  1. Something does not add up here with the proposed height of this building...

If its at 30 stories now - its the shortest 30 I have ever seen...you can hardly see the building on 59, and it looks way shorter than DT which is topped out at 30?

And if MP is going to 46 stories - only another 16 - how is it going to get high enough where it is supposed to be way taller than Discovery Tower??

Basically MP does not look that tall now, and if its 30/46 stories done, then its not going to look that tall when its done...

Unless the last 16 stories are going to be really high ceilings or something?????

  2. Well its a soccer-specific stadium in the US, and with these types of stadiums quality isn't as much as a priority...

although newer MLS stadiums are reversing this trend....

    besides its a nice,subtle design....

At this stage its more of a question of just lets get this thing built and keep the team here in Houston where they belong; sadly any other considerations are now secondary. So if this means that we have to compromise on aesthetics etc then so be it.

    Go Dynamo!

  3. About a year and a half back I was lucky enough to experience the view from one of the penthouses at night. This was before the unit was built out, so there weren't any light fixtures (at all!) to create reflections on the interior side of the floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall. I stood right up close to it, enveloped by darkness, and experienced a sensation of hovering in thin air without feeling unsafe or in any way fearful of wind or gravity. And as rush hour traffic began to die down, the opposing rivers of light began to flow freely beneath me on 288. And the refineries in the distance were visible and were flaring something undoubtedly very toxic, yet breathtaking to behold. It was as though the city was alive, and as though I could observe its heart beat, its pulse, and every aspect of its being. I could observe the lit up downtown area as its brain, and the TMC as its liver. I watched this omnipotently, from above.

Wow Niche; you should sell this prose to Moasic to their marketing team!

It is a cool view though, I would love to live there, at least for a while.

  4. "The COH is on the Planning Commissions agenda today for the Amateur Sports Park. This is heavily tied into the Dynamo, right?"

Sorry, can you explain what this is? what amatuer sports park? Is this this youth park / training facility for dynamo or something?

Any links or more info on this? Would love to see it done, a city the size of Houston desperately needs more youth facilities

  5. I think they plan to share parking with Astros? There is hardly ever over lap in games so no big deal.

Plus the crowds are much smaller at 20,000 so should not be a problem.

Lets just get the stadium done, its too important for all sorts of economic / social / prestige to Houston etc reasons to mess around any longer

  6. This Webcam: http://oxblue.com/pro/open/mccarthy/andersoncancercenter I circled it in red for ya.

    UniversityofTexasMDAndersonCance-1.jpg

Thats a better view of the building! I wonder if the lighting will stay, and if it will change colors like the Memorial Hermann Building.

EDIT: Looking at the Webcam I posted, the lighting started coming on at night since May 28th and Blue seems to be the only color.

FWIW No blue lighting tonight on the webcam at 11.40pm, wonder if there is going to be permanent lighting...

  7. In the future....... try reading the WHOLE thread , before you comment. I refer you to post #46 in this thread.

I read your whole thread and I also along with many people here I'm sure totally disagree with what you are saying, and more importantly your somewhat dismissive attitude

Your opinion on people afflicted a mental illness such as depression, alzheimers or schizophrenia is troubling to me. These are the people that end off jumping off buildings. Not people who lost their dogs. I assume from your tone that you have never had the misfortune to share heart breaking experiences such as these with friends or loved ones.

For that anyway, you are blessed.

  8. Geoff, "attacking him for his opinion, and misunderstanding your question" is "wrong on so many levels" ??? Do I even respond to that? I do.not.care.what.anyone.thinks.it.should.be. Hess will not be owning the building, either, so that comment of yours made no sense.

"I'm sure if they were they would certainly remind you not to call your fellow..." - Thank you for projecting an opinion for a moderator, but, again, I could not care less what you think. In case you need it explained to you, I did not call a "fellow Haif'er" an ingnoramus due to his opinion ; I called him an ignoramus because he is not answering the question and is repeating the hackneyed waste of time of throwing out an opinion of the name of a project when that had nothing to do with my question. Stop wasting people's time by giving an extraneous answer that does not answer the question. That's the moral of this story.

Whatever pal. You need to step off. I don't have to answer your question. I posted some thoughts on this thread on the naming of this building and if I want to do that I will, at any time.

Your over the top response to my harmless musings was rude and offensive, but lets just leave it at that as I've better things to do than go back and forth on this.

    Good evening.

  9. May have missed a previous conversation about this, but why has this thread not been renamed "Hess Tower" ?

    Cause that name blows?

Why not just call it Hess Discovery Tower?

1000 times better, and actually a fantastic branding opportunity for Hess IMO.

To associate Hess with theme of "discovery" etc...and to the park itself....good PR / sponsor park events etc...

  10. In the chron last week there was an article that there was going to be a vote in City Hall or wherever on whether to approve this hotel to get the tax incentives that presumably it needed to get started.

Does anyone know what happened with this Council meeting / vote on the proposed hotel last week?

Hopefully there was a positive outcome and this thing will break ground soon?

  11. I noticed they built a box insider where the curved roof is going to go. I guess its most likely air conditioning and stuff like that. I think it's going so slowly because they have to built that sort of stuff before they finish off the top.

It's also supposed to have a spire/antenna of some sort right? That should be pretty cool.

I can see this building from my apartment, although it's partially blocked by some trees, so it's pretty fun watching it go up.

Yes, I think you are right on all counts Jax.

Thanks so much for the awesome pics of this building, they look great. I too live quite nearby and watch the roof every day - maybe that's partly why I think its going slowly!

  12. Probably funny the first time this happend (in the 60's!)

But when you consider that the city has to shut the fountain down, clean it out, and take a city employee at least a full day to make it happen, are you really proud of yoruself for doing this?

How, exactly, is this different than throwing garbage out the window that someone else has to clean up.

    Grow up, for goodness sake.

agreed, pathetic behaviour, worse than grafitti. The fountain is awesome and anyone who messes it up should be arrested.
