  1. Got my power back a couple of hours ago. Hope that's a promising sign for others in the Heights still without.

Did a bit of research on the Summit Club, and it looks like it may have been around for a while - I saw references to it in the Galveston paper from 1968 to 1977. Given some posts above, I laughed when I saw that one of the people listed as speaking at the club was Dick Semaan.
  3. Good for you! And bad for you - sorry about the computer...
  4. I don't have high expectations for my power restoration at this point. I'm fairly certain my issue is a blown transformer - I was outside at 3am the night of the storm and saw/heard the transformer go, and the lights go out - and my cluster of immediate neighbors doesn't have power even though most people around us do. But I'm in 77007 - very near the 77007/77008 border, but still in 77007. And the most recent CenterPoint info is saying 77007 is only 14% without power (77008 is 47% without power). Given the focus on zip codes and getting areas 80% back on, I'm guessing that I'll get power after those of you with transformer issues in 77008. This isn't a complaint - just my guess based on what I'm reading. *** I do have a complaint, though, about the level of information we're getting. A recent Chron article says:
  5. Sorry I haven't been checking this thread - still don't have power. Would be great if folks outside Houston wanted to sign. Thanks!
  6. No power at my house yet, either...
  7. Never posted from my blackberry before - hope this works. I lost power right about 3am. Most everyone else around me has power, so I can see the storm, and was out on my porch a long time watching it. Scary. But from what I saw on radar just before 3, I'm guessing this is/was the worst of it in terms of gusts. That's what I've been telling the friends staying with me - they're a little freaked out. Sad to hear about Chase. Glad you still have power, Red. Glad all of y'all are posting.
  8. Cable is back now. I'm going to try to stay up until the eye at least.
  9. Comcast cable been out here for about a minute now...
  10. They just said there's flooding east of Bay Area Blvd. So, Brookforest may be flooding soon, but not yet.
  11. I was in Brookforest for Alicia, too. That was a little scary.
  12. The rain bands are on the radar - they're getting close. We'll get lots of rain.
  13. Been out biking and saw no trees down in this part of the Heights. Done biking - wind getting too strong.
  14. Thanks. I was about to board up the upper ones just so I could see out better. But boarding the lower ones probably makes more sense. Only a few of my neighbors have boarded their windows. I think it's a smart idea, I just didn't buy any plywood - had a few sheets lying around, though.
  15. I have a 4 pieces of plywood and 4 tall double windows I'm going to board - but I can only board the top or bottom of each. Bottom ones are about 4-5 feet off the ground. Top ones maybe 7-9 feet. Anyone have an opinion on whether I should cover the lower ones or upper ones?
  16. So this is either something you already know (if you're also up) or something outdated, but... slightly dramatic 1am shift west to previous guidance tracks. Don't think this dashes my hopes and expectations of moving the storm east of us, but I've never been able to figure out how directional shifts in this storm correlate with ultimate landfall odds. Speed has always been the messy factor.
  17. I don't think my ladder is bigger than 20' - I got it home from Home Depot in my convertible with only minor havoc on Yale. I'll check with my Montrose friends tomorrow, but I doubt they have anything bigger. I'm not boarding my windows (inept and lazy), so I can at least offer you moral support.
  18. Sorry - just checking back in. I may have a tall ladder in my garage, which I have a hard time opening. I did a few months ago, and I assume it's still there. I think it's about 20'. One of those metal ones in two parts that slides. I'm in the same Heights area as RedScare, so can be a back-up option.
  19. So glad to hear it, Susan. Be safe. Musicman has my number, if y'all need to head north.
  20. He's not in an evacuation zone, and so the city is recommending he stay put and let those to the south evacuate.
  21. I'm curious, too - the link on the blog didn't go to the weather office referenced and I couldn't quickly independently verify the post.
  22. National Weather Service, Galveston Office: All neighborhoods [in Galveston]... and possibly entire coastal communities... will be inundated during high tide. Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single family one or two story homes will face certain death. Many residences of average construction directly on the coast will be destroyed. Widespread and devastating personal property damage is likely elsewhere. Vehicles left behind will likely be swept away. Numerous roads will be swamped... some may be washed away by the water. Entire flood prone coastal communities will be cutoff. Water levels may exceed 9 feet for more than a mile inland. Coastal residents in multi-story facilities risk being cutoff. Conditions will be worsened by battering waves. Such waves will exacerbate property damage... with massive destruction of homes... including those of block construction. Damage from beach erosion could take years to repair.
  23. PapillionWyngs - I sent you a PM with a second number at which you can reach another HAIF member in your mother's general area - possibly two, from the sound of it. Hope that helps.
  24. PapillionWyngs now has the phone number of a member in her mother's general area, though not in Park Place, so at least that's something.
