Beaumont ISD will soon be able to claim one of the largest scoreboards in Texas, thanks to a board-approved purchase of almost $1 million.

  2. The city of Beaumont is also trying to relocate the Amtrak stop from the middle of nowhere to the downtown area. And the Port of Beaumont has started work on the project to move the railroad switch yard from behind city hall to land inside the port which will greatly increase the size of the Riverfront Park.

The city council has decided to put the River Walk on ice for a while. It would have connected the lake to the Neches River but there was a lot of opposition to it because of the cost. Maybe after these other downtown projects are finished and more businesses move downtown and a new downtown hotel then maybe a river walk would make sense.

Opposition was not cost, opposition was because they wanted it to be voted on. These idiots want everything put to a vote.

  3. I think I've found BBQ nirvana: Lockhart, Texas!

Went to Black's BBQ there last weekend and loved it! This is alledgedly Texas' oldest BBQ restaurant (est. 1932). Black's had great melt in your mouth brisket, all the sides you come to expect from such an establishment, small dining room with bottles of sauce on every table and great home made pies and cobbler.

Recommended for those passing through the area -- or looking for a nice weekend outing.

I also noticed a couple of other large BBQ palaces that I might try out on subsequent visits (Oh yeah...since I consider myself a BBQ connoseur (sp?) I'll be going back... :D )

There is 2-3 BBQ restaurants in Beaumont much older. Tillmans and Patillo's as 2 examples.

  4. When the lines on the Bolivar side are long, it's usually just as fast to drive to High Island, then up to I-10 and back to Houston. I used to spend a lot of time in Bolivar, back when an Uncle had a palce there and I ahd way too much free time. I haven't been in a while, and would probably be shocked at what it looks like now.

The area is growing fast. The bridge plan is dead now, however It could be brought back in the future. Gilchrist and High Island will be touching

each other within the next 10 years.

  5. (Beaumont) - Construction is underway on a $70 million development off Dowlen Road where you can live and work. Metropolitan Park, a 35-acre project, will include a plaza with retail and commercial shopping, restaurants and office space. A short walk away will be one- to four-bedroom condominiums starting at $180,000. A residential section will include 40 lots, where half are sold. Developers expect the retail spaces to be ready within a year. The condominiums should be available in the next two years. (Reprinted from July 8, 2008)

  6. Water connects dots in grand design for downtown Beaumont

BEAUMONT - Water taxis, a two-acre marina with theater and an expansive lawn are ideas being tossed about in the plans for a downtown lake/waterway and event center that could take its first steps toward reality as soon as next summer.

On Tuesday, two Houston design firms outlined their proposals to establish downtown as a destination complete with a lake, waterway and marina.

"We as individuals are mostly composed of water. We as a planet are mostly composed of water," Scott Slaney, principal architect of the Houston-based SWA Group, told the City Council.

"Water is a very special natural resource that we hope to take full advantage of."

Slaney said in order for the lake to remain healthy, defined as not growing algae and attracting mosquitoes - it needs to be at least two acres big and six- to nine-feet deep.

The entire lake/event center park property is about 16 acres and is located between Neches Street and Martin Luther King Parkway off Crockett Street.

Downtown project could turn Beaumont into little Kemah

Picture it: A vibrant downtown with a placid lake and rippling waterway crowded with people.

That's city leaders' vision for downtown Beaumont.

On Tuesday, a Houston architectural firm is scheduled to present a conceptual design of a proposed lake off Martin Luther King Parkway at Crockett Street and a waterway near the entertainment district.

Initially, city officials envisioned a 10-acre lake between Neches Street and Martin Luther King on parcels of land owned by 23 different interests.

However, plans now call for a scaled-back version of the lake - two to three acres - to allow for more thus-far undisclosed amenities, City Manager Kyle Hayes said last month.

The design for the proposed downtown lake, waterway and something to tie it all together all is in the hands of SWA of Houston.

SWA's resume includes work along Buffalo Bayou in Houston as well as waterfront projects in San Diego, Long Beach, and as far away as Beijing.

For Beaumont, the project could turn out to be something like a smaller version of Kemah or The Woodlands.

  8. The Spindletop Restaurant was also closed on Monday. Do you have some inside info on why they abruptly closed? It seems to me if these closings were intentional then they would have announced it before they closed. It's good to see Beaumont moving ahead with these plans, but I find it hard to believe these closing were related to that.

Last year there was talk of a high-rise hotel next to the Civic Center. What's the status of that? It would be nice if they built both a high-rise hotel and condos, but I have my doubts. I assume high-rise in Beaumont would mean 10 to 15 stories?

    Well yeah, 10-15 stories...

Crockette street is huge on new years and the 4th. If I was struggling, I would wait after the 4th to close. I find it funny they close

on the day the city approves a river through Crockette street. Read between the lines.

That hotel is most likely part of the river front developement, not the river walk developement. Nothing will

happen on the Riverfront until the Port of Beaumont removes their rail yard. A new yard must be built on Port

property first, if it hasn't started yet, it will soon.

  9. The lawsuit is not the reason for the closing.

REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL

    COUNCIL CHAMBERS JULY 1, 2008 1:30 P.M.

    AGENDA

    GENERAL BUSINESS

    1. Consider authorizing the issuance and sale of $30 million City of Beaumont, Texas, Certificates of Obligation, Series 2008; levying taxes to provide for payment thereof; and containing other matters related thereto

    2. Consider authorizing the issuance of $20 million City of Beaumont, Texas, Waterworks and Sewer System Revenue Bonds, Series 2008; and containing other matters related thereto

This includes the downtown lake and river. This closing will make way for bigger and better venues from deeper pockets. Stay tune, this is about get very exciting...

hint hint...btw, I hear Beaumont is looking for a developer to build a high rise condo next to this river.

  10. Here's a drawing of the hotel they are building in Beaumont (except it's going to be 4 stories, not 5):

    NextGen%20Prototype.jpg

It's not being built downtown but on IH-10 near Washington Blvd and Cardinal Drive. Here's a link to the website: Red Roof Inn Prototype Design

I think I read somewhere that the owner of this company originally from Beaumont.

No, you might be thinking of the Downtown project. Not the same. The downtown projects are waiting for the Port of Beaumont

rail yard to be relocated. This will begin mid-summer.

  11. Drove by the stadium today, they were doing work on the pressbox. I might drive over for a game when they get things rolling.

What you saw was the old pressboxes being rebuilt as a result of damage caused by Rita. The repairs are temporary because Ozen High school is still using

that stadium. Lamar has yet to release stadium plans for Lamar football. We don't know if the same stadium will be used or a new stadium in a different location.

There was mentioned of a new press box, private suites, turf, video board, and possible horseshoe stadium. Rumors are out that private donations are well above

8 figures. We should know in the next few months. The coaching search posted ended March 21st. A few rumored names; RC Slocum, Barry Switzer, and former University

of Miami National Championship coach Larry Coker.

  12. Looks like any development at all will be some time out. A minimum 2-3 years before they can even break ground. But progress is progress... I ain't holding my breath though...

No Pook, The riverfront will be the last part to start because the tracks are in the way. The downtown lake is the first part and that will begin soon. The lake will be west of the downtown area. Once the lake is complete, a river through downtown will be dug. Finally the river walk.
