My favorite "repurposed" store is the huge Spec's Liquor store in the building formerly occupied by Academy Sports and Outdoors. I stop there when I'm in that area because of the huge supply of everything "spiritual".

That strip center parking lot was a nightmare when Specs was in the small space next door to Academy.   Especially on the weekends.

Anyone ever skate at The Wharf ice rink?

  2. Being surprised by a train on the spur was a real treat back when the plant was operating! There were two creosote plants in Conroe back in the 60 -70s. The location of the one off Second St was a Superfund site for years. I'm not sure if the site on 105E was or not, but the groundwater in the area was supposedly contaminated.

  3. Does anyone else remember the promo stunt KRBE did in the early 1970's - playing "Gary Glitter Rock and Roll part 2" non stop? I think it played continuously for about 4 days (?) with no interruptions. They'd take calls from users trying to guess when it would end. I recorded some of it on cassette which I've still got somewhere.

    And whatever happened to Roger W W W W W W Garrett?

YES - I do remember it! Seems like it was 73 or 74. I believe they used the lame excuse of a tape being stuck and they were waiting for a repair technician otherwise removing it would destroy an expensive machine. Up until this stunt KRBE had been an automated station for a couple years with no live DJ's for the most part. I remember sometimes they would give the time and it was way off. Funny thing was after they got GGR&RP2 "out of the machine" it turned into a live DJ format.

  4. First of all, there is no school district in this area is that is perfect -- they all offer both positive and negative unique issues. I'd have to say that Spring ISD has not done nothing to better the students, nor better the property owners that pay taxes by making DIVERSITY their number one priority and focus.

I know of people that intentionally moved into Spring ISD after reading all about the great things taking place there (puhleeze!) via online, and through biased marketing tools created by the district, and I do feel sorry for them.

We moved out of Spring ISD because of the high schools, and we don't for one second reqret the move. It was good for my kids' education, and it was good for our home value. Our kids grow up so fast, yet it goes by sooo slow when it's in a bad school setting!

You're right on the money. The decline in SISD in the last few years is stunning.

  5. Received my first lesson in concert ticket buying at the Ticketmaster (or whatever it was back in the early 70's) in the Almeda Mall Foleys. The friendly lady behind the counter sold me two tickets for a concert at Hofheinz Pavilion. She said these were very good seats. When I got home, I noticed the "OBSTRUCTED VIEW" stamped across the back of the tickets.

  6. I recently switched from Comcast to AT&T Uverse and so far so good. The Uverse installers were prompt, courteous and knowledgeable.

During the call to cancel Comcast services, I was given dire warnings about Uverse and informed that there are hoards of unsatisfied Uverse users returning to Comcast every day. I said that's funny - I have several neighbors who have it and highly recommend it. She asked why didn't I call them and ask for promo rate. I asked why should I have to resort to that. I thought it was very thoughtful of them to roll a truck all the way to my house just to cap-off the cable feed so I wouldn't inadvertently receive any of stray cable signals...

  7. Yes there was. I went on his show also. A long L O N G time ago.

Thanks...it's a relief to know Captain Bob wasn't just a figment of my childhood imagination. No one I've asked has ever remembered him.

  8. Birthday kids on MaryJane's Magic Castle would get to stick their hands into the hollow tree and pull out as many pennies as they could grab. It wasn't even close to Kitirik in kid entertainment value.

Does anyone remember a kid show on KPRC (I think) from late 50's with a character named Captain Bob?

  9. I found my big brothers Boy Scout handbook the other day and wondered if there was a topic here, if there is go ahead an merge.

My bro was a scout around 1967 and I barely remember going with him and mom to the meetings. We have just a few pics of them in some sort of silly play. My bro would die of embarassment if I ever showed them but if any one was memories to share like where your specific group was located and especially if you have old photos to show. That would be great!

Can anyone still recite the oath? What about small tokens or items of interest while you were a member?

Oh yes, and if anyone knew anyone in the Girl Scouts or Brownies too join in!

    Original-1910.jpg

Your brother was using an awfully old handbook even for 1967! I was a Scout from 67 - 69. Some fond memories:

Summer camp and camporee's at Camp Stake.

Camp outs at Double Lake, Jones Forest and Lake Stubblefield.

Everyone dumping their canned food into one pot. No matter what you put in it - it always tasted the same.

Climbing the Jones Forest fire tower.

    Scout Fair at the Coliseum.

My favorite - Order of the Arrow

    Still have my uniform...

  10. Weird was a local program that came on channel 13 KTRK around 10:30 PM on Saturday nights. It featured horror movies and didn't have it's own home-grown material other than the opening and closing. I seem to remember the opening showing shots of Seymour's saucer (Cadet Don's alien puppet) flying in space and Weird materializing from haze and, of course, the voice.

Maybe you're thinking of the Outer Limits or something like that? I think it had an alien face in addition to the "Do not attempt to adjust your set!" intro.

  11. That's ringing a vague bell - spoken before announcing the movie for that night, maybe?

I think it was part of the last verse.

Yes - Weird (spelling correction) was great with the opening shots of Seymour's flying saucer and the echoing "wwweeeiiirrrddd".

I believe there was a Late Weird too but I never got to stay up that late.

  12. "The Late Show...first come the news, the weather then ...The Late Show.

The greatest get-together place for movies you'll see - right on your own TV!"

Can't remember all of the closing song:"...no matter what night - you're never alone; we'll be waiting for you - here on the great Late Shooooow!"

Then we had the Late Late Show with a voiceover announcing the movie & stars with the "From Russia With Love" theme in the background. ^_^

And also on KHOU at 1 PM on Saturdays - "Science.....Fiction.....Theater!" My dad and I never missed that. The Post TV guide would sometimes make a comment after the movie description, and his favorite was the one for Women of the Prehistoric Planet - "Forget it!"

There was a line in the Late Show theme "seven nights a week you are invited to The Late Show". Something like a bridge between the first part and the second part. There was also one line which stated that channel 11's proud to bring you the LAte Show I believe.

There was also Jungle Theater on Saturday mornings channel 13 I believe. Played mostly Jungle Jim and Tarzan movies.

And who could forget Wierd on Saturday nights.

  13. I've always been curious about Bouray's...I think that's the name...the Mexican/Vietnamese/Cajun place.

If I ever find myself downtown during the day, I'm gonna stop in for some enchiladas, refried bean sprouts and dirty rice.

I've only tried the Vietnamese at Bourays and it was alright. I suspect it's hard to do anything really well when the culinary culture spread is so great...
