I'm no engineer, but the way this demo has progressed leads me to believe that this is just how the process works and we're seeing it in the middle stage right now. I would also think that it would be safer to rebuild the foundation from scratch rather rely on existing structures not built for the purpose.
It does appear they are using the existing foundation and columns since they have started building and is laying construction material on the existing foundation. If they were not going to use it, they would have destroyed the foundation and columns before construction.
This is going to save a lot of $$ on expensive concrete and labor which is smart designing.

I see that they have torn away the ceiling with precise accuracy to leave the columns with rebar sticking out of the top of them.
Are they going to reuse the existing foundation and columns for the new building? This is interesting but I assume they would save money not buying concrete since construction material cost has gone way up.

They are trying to sell the building 😭

Oh, so now they are promoting it as student apartments instead of tiny condos. I hope whoever buys it can make the building look more appealing instead of a sleazy motel.

Speaking of government funding, UH intends to ask the state for a $1 billion permanent endowment during the 2023 legislative session. At first providing an extra $40-$50 million/year disbursement to the UH system, with the potential to grow it like the other state funds.
This in addition with UH's current endowment of $1.103 billion (2021) will allow for a much needed boost in funding, especially for its goals to be a top 50 public university, and an invite into the AAU.
Also, should allow for easier funding of campus buildings and ultimately higher quality projects. Should be a treat for us Haifers in the future.
I think UH will get the funding especially under Dr. Khator's leadership. I would never bet against her.

Tower 5040 is a private development. It's apartments geared towards students. I'm still thinking this is a possible Moody Towers replacement because it speaks of beds (dorms) rather than apartments.
It must be an earlier version of Tower 5040 because:
1. Left of it is the Beale Village and the exact bayou curve from that vantage point.
2. It looks too expensive for UH housing design.
3. UH student housing will not have balconies or swimming pools.
4. UH intends to replace Moody Towers with affordable student housing which is what Moody Towers is.
5. Mostly all private student housing says "number of beds" in published articles.

Ownership of real estate is neither necessary nor sufficient (and in fact, not even relevant) to establish residency for in-state tuition purposes. Here's what UH says:
"Residency Requirements
Generally, applicants who have resided and been employed in the state of Texas for 12 consecutive months prior to the time of enrolling in an institution of higher learning are entitled to be classified as residents. Foreign nationals who hold F-1 or any other temporary visas are considered nonresidents and are required to pay the nonresident/foreign tuition charges."
So the residency rules haven't changed in 4 decades.

It's interesting to see a building marketed to college students with actual balconies. Drunk students are dumb. I used to be one.
The Matrix are $120,000 condos unless it has been repurposed as private student housing.

Here's something interesting from UH's website regarding their lobbying priorities:
Medical Research Facility at TMC3
Fund debt service to construct facilities for medical and health-related innovations at the proposed TMC3 facility at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. These facilities will enable and promote entrepreneurship, including a close partnership between basic scientists, engineers, technologists, data experts, business disruptors and health care professionals.
In the UH President's Fall Address, Renu Khator mentioned that the medical research facility will be built in the Texas Medical Center or next to the new college of medicine building on campus.

The UH new building may be part of the new TMC3 which is the massive research campus near the Texas Medical Center. All the other Houston medical schools are part of it so I suppose UH will be also.

This is from memory and I am officially old so it's not reliable, but I think UH built the building but several floors were not built out. Could this be funding to actually build out different labs in shell space?
I know they already built out some floors in Health Science building 2 to start the college of medicine for 2 years until the medical school building is complete. The new medical school building will be ready Fall 2022.

I would surmise that it is the The Health and Biomedical Sciences Building 2. https://uh.edu/facilities-services/projects/in-design/HBSB2/
Building 2 is already constructed.

UH gets quite a bit of love in the newly passed TRB (now called capital construction assistance projects) bill.
Medical research facility: $59,897,111
Hobby School of Public Affairs Building: $40,000,000
IDEA Lab: $52,409,972
https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/873/billtext/pdf/SB00052F.pdf#navpanes=0
Is this medical research facility the college of medicine building under construction now or is this a new building yet to be built. If it is a new building, I haven't heard any news of it.

I'm not crazy about the mix color scheme which makes it look like a cheap motel but I'll wait for the finished product before passing judgment.
They're using 2 different colors of the same color. Brown on brown, beige on beige. Oh and let's slap on a few white bricks in the corner.
Yes it is an improvement to the neighborhood, but I think they’re trying to hurt my eyes. 😆

All are 312 SF except the 3 ADA compliant units per floor, which are 382 SF, 473 SF, and 581 SF.
I guess that's fine as long as they have a full bath and at least a kitchenette. Please, no more community bathrooms.
