  1. just don't end up on the wrong side of the barrel.

Well, I thought it goes without saying that someone carrying should be proficient with their firearm. After all the thing won't ward off evil by itself.

  2. My wife and I don't sweat the crime enough to move, love the neighborhood, but do take precautions. We've had a friends' home burgled on this side of Main (East) and a friend of a friend robbed at gunpoint on the other side. So, better alarm system in the house, and carry a gun when we walk to dinner (small 9mm, so not much of an inconvenience).

Pretty optimistic that the neighborhood will continue to improve with the rampant development.

  3. Guess I'll have to stay clear. not into teenybopper places.

for me there's almost no real "music" made today. people can't read nor play music. Most can't sing either. People with bad taste buy the crap and that is why they keep producing the same stuff.

I hear ya. Did see Jude at the Continental Club last night though, great concert. One guy who can sing and a guitar.

  4. Hey everyone... I've lived in Midtown for a year and half. I'm new to this site but I hope to contribute as much as possible. For my first topic.....

How many banks does Midtown need? There's a WAMU on West Gray and Smith, a new Capital One going up at Bagby and Hadley, and now I see a Chase going in at McGowen and Louisiana. I mean seriously, what's up with all the banks?

Don't forget Bank of America! Actually, there's a lit of them at http://www.houstonmidtown.com/midtown.cfm?a=cms,c,38,1

    Bank of America

    Central Bank

    FirstCapital Bank

    Metro Bank

    PrimeWay Federal Credit Union

    Wells Fargo Bank

    Washington Mutual

Existing development rules clouding vision of pedestrian-friendly Midtown

Obtaining variances for regulations focused on automobiles proves difficult

Like explorers hacking a path through the jungle, a small but determined group of developers, planners and civic leaders has struggled for 12 years to create a unique urban environment in Midtown.........

  6. My wife and I toured around inside a month ago. The floorplans are very awkward and inefficient, and some materials are apartment grade. I wouldn't have paid more than $300k-320k for the square footage, appointments, and location. They would be a hard sell even in a strong market. :-(

  7. If anyone has the time or interest, the Midtown portion of WikiMapia could use more entries. I posted the link on Midtown's Wikipedia entry as well.

    http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=29742507&x...amp;l=0&m=a

To update: use the toolbar in the top right corner WIKIMAPIA > ADD NEW PLACE. Then just box in something to label, click save, and describe it.

WikiMapia seems like a great idea, has anyone used it before?

  8. Actually, the designation "Midtown" isn't all that new. I did some research for something a while back and found references to it back in the late 1800's. Of course, all that was posted on the OLD HAIF, so it's all gone.

For those new to the area, in the years following the founding of Houston, the area known as Midtown was where people went to get away from the bustling downtown of Houston, centered around Allen's Landing. It was the 1890's equivalent of today's River Oaks -- a leafy place for the rich to retreat.

Has your research yielded any material for the wikipedia entry? I'd love to see the Midtown entry grow into a detailed, thorough, and accurate account of the neighborhood.

BTW: VicMan/WhisperToMe has been making some nice contributions (a lot), thanks!

I just added the demographics, and I plan on adding the street signs.

An Arts & Entertainment section would be helpful. Any suggestions?

    I'm thinking...

    • Houston Fire Museum (http://www.houstonfiremuseum.org/about.html)
    • Houston Center for Contemporary Arts
    • Lawndale Art Center (www.lawndaleartcenter.org)
    • Midtown Art Center
    • The Recording Studio w/ Destiny's Child's Mural???
    • ....

  9. There is a Dunkin Donuts on 1960 West of I-45. The only other one I can think of is off Webb Chappel in Dallas.

But if we are talking DD, why not talk Tim Hortons? That's my fave when in Ottawa.

Wonder if they could make it here?

Tim Horton's has ventured into the US, but not very far south of Canada (even though American owned - by Wendy's).

  10. Starbucks did try to go into the heights, but the heights association kept them out. I dont know the whole story, but I know that much to be true.

The starbucks in Randalls is a license deal. Its not owned by Starbucks corporate and wont close. I dont think that Starbucks corporate really even considers it a location as far as their site selection goes. Thats why this one is so close to it.

Starbucks site selection process follows an 'Ant Trail' philosophy (that's what Starbucks calls it) where they'll build anywhere there's existing traffic. They'll build 2 across the street from each other if there is sufficient traffic on both sides of the street.

  11. How did this turn into a BMW racing forum

Yo, SOMETHING needs to be done to bring clubs and crowds back to da Richmond Strip. A LOT of friends in H-Town are pointing out that they don't go clubbing anymore because most of the clubs are now Downtown. They don't feel too safe there.

Whatever happened to cruising down the crowded Strip at 2:30am? It used to be something to brag about at one point.

I have always avoided Richmond for the cheesy clubs and especially the cheesy people. Downtown is perfectly safe. Although I prefer Midtown lately for the more chill bars/people and proximity to home. (might be getting old)

  12. From my vantage in our break room on the 29th, all I see is a field of green in this location.

A park would be much better than some tacky apartments.

I'm really excited about mixed-use space on the rail line, and the corresponding foot traffic it would receive from the apartments. Camden's property could further increase the light rail usage and heighten Midtown's attractiveness as a retail/entertainment destination. So I'm very much in favor of the development.
