Under another topic I saw that someone had posted a picture of the open air middle part of the then Gulfgate Shopping City. If you look to the left, you'll see Newberry's, and if you look to the right, you can make out a Grant's store.

Yes, the Foleys that opened up over here in Parkdale Mall a couple of years ago is now Macy's. I can't keep up with all of these mergers. I'm not familiar with ANY remaining soda fountains with counters and stools in this whole area, and Beaumont's population is over 100,000. I think that there was at least one W.T. Grant in this area, but it folded MANY years ago.

I have a question. why does the Chronicle building hide behind that ugly ficade. They were (are) replacing the ficade or cleaning it. i would love to see how Mr. Jones built the chronicle above and around the old theatre, that is hiding behing that. I think it would look incredible along with all the other building that have fake ficades. The West building was one of those and the ficade was taken out, not the greatest building but looks better without it.

Does anyone know what happened to the Aragon Ballroom? The building has been redone, and I can't really tell if the structure that held the ballroom still exists or not. This the building on Rusk immediately behind the Montagu Hotel.
if you are talking about the one on the corner of rusk and main. the yes it is still there. i seem to remember they had renditions of what the building would look like without the fake ficade. i actually have that picture as my screen saver. it was a drug store on the corner of rusk and main. They were going to have the rooftop open for a cafe of some sort. I could be wrong and the rendtion may have been for the one on mckinny and main, but it would look great none the less.

If I get a new camera this month, I hope to take it into Third Ward, East and West of 288. West of 288 may be more attractive but Southmore east of 288 is a total jewel.
And I use to go here about once a week.
this isnt church's chicken its the old Jim Dandy chicken chain. notice the the logo has both JD in it
Do you all remember the one downtown and where it was located???? at the corner of main and praire at the current jefe bar

If i recall correctly, this building was built around 1905 and had the top floor added in the 20's or 30's. Unfortunately, my files are all in an obscure word processing format from the 90's that can't access at this time! It was originally used as an office building catering to the cotton industry.
it was located at the chase bank parking garage
These photos are from"The last of the past : Houston architecture, 1847 to 1915": an inventory and architectural stylistic history of remaining early commercial buildings, Houston, Texas, 1980 / by William Scott Field for the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance, the Harris County Heritage Society.
I used to occasionally eat at Charlie's Barbeque because they were open late
I actually think my red arrow was one building too far north
the current location is club Copa Cabana the inside is completly diffrent

I am stunned to hear that someone else knows about Grant's! My mom used to take me there to eat hamburgers before going to the dentist around 1966-67. The bus would stop right in front, more or less where the tile on the sidewalk says Grants. How cool! I wish I could find a photo but no such luck even on Google. Please show us all if anyone finds it. I have great memories of that place, had the best toys and the coolest Santa Claus around I do have his picture with my big brother and me. Still tripping!
ill take a pic with my camera phone and post the new one. you are correct HouTran and Metro bus stops were indeed within a few feet of grants.

[edit] Timeline
1900: Foley Brothers was opened by brothers Pat and James Foley, two young and enterprising Irishmen, on February 12 with $2000 borrowed from an uncle. The 1400-square-foot store located at 507 Main Street in Houston, Texas, was stocked with calico, linen, lace, pins, needles, and men

W. L. Foley Dry Goods Company Building
1889, Eugene T. Heiner
The Foley Dry Goods Company store is a rare survivor of Victorian Houston. Fortune tested its will to survival with serious fires in 1976 and 1989. But the determination of architect Guy Hagstette, gallery owner Doug Lawing, restaurateurs Jamie Mize and Dan Tidwell, and preservation doyenne Minnette B. Boesel has overcome Houston's unwillingness to treat its past with respect. They saved the Foley Building and Hagstette designed a pair of apartments on the second floor (with potential for more apartments on the third floor) that maintain an admirable balance between domestic accommodation and architectural preservation. Next door at 220 Travis, artist Lee Benner is pursuing preservation of the shell of a part of the Foley Building, while on the other side developer Doug Crosson and Minnette Boesel have kicked off the transformation of the Hermann Estate Building (1917, F. S. Glover & Sons) into apartments. The sidewalk canopy along Travis is a reminder of what all of downtown Houston was once like.

I was just wondering and i have good old pics of these but does anyone know the locations of the original Foley Bros Dry Goods later Foley Bros department store then Foleys'
I know they used to be at 506 main in the Slainte bar by Praire. They were also at a building which is no longer there by the building occupied by Live Sports Cafe. I was told they were also at the building occupied by Twelve Spot bar. I know for a fact the first 2 are correct but does anyone know of the others espcially when it was called Foley Bros Dry Goods. thanks and ill post old Foley Bros picture from Main and Preston-Praire

i do rember at the old TG&Y downtown on Praire and Main. Now club Suede had the yellow sign outside when the store was open. Also at the old Jim Dandy's Chicken accross the street, where Jefe Bar is now had the same sign for a fallout shelter. They were still there as early as 2000, but are no longer

All I can say publicly is that the Texaco Building will definitely be renovated.
Major equipment was purchased two weeks ago.
As for my sources, see the Milam Hotel topic for a general idea.
