  1. Wells Fargo Plaza is a Perfect TEN! Well set apart from the others in the skyline with the dollar sign shape, the blue-green tint on the glass and the sleek and clean feel to it. <_<

At first I assumed it was the tallest -- until I found out neighboring JP Morgan Chase had that honor. Chase is so obscure when viewed from the west at Buffalo Bayou Park.

  2. Updated August 31, 2004; reupdated September 23. As of this date, Houston ranks #7.

  3. I rode the trolleys a few times ever since they debuted DT in 1999. Over the years and monhts, ridership declined, so the hours declined as well. I remember the trolleys operating all the way until 1 AM - seven hours after downtown goes dead from the 9-5; they also operated on weekends including Sundays. Later on, Sunday service was all cut, Saturday service was cut down to the Route N Trolley which operated Nights only, and overall service scaled back to 6 AM to 7 PM hours weekdays.

I suppose the reason for the 50 cent trolley fare is because they are so underused. They sure are unable to compete with METRORail because of the free ride passes between UH and DTC. Not to mention how hot and humid it is -- they'd rather walk the tunnel system instead of waiting at the bus stop for a trolley, which runs TEN TO FIFTEEN MINUTES!

  4. I mostly listen to anything Urban Comtemporary.

R&B - Usher, R Kelly, Ginuwine, Alicia Keys, Boyz II Men, Keith Sweat, Beyonce, Lauryn Hill and Babyface.

Hip Hop/Rap - Lil Flip, Screwed Up Clique, Big Moe, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Nelly, Marhsall Mathers, Outkast, Ludacris, DTP and LL Cool J.

Old School/Motown - The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers, Prince, Luther Vandross and Earth Wind and Fire. I used to love it early on before I started listening to newer stuff, later on got back to listening to old school again because my mama was pretty hard on me about it.

Gospel - Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Sounds of Blackness, Mary Mary and Smokie Norful.

I also listen to a little bit of jazz and reggae as well.

For radio: I listen to 97.9 The Box, Party 104.9, Majic 102.1, Power 97.5, and 1360 AM just to name a few. I can't stand 104.1; Top 40 Pop music is pretty gay and girlish.

  5. I don't even like Austin's New city hall. Austin could have done better than that old old school look. It looks like what the average civic centers out in the suburbs would be when built in the 1970s. Why do they have to move out of the Old City Hall for this crappy style? What is thought of as unique to some is really nothing at all. Even has a water fountain little kids wouldn't even be allowed to play in. Not like the Water Garden in Fort Worth etiher.

  6. :( Sad to say, it is not going to be another Urban station. It is KROI 92.1 FM, a Hot AC station now. Could bring on serious competition against Clear Channel station KHMX Mix 96.5.

Charlotte divison of Radio One picked up another FM station to add to their only station, WQNC Q92.7.

While most of Radio One's stations are Urban formatted, markets such as Philadelphia, PA, Louisville, KY and Dayton, OH have non-urban formatted stations owned by Radio One. These used to be owned by Blue Chip Broadcasting around those areas before Radio One bought them out. Check the stations portfolio on http://www.radio-one.com.

  7. Part 2 of post. There are three Urban stations in other markets that use "102 JAMZ" - Infinity Owned WJHM 101.9 in Orlando, Entercom owned WHJM 102.1 in Greensboro and KBCE 102.3 in Boyce, Louisiana.

Another change about Majic in Houston is that their music selection has not faired too well ever since Clear Channel sold it and The Box to the Urban Radio Specialist, Radio One. The Box, which is still Rhythmic format, had a more urban contemporary type of playlist throughout much of 2001 when it was facing competition to what was then Hot 97.1 and Power 97.5 when launched.

Back to Majic's music selection. It still managed to stay on top of the game when Cumulus' KRWP Power 97.5 changed from Urban/Hip Hop/R&B to an Adult Urban. Since then, Power has played a more extensive selection of R&B, even hard-to-find songs at night, thanks to Kevin Slow Jammin James. Mostly because their antenna tower is in Beaumont, which made competing against Majic impossible because of their signal which fringes out heading further out west. You can't even hear it too well in Downtown either. That's about to change because Cumulus months ago picked up a country station on 103.7. Be on the lookout in January 2005 when Power 97.5 switches dials and becomes "Power 103.7."

  8. To make a correction: It's spelled "Majic" with a J.

"102 JAMZ" never really existed; it was just a made up radio station for the 1994 movie filmed here, "Jason's Lyric." On the website http://www.kmjq.com, it's still simply "Majic 102, More R&B Hits and Oldies." But the voiceover says, "Majic 102.1, Houston's R&B Leader and the Home of the Tom Joyner Morning Show," which means the website has not been updated in less than a year since "point 1" was added. Otherwise, Radio One, which owns Majic 102.1 and 97.9 The Box, has been slow to update their station websites, since half the other sister stations do not even have websites in other cities.

I suppose the reason they added "point 1" was to avoid confusion with another station with close to the same name down in Beaumont, Cumulus station KTCX Magic 102.5. Both KTCX and KMJQ are pretty well heard on the fringe out signals midway between Houston and Beaumont.

  9. I'm in favor of anything that takes some of the traffic off of I-45. But I guess you have a point -- do we need that much capacity? Maybe they could make it like in New Jersey where it's cars on the Garden State Parkway and trucks on the New Jersey Turnpike, which parallel each other across the northern part of the state. Both are toll roads.

Or like Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway: 14 lanes broken down into 3 local exit lanes and 4 continous express lanes into downtown in each direction.

  10. If I was out in Katy, I would do the same thing: go to the Park and Ride Lot on Addicks, and take one of the METRO Commuter Routes on the Katy Freeway. Thank God for the HOV system -- without accidents in it, of course. At least while all those cars are stuck in those three lanes, you'll be glad to know that your bus goes 55 mph in the most efficient HOV system of them all. ;)
