100% agree. As mentioned above, a good chunk of the engineering work is already done in those two sections, so I'm sure that will be the focus. Well, segments 1.5 and 2 since the current transit center would be partially into segment 1.

I know that there was talk of making the I-10 BRT continue on to the Galleria/existing Silver Line so as to not force a connection. I wonder if they would do the same, at least temporarily onto the University BRT if they start with these two sections.

Would be kind of cool if a bus that starts at Wheeler continued Westpark/Lower Uptown TC then continued up to NWTC and then back to downtown.

That’d be awesome. Like a circulator system. I’m curious to see what metro’s got in mind. (If this idea has been proposed. It’d be interesting)

Good news, we've got a whole bunch of buses that run from Downtown to the NW Transit Center right now, so you can get a preview of the Inner Katy BRT already. Some even stop only a few times on the way.

In reality, when you lose the actual benefits of BRT, mostly separated lane/special buses/at-grade boarding in stations it doesn't make as much sense to run one super long route when it would overlap with a bunch of existing routes (like the university line).

I do think that they will likely open up the project section by section and not wait until the entire thing is finished.

Yeah this thing is 25mi long along the entire corridor. I would be really shocked if they don’t open it 1 segment at a time. I’m willing to bet they want to try to connect up Lower Uptown/Westpark TC to Wheeler quickly and get that open first

  3. I’ve been seeing a lot of opposition to this over on Reddit (among other places), but I’m confused. I thought that segment 3 has been pretty heavily-supported overall, and it was mostly segments 1 & 2 that were in contention.

I keep seeing people talking about lanes being added- do they mean the whole project, a specific segment, or is it the putting multiple freeways together and giving it a big footprint people are talking about? I was under the impression that txdot wanted to add managed/transit lanes but not much else.

Is the project still open for public comment, or did they close the surveys? What is the timeline they’re looking at right now?

I would poke fun at "Omaha based sushi restaurant" had I never been to Omaha.  But there is a very nice little restaurant scene in Omaha.

Anyway, MKT is adding a sushi restaurant.  Now, no one can complain about not having sushi in the Heights.

Oh my gosh I am so hyped. There’s a Blue in Dallas that we try to hit whenever we’re up there, really good sushi, fantastic selection of vegetarian/vegan sushi and other offerings if you’re about that, all around really good place to eat.

More fun facts from the 2020 Census:

The population in the Houston CBD stood at 7423 (not including group housing, which for downtown is primarily jails).

The population inside the Loop is right at 500,000.

Wow, I was kinda wondering when inner loop would hit 500k people. What areas are primarily driving the growth, or is it just sorta spread out over the whole area?

IIRC wasn’t the previous highest-ever inner loop population just under 500k in the 1960s? That is awesome that people are moving to the “core” area and revitalizing it more.

I read that the inner loop population in 2010 was 443,949 people. So in 10 years, it added just over 50k people to what’s already a pretty built-out area.

Sorta related but I’m super curious to see numbers for the Uptown/Galleria area.

  6. The self-guided virtual meeting is online now. You can submit comments until 11:59 pm on 8/31.

    Here is the link

I was really happy to see all the new stations being taken into consideration, and REALLY excited to see the proposed Franklin station- very smart of them to tie it into Amtrak/POST. I wonder if someone at POST/Downtown tossed their hat into the ring on that one? If so, that’s pretty brilliant, especially with the future extension to the HSR station, connectedness to Uptown, that will all really help that project.

  7. Trying not to get too OT, but adding to the list of hotels, apparently the Hogg Palace Lofts were re-opened as a hotel by Sonder. Not sure exactly when that happened (but super glad it did, that’s legitimately been one of my favorite downtown buildings since I was a kid)

Glad to hear something is being done here. Green Street always seemed like a development that arrived a bit too early to Downtown.

  8. FWIW I was there walking around yesterday and didn’t even immediately notice the substation. They’ve got it pretty covered up with greenery it looked like, but in the future it’d be nice if they moved it. But as it stands it’s hardly the worst thing in Downtown.

The Skanska site had equipment on it, but I didn’t get a pic because I couldn’t really see anything lol

  9. From the Houston Chronicle. Basically, Houston is considering changes to the planning rules that would allow for more so-called “Missing Middle” housing to be built. (housing between the typical single family home and denser, multifamily apartment complexes). There is a survey online right now until August 16th that they are asking members of the public to complete. This appears to be planned to go before City Council in 2022.

How do you feel about this style of housing? Have you ever lived somewhere that had it?
