  1. I was driving by yesterday and saw a sign for a 'variance' on the apartment complex at Briar Forest and Kirkwood or Briar Forest and Wilcrest. Forget which.

    What's going on here?

Are these not one of the complexes that had so many problems after Katrina? Didn't Matress Mack want to buy them?

I saw that sign today. That apartment complex has recently been refurbished, but I'm not sure how "nice" it really is.

  2. This morning about 10am, there were about 6 or 8 State Troopers in uniform with bright yellow vests at the Eldridge & Briar Forest intersection. It looked like they were surveying -- they had that type of equipment. Anyone have any idea why State troopers were doing this? We thought something must have happened at that intersection, but what?

  3. I was stunned to turn channel 13 on early yesterday morning and see a new anchor. Then Tom Koch said that Minerva had "retired last week". I love the morning team on channel 13 (I miss Doug Brown, though). If it's true that they were moving Minerva to 11am only, then that is a demotion. Ch 13's morning news is always so highly rated, so being moved off of it would be a demotion to me.

    We miss you Minerva!

  4. Yes, it had Shannon and Pruetts from KLOL, i wonder if they will go to 103.7 FM KIOL

I used to love listening to Shannon and Pruett during my afternoon drive home from work. Then they moved them to the morning, and I didn't listen to them. I really miss them in the afternoon. I hope they pop up again on talk radio somewhere.

  5. Since I live right there, I've seen what they are doing ot the Bentworths' and all I'm seeing is they are replacing all the windows and doors and repainting the outside...

Probably dolling up the insides, replacing doors and carpets and kitchens/bathrooms,,,

I agree that barring bulldozing and rebuilding a Class A property Bentworth and these Watters won't be Class A HOWEVER if they renovate them nicely and raise rents a good deal that alone should really reduce the amount of crime in that area...

I am not expecting radical conversion but just enough to keep out the sh!tty crime that goes on over there...

I drive past the Bentworth a couple of times per week, and so far I'm not too impressed. I hate the exterior color, LOL. A friend of mine who owns a home near Kirkwood & BriarForest called the new owners a few months ago, and she was told it would be a Class A property. I don't think so!

  6. I suppose I am missing out on something, but working M-F keeps me out of the loop; and on my days off, TV (particularly morning tele) won't cut it. I won't rush to turn on this program from my fella HAIFers' opinions. :P

You just don't know what you're missing! ;) Jonathon Walton did a report today on Good Day Houston. It was about a senior citizen dance group. He gave them a copy of Carmen Electra's DVD that teaches you how to do a lap dance. And they showed them doing it.

  7. The rise of "Master Planning" is the reason we will never see anymore areas like the Memorial villages built anymore. Admittedly, some of the newer neighborhoods around Gessner and Memorial and points west were "planned" in the 1950s, but the early villages closer-in developed pretty much piece-meal as people bought land, built houses and moved in. And yes they were very far out in the country when that started back in the 20s and 30s.

That's why much of Memorial doesn't have the cookie-cutter look and feel so characteristic of "Master Planning" -- little boxes all made out of ticky tacky that all look just the same. It's also why it's still possible to find some very large properties there in the heart of Memorial.

Many of the master planned communities have houses that all look the same. Cookie-cutter is right. You're right -- people would go out and buy land in Memorial and build their houses. There isn't another house that has the same floorplan. Little by little, the older homes are being sold, then torn down, and huge houses are built on the lot. As long as the lot is big enough for that size house, I don't mind. I just don't like huge houses that barely fit on the lot.

  8. What makes the memorial area so affluent, despite of the huge lots, and nice homes. To which all of them lead to nice families to move in, and then the schools turn out to be nice too. But what else? I mean what if I'm developing a new master-planned community, what should I do to make my new master-planned community in to a new memorial area?

My inlaws moved "way out there" to the Memorial area (now it is Hunter's Creek) back in the early 50's. They bought a couple of acres, but later subdivided. We recently inherited the home, which is on 3/4 acre. The Memorial Villages are like living in a small town. I also like that it is zoned -- no convenience stores or strip shopping centers on every corner. It's hard to believe that you're living inside a huge city. It's very quiet. I love all the trees, and the other poster was right about them keeping up with the deed restrictions. The police force is very responsive, and I can say that I feel safe.

  9. I really want to like this show, but what aggravates me is that she rushes through segments. I have it on now, and they are talking about hairdryers. I would have liked for her to quit rushing the guests -- I got very little out of this segment. I wanted to know more about the different dryers, but Whitney wouldn't allow the guests to elaborate on anything. If you're going to cover a topic, then do it right. :(:)

  10. The apartment complex located at the southeast corner of Briar Forest and Kirkwood (close by) that has been there for years is boarded up and apparently soon to be demolished. Don't know what's going in there, but it should upgrade the neighborhood. There are lots of really nice homes nearby. Maybe this will start a trend.

A friend of mine who lives in the neighborhood near Briar Forest & Kirkwood called the owner of the complex regarding its status, and she was told that it is going to be reburbished and become "Grade A" apartments. We'll see.

  11. ;)

He was too short to be in the photo, I actually read somewhere on this forum that they were minimizing his time on the air, I think everyone got "Radar overload", he was over exposed.

Anyways, how rude of us to talk about Radar on Byron's thread, poor guy!

Here is a quote from Byron's now defunct KPRC profile page.

Well Byron. . . I don't think you will be returning that favor anytime soon buddy.

I knew bringing Jason Brewer meant someone was getting the ax!, I said so last month in this thread!

Damn I am good, too bad it was not Frank Billingsley though. <_<

I thought it was going to be Anthony Yanez at first, but I guess Byron Miranda was the real target. He was just so new, I would have never thought. And to think, he moved to Houston just for this job!:o

So what do you think is going to happen at Channel 13 since they just hired a news meteorologist?

LOL about Radar -- if you go to the "News Team" page on click2houston, the weather team is:

    Frank Billingsley

    Jason Brewer

    Anthony Yanez

    Radar The Weather Dog

And here we see the webmaster has photoshoped the family photos to make the Severe Weather Team smaller, but they still have Frank Billingsley upfront and center, as TJones might comment, looking like a douchebag, A-class douchebag!

Look at him being all dramatic with his arms crossed.

    He looks tough!

    But where's Radar?
