk, who was somewhat of a legend among musicians. They also had one at the much discussed Westbury Square.

Does anyone remember Subway Pizza. There were two in town. One off Westheimer across the street from what is now Caligula XXI. They had another location but I don't remember where I just remember it was in the 59 Hillcroft area near some rr tracks, the 70s are a big blurr to me.

  3. Wow, Sherwood Cryer wears me out just reading about him.

I have lived in Pasadena for 30 years and my wife has lived here all here life. No one I have ever talked to about him has had anything good to say. I have also heard some bad stuff about the guy that owned the Shamrock Hilton, I believe his name was McCarthy or something like that.

  4. NO! HALT everyone stop the presses!

There was a wooden frame placed about 3 years ago or less not way back when. In other words someone gave the OK to build a hotel or shopping center then just called it off.

Everytime I drove by it seemed to darken with the sun and I wondered why they abandoned the project? It may still be standing dont recall. For some reason they just stopped building. Now I need a Lone Star! >:)

I never noticed it. I will try to drive by on my way home and see it there are any signs left.

  5. Whats really strange is they started building a 2-3 story frame for what looked like a motel or? At least I think it was where Gilley's was. They built a huge frame and then it stood unfinished for about 2 years and I think they tore down?

How or why would someone start something and destroy it? Had to be in a legal dispute or something? Again, I am not positive but it seeemed to be right where Gilley's driveway was as you entered.

Like Olivia and John said ...Someone better "shape up" ...hoo...hoo...hooo...hooo

If you mean the structure to the right of the club it was the rodeo arena, it only had bleachers and a big metal roof.

  6. Thanks, Texianjoe... that sounds right. I do remember not too long ago the battles of trying to go wet but I was thinking that was more So. Houston area for some reason.

There is a finger of S. Houston that goes into Pasadena all the way to Shaver where Fiesta, Racetrack drive thru beer, He's not Here icehouse are. That may be what you were thinking off. They were not to happy about the new law, they were making a killing being on the border.

  7. Pasadena is no longer wet/dry. They did away with the dry section(Old Pasadena) last year. You can now buy alcohol any where in town. The dry section was bordered on the north by 225, south by Spencer, west by Allen Genoa and east by Preston.

By the way the previous comment came from a local comedian named Gary Bun Richardson who used to play at the Comedy Workshop Annex all the time.

  8. The public amazes me how far they will go. Ebay is probably selling the fold up chairs all the mourners sat on while the services went on.

There is a museum in Florida I think, that displays the ambulance that carried away Lee Harvey Oswald. They also have Jayne Mansfield death car.

If anyone goes to Kellys Country Cooking on I45 and Park Place look at all the photos on the walls, there is a lot of history there. The place is or was owned by a retired HPD and there are pictures of Kennedy and a couple of other presidents shaking hands with their HPD escorts.

  9. Wasn't there also a Levitz Furniture store somewhere in that vicinity? Tell me if my memory serves me correctly on that one.

Yes Levits' Furniture is now Trading Fair II just east of MLK. And right across the street was Ole Bare and his Superior Waterbeds warehouse store. I wonder what happened to him. I guess waterbeds are no longer chic.

  10. I also remember us going skating at a roller rink (1962-64) that I think was on IH-610 west of Gulfgate Shopping Center/Mall. Was there such a place in that vicinity? Or in this case, has my memory failed me?

    Chet Cuccia

I remember it well. I spent many a Friday and Saturday nights there. Also at the Skate Ranch of Monroe, I think, on one of those streets that cut back to the I45 feeder. The building for Gulfgate is still there just west of Telephone. There is a sign that says Savon Furniture, but I think it is abandoned. You can see the entrance on the southeast corner that once had an awning.

  11. "If you happen to see me,

You can't help but hear me,

    Driving in my car.

    Cause for miles around,

    You can hear the sound,

    Of that lovin steel guitar.

    I'm always singin,

    And KNUZ is wailin,

Loud enough to wake the dead.

KNUZ country, thats where my head is at. K N U Z"

"I got a special built rig,

    With speakers so big,

They rattle the house next door.

    I turn KNUZ on,

    to a country song,

And just listen to them roar.

    I can't remember the rest"

I don't know why I remember that 30 years later and can't remember to take out the garbage.

  12. I worked at the Globe on Woodridge in 1974 for one summer. The tire store next door was Fisk, had a little boy in pajamas and holding a candle with the slogan "Time to retire.".

The only Globe left after the late 70s was one in McAllen Texas. It was closed about 5 years ago. It made so much money from people coming across the border to shop they kept it open.

I remember Sage because it was the only non grocery store open on Sundays. They would block off sections of items you couldn't buy because of the Blue Laws.

  13. Was it in the little green and yellow house up near Poplar St?

It was the Park Place Grill for a fair number of years (i think they closed in '02??)

They had really good burgers too.

Cute little place. Always packed at lunch.

Before it was the Park Place Grill it was the Burgerhaus for a long time. They had the best burgers. It shut down reopened as the Park Place Grill but it was never the same.

  14. Christie's closed? Really sorry to hear that. Was the best place to fine non-painfully hot fried seafood back in the day. My ex and I went every time one of use was paid. They made the best seafood gumbo. They'd pour it in a cup and must have dropped a raw oyster into the hot liquid right before it was served cause it was perfectly cooked by the time it got to us. Never overcooked, which is a horrible thing to do to a creature that died so we could eat it.

The sad thing is that now I'm back in La. after 20 years in Houston, there's still no place in the town I live in to get great fried seafood and won't burn you down. I have a very tender tongue and if I ever met Paul Prudhomme (reported to have started this hot-sauce-on-anything-makes-it-Cajum fad) I'd kill him.

Christie's on the southside closed. The Christie's on Westheimer is still open.

  15. i have been meaning to go to the monument inn - when did the san jacinto inn close?

it's funny how on the menu, under "lighter fare," there's a picture of a cheeseburger :D

I don't remember exactly but its been quit a few years. The old Monument Inn was next to the battleship, it burnt down. The new Monument in is next to the ferry landing where the old San Jacinto Inn used to be. There are tables next to a row of windows that face the channel, its a fun view. They take a beating when I go on the raw oysters alone.

  16. No unfortunatly the San Jacinto Inn is long gone. It was located right next to the Battleship Texas across the road from the San Jacinto monument. They were a family style resturant that brought out plates of food as you requested them and would keep bringing it till you were full. They had fried shrimp, fried oysters, fried chicken, the best biscuits in the world and most of the time straberry shortcake for dessert. It was one price for the meal and as I said you ate till you were full. My family loved that place and were sad to see it close.

The San Jacinto Inn is gone but the Monument Inn has the same all you can eat deal. Look about half way down the menu.

  17. Yep, Albert Gee owned the Poly-Asian and sold it to a Mr Chin. There's some discussion about it in the '50s Medcenter topic. Gee also owned another restaurant called Ding How that was on Main north of Holcombe. Oddly enough, there is an Albert Gee restaurant knick-knack in the display case at Hunan Village on Shepherd, so I think that might be connected with his family.

That is the sight of another long gone restaurant Alfies Fish and Chips.

  18. I went to a restaurant in Kemah in 1969, but I don't remember the name. It might have had the word captain or club in the name, but I just can't think of it. Does anyone know?

Could it have been Captain Wicks. It is a buffet type seafood place and is still in operation on the Seabrook side of the channel.
