  1. "I?" Do you have two names on this forum or are you just the friend who was in the picture?

I am the person in the picture.

I also run the site, but I didn't post the link in this thread.

I only noticed it was here when I saw it appear in my referrals list.

  2. In my opinion, I don't think the Astros will make it to the World Series this year. I just don't see any good relief pitchers for us as of now.

Aside from Load Em Up Lidge, it's not relief pitching. Gallo's gone. Nieve's looking like a long reliever that's got speed and improving control. Borkowski's a bit shaky, but will improve. Freaky Zeke is gone. They'll drop or trade off one more when Backe's back. (And they have Hirsch, Sampson, and Barzilla available when Roger blows out his hamstring for good or Andy Pettite throws himself on Roger's grill to end the pain and suffering)

Qualls, Wheeler, Springer, and Miller have their ugly days, but they're not as shaky as the start of the season.

    It's hitting. It's all hitting.

Garner gave Ensberg, Lane, and Wilson a change to turn things around. Wilson's performed. Ensberg and Lane haven't. How long before they're toast, for crying out loud? December?

Ausmus is back to his old habits, giving Munson hope that Ausmus will do fashion shoots full time soon. Everett's worse than Lugo ever was, making Bruntlett look good.

I'd think at this point, Gary Gaetti needs to look back and see what's gone wrong. And he either needs to fix it or leave.

  3. If I want a Coke, I ask for one.

If I want a Dr. Pepper, I ask for one.

I do not really have a generic term for such things anymore, and I don't remember if I ever did.

I suppose this makes carbonated sugary beverages fungible in my little microeconomy.

  4. At work, but at least I can watch the cats enjoying the day off.

METRO's on Holiday schedule, so no 9 and the 102 and 56 are cut back. With the rains, the 56 actually took on water. Kinda neat. Not every Memorial Day I can go boating on a bus.

  5. It's even more interesting when they boomerang back to a different station.

After leaving 13, Alan Hemberger bounced around some Texas markets before coming back to 39

After leaving 13 when Art Rascon was brought in to fill the 5, Vicente Arenas bounced off of San Antonio to come back to 11.

By the way, the ratings are in. 11 won all but the mornings, and the most interesting result is that KPRC came in forth in the 5PM time period behind a Spanish language station.

  6. Of all the memories I have of working at That Place, once that I will cherish a lot is wandering aimlessly into the second studio, bearing the pathetic wreckage of some keyboard that felt the full wrath of some hurricane of a producer or reporter, and hearing piano music.

It was Marvin, just tickling the ivories on the semi-tuned worn-out piano on the Duncan set in between Whatever and Whatever Else before the newscast. What was just a nuisance to others on wheels, reduced to a set piece that received occasional wipes with lemon Pledge instead of a professional tuning, Marvin gave it some of its dignity back by actually playing it.

He stopped for a bit, and had something to say that was simple, deep, and put it all into perspective before puttering off to Whatever Else.

I guess I didn't cherish the memory enough, because I don't remember what he said. But the one thing I am certain of is that it put everything into perspective.

  7. I think Bill White will work hard to rehab Carol Alvorado's image and groom her as a replacement.

It won't work, but he'll still try it. I think he's put a lot of effort into preparing her for the role.

  8. I must say that Deborah's been around a long time and at least she's resisted the plastic surgery knife unlike several of the reporters above. I think she knows she's not all that anymore and just enjoys her job.

From personal experience, she also happens to be one of the best reporters in town, slob or no slob.

The fact that people judge newspeople on TV by hotness instead of quality of reporting says a lot not only about the industry but the audience.

I tend to judge the value of a news source by the number of times I'm surprised by something going on that I would have liked to see or participate in but I missed from not knowing, and then going back and seeing which outlets announced it before it happened.

I also tend to judge them based on the amount of time they take to inform me of something. I can learn so much in a minute of RSS feeds than I can in 15 minutes of news, 7 minutes of promos and animations and chatter, and 8 minutes of commercials.

  9. So how does Canada handle their "biligual" national anthem? (French and English)

Every time I've been to a hockey game down here where the locals allowed O Canada to be sun, it was in English. Even when it was Montreal playing the Cubs, which probably should have been a mashup of French and Polish.
