  1. Cahill's used to be one of my favorites, we would go there once or twice a week. We stopped going because I moved a little farther away. It is a great bar, I still go every now and then. It's a heck of a lot more crowded now as compared to 4-5 years ago. Darkhorse is great as well. Anyone know how these places are doing with the whole no smoking thing. I can't imagine cahill's being smoke-free. Seems like a couple of waitresses there smoke enough for the rest of us.

  2. if the former convalescent home on Bayland can be rehabbed in to the show place it is now, any of the houses on the Blvd can!

Possibly, I imagine the house on Bayland did not have as many issues as the house on Heights since the house on Bayland was at least occupied for a while (I think, I don't think it set empty as long as the house on Heights). I never stepped foot in either property, so I can't judge.

Regardless, it takes a special buyer, one with a large amount of budget, desire, patience, and time to take on a major renovation like that. I couldn't do it.

One thing I don't understand is when people say that a property should be saved, who do they think should save it? Do they mean that a builder should do it, an individual do it, a restoration company do it? What if that buyer does not exist, what happens then? It just seems like people are saying "someone should restore this house, you cant tear it down", perhaps, but that's easy to say when it's not your time, frustration, or dollar.

  3. Another forum seemed to suggest the news cameras were coming out sunday to do a segment on the house. Anyone know if that happened?

I saw a segment on the 6 o'clock news on Channel 11 about the demolition, so yes, there was some press.

  4. I believe it said under construction(the web page) and does not show the true Blue Label Lounge feel and brand just yet. Give it a chance to develope.....This will not be your average Lounge, I will asure you of that...I have seen the lay out of plans and it will do nothing but impress! The true definition of a LOUNGE.

After viewing their website, I had a flashback to some "lounge" we went to on Richmond just west of Kirby. We walked in and the place was half full. There was no where to sit because (even though there were plenty of tabels) everything was reserved for later for people who had reserved "table service". Needless to say, we bounced out of there pretty quickly (an of course, never went back). I believe that place is out of business now.

I'll keep an open mind about blue label, though. Hope it works out for you.

What is the true definition of a LOUNGE, by the way?

  5. Any place that has a website that says it's for the "to see and be seen crowd" sounds horrible.

This place will be a fad for wannabe socialites and topless dancers for a few months and then it will die a slow death.

I'm with you on that, their website made my stomache turn a little.

  6. So, is Benjy's in the Heights a done deal? All I've heard is speculation up to this point...

I don't know if it is a "done deal", but it was talked about in the chronicle about a month or so ago. I would assume that it's still a go.

Also, does anyone know when Dahrma Cafe is opening up in their new spot?

  7. Chris Bozman did our deck today and I have to say it's just the most beautiful thing I could have ever imagined. He listened to what we wanted, gave us ideas on how to improve on that based on his years of experience and came up with a design that is really great. His price was unbelievably reasonable. Quality and dependable and the result tonight is incredible.

I would recommend him to anyone looking for a deck.

I'm glad that Chris worked out for you. We have been completely satisfied with the job he did. Before we met him, we had plans drawn up of what he wanted. He followed those plans, but took them to a new level. He is truly a craftsman.

  8. I can drive down any street in the Heights, close my eyes, hit the gas, and have a pretty good shot at crashing into a Mexican restaurant before hitting anything else. The last thing we need is another Mexican restaurant. If it's "Pappasito's-style" you're looking for, there's the El Tiempo on Washington or even Berryhill on 19th.

Good point, I'm just always pulling for and supporting new restaurants in the 'hood.

  9. Don't know if it still is with all the acquisitions they have made, but you probably saw their corporate HQ. It is a rather unassuming building on Yale close to I10.

I saw what Htwon girl is talking about. It's not their headquarters. I almost looks like a "shack" they can move to different places for events (street fairs, special events, etc.). I can't imagine Pappasitos putting a restaurant there, although I would love it if they did!

  10. I've only been in The Heights for 5 years, but I have been pleased to see how 19th has kept the same feel but also brought in new types of stores. Additions of Tansu, Crickets, Shade, Bliss, M2 have all been nice (how many antiques shops do we really need on 19th). What's more exciting to me is what is happening on Washington Ave. 002 Magazine did a cover piece this month on Wash. Ave and what it used to be to the city and what it is trying to become again.

  11. After reading many anti-condo rants on this website, I think some of you are being more than a little disingenuous.

"And much of the desirability of the Heights comes from its historic character." Agreed, which is why I find it baffling that some of you are defending condos.

"it could have become another townhome hell, like Montrose"

And yet you are advocating new condos. Which are better that townhomes....how?

I forget where I saw an artist rendering of what the condos will look like, but when i saw them I thought that they would look good in midtown, not The Heights. Everyone is happy because the developer consulted with the hood, that's great and all, but are we to the point where we are happy with condos simply because somebody asked what we thought

  12. I was talking to a realtor yesterday (that happens to live on your street) and she said that the property is currently owned by someone who is a primary at some bank here (I'm pretty sure it is Hibernia). Anyway, there has been talk that the bank is thinking about buying it from her as an investment and possibly developing it- but not as an actual bank- probably homes.

good. maybe they can do something about the mobile home park across the street!

  13. The plan was always for a regular target with an expanded grocery section, not a super target. It has a coffee place up front (starbucks).

Like all other targets it serves the function of convenience. It seems maybe some of the visitors to this target were expecting a different store. It is built like any other target.

I live in the heights and use it for the function it serves. This is for kitchen and bathroom items that I can easily run over to target and get at fair prices. The expanded grocery section allows me to get OJ, milk, bread or other items that I run out of. It definitely is more convenient than any other place in the vicinity.

Overall this is a plus for the neighborhood. :)

On another note the demolition of the old warehouse on the north side of Sawyer heights is complete. As soon as the torn down material is trucked away the progress for the heights can continue.

Also, the new bank on the property is coming along just fine. It will be a fine building!

I drove by that area the other day and saw a sign that indicated there was going to be a bar b que joint there.
