  1. i agree that strip center is horrible- i do not understand why other than maybe most people in the area are doing their business more centered around the Dairy Ashford intersection... whoever is running that strip center needs to figure it out... its a great locale...
  2. Kemah used to be great- but now is suburbia row... Take 'em somewhere in Montrose maybe or lower Westheimer... Of course if they are really into culture- tons of places off Hilcroft/Harwin area... Ninfas' on Navigation Kim Son
  3. Ha- i left there as fast as I could... we lived just down Richie Street and got the first wind of Champion Papers every morning...that and the acid rain... Old man worked at Armco Steele Co up off Federal then over in your neck of the woods TJones- working at USSteel in Baytown till the american steel industry fell out... I don't feel bad about being an oil field kid- everytime I see refinery row, i smell money... i now work for an oil major...corporate tho... ya i too wonder why people get their panties in a twist... we're all here cause we'd love architecture/skylines/real estate, etc... so let just have fun discussing even issues or ideas we think are stupid...
  4. well its an interesting proposal to say the least. i understand the scope of a project like that... i grew up in Pasadena and have always hated the fact that its mired in Chemical plants... as for being at the site of the battle, true that... as I said tho many memorials are built all over the world, that are not at the battleground.... think of arlington cemetary. iwa jima etc... clearly the magnitude of such a project would prevent it from happening. i just hate to see such a magnificent war memorial wasted... interesting to think about tho...
  5. i disagree... all across Europe and other places around the world, monuments are not built just at the sight of battle. Vietnam Memorial isn't in Vietnam... I say place a small memorial at the current site... Just hinking of ways to connect houston and texas' history with the world so to speak...
  6. The San Jacinto Monument IMO is a really wonderful piece of architecture in Houston. It symbolizes Texas History almost as fine as the Alamo. The only problem is its stuck way out in petrochemical/refinery heaven and is not at all a part of the Houston Skyline or anything of the like... I think it would be quite interesting to have it relocated somewhere up Buffalo Bayou- possibly in the East End where they are going to redo Buffalo Bayou making parks out of it, etc. Just off the Downtown Houston Skyline, but really a part of it...real close to town. I think it'd also be interesting to move the Battleship up there as well... I know its a crazy idea and of course it would not be the to close to where the battle of San Jacinto was... I just think its wasted now because of where it is. I think it could really add a great deal to Houston if it was right in town so it'd get much more exposure not just from locals, but tourists as well... Thoughts?
  7. it is true. i drive by the old and new location to and from work each day. sad sad... now a lot traffic from those older condos will likely start going there...
  8. that guy frank- i believe my mother said he went to Elementary school either with her or one of her siblings in Pasadena... Southmore Elemen...
  9. i doubt it gets razed... i mean the entire east and southeast side would only have Baybrook Mall?? too many consumers inside the beltway off 45 either side IMO for both Almeda and Pasadena to be scrapped...
  10. what a waste. place was i thought over priced and the pizza wasn't that good. the location was atrocious... i don't know who gave them money for that place but they shouldda told 'em to put it on westheimer... terrible business decision... terrible.
  11. i do not like where they are moving. i like where they are currently- it fits in with the neighborhood very well. the new place is set off and doesnt' tie with anything other than that exotic car place next door... but the old place is wayy too crowded. i think its a poor decision, but they'll make money no doubt.
  12. Personally I'd like to see Highway 6 set up as an elevated toll road or smart street ala memorial spanning from sugarland area all the way around 1960 to 45 with mainlanes below for regular traffic flow to the business area... i think the gap between 8 and 99 is way too wide... 99 is great for 25 years down the road but today its too far out.
  13. well my wife and i (she's mexican) barely get a second glance here in houston. we lived in oklahoma for a while and all the time was running into people giving us looks and even one lady at a golden corral refused to serve my wife...that was the only time i've ever thrown a fit in a restaurant and made a scene... speaking of atlanta- we were there once to visit her uncle...had the top off the car and pulled off 75 into Canton...all we saw were inbreds with confed flags everywhere and all we got were jaw dropped stairs... i so happened to have some charlie daniels in the car so i blasted "souths gonna do it again" so everyone in the town could hear it...that soothed 'em enough so they stopped making nooses... it was funny i think most of houston is fine- i'd feel just fine walking down the street with a black woman w/out fear of people not approving.
  14. Home builder offering $2400 in gasoline when you buy a house? Gosh, what areas of the home building process did they cheat on to come up with this extra $2400?? This is absurd... But this is America- plenty of idiots will fall for it...
  15. 529 a major thoroghfare to downtown from Copperfield?? How many people really live in Copperfield/Bear Creek that need to go downtown? Some yes but many people I know that move that far out work in the Energy Corridor/Westchase or even as far in as the Galleria. I know some people that work downtown too, but that's their fault for having such a heinous commute. Seriously Bear Creek area is only 5-10 minutes from I-10 and 529 isn't that far from 290. While there is a lot of development out there, 529 IMO is still a long way from needing expansion into a freeway or superstreet. Hell you chose to live out there (not flaming)...
  16. The common theme with all the worst areas of Houston I see 2 primary themes: (static things such as low income, below poverty line stuff like that is a given so I do not include them) Here are my 2: 1- Close quarter living ie APARTMENTS apartments, apartments
  17. i was hearing they bought 40 acres. but yes to the best of my knowledge they bought that piece...
  18. Well if you speaking of that strip of land I'm thinking of, I believe BP recently purchased what I assume to be all 40 acres of it. They are putting a temporary parking lot there which s/be completed in September I believe.
  19. So the rail line would not be subjected to the traffic along Westheimer and would be more efficient... Nor would we want 8 lanes of westheimer being held up for multiple trains per hour... Get it up off the ground and it can function on its own... Someone else mentioned the pedestrians crossing westheimer to get to the rail... Might as well have the rail elevated... just a thought. Personally me thinks the rail should be along routes that would add to the commercial business in that area. Westheimer of course is our most popular street for commercial shopping...SO why not link it directly along a route that will aid in brining more consumers to those areas... If its on Alabama- might as well have it along Westpark... I think along westheimer would also give it a more urban feel as well...
  20. Here's how I'd like the MetroRail to go...(from MIdtown) Elgin down Westheimer all the way out to Uptown. For Greenway Plaza- Add a small Spur Tramway from Westheimer down to Greenway... Westheimer IMO is a much more attractive street to add the Rail down compared to Richmond. I'd like it right smack dab in the middle of lower Westheimer... Once you get out past uptown if need be, Elevate the Rail so traffic on westheimer is not affected as much... thoughts?
  21. It seems to me that the development around Bagby/West Gray was done in the wrong area. Seems to me they should have worked harder in an attempt to center the initial housing in Midtown around the rail line off Main Street. Midtown Houston IMO is still 10-20 years away from being built out or even being close to being built out. I'm guessing they didn't build around Main cause of property costs, however I still believe it would have made the most sense
  22. I say if you're kids are zoned to HISD or any public school in the city, do what you can to get 'em in the magnate programs. I graduated from HSPVA after having spent a couple years in the Pasadena District (I caught a bus on the edge of Houston near Glenbrook Valley area) and the quality of education and students was night and day different... Even more than that- EXPECTATIONS of the students were much higher. we had kids from all the great neighborhoods in houston and all the worst neighborhoods too. had kids that were part of the country club and kids that were in gangs... however for the most part when the bell rang (or the A 440 sounded) kids were there because they wanted to be there... we had no fights at school and i'd come from a school where daily fights were common place... granted HSPVA is a performing/visual arts school however if you can get your kids to something similar...IMO its the way to go in Houston... oh and try to realize that just cause school isn't all white middle class does not make it a bad school.
