Now H&M has a two-level store under construction in Mesquite’s Town East Mall, according to information on a city of Mesquite building permit. It will be between Dillard’s and Sears. At more than 19,700 square feet, the store is about the same size as the one under construction in Plano at the Shops at Willow Bend.

    ...

Rumor is that H&M will be taking over the Boarders location at the Houston Galleria

  2. They are also scouting for a Houston location....

H&M opening first Texas store at Dallas' NorthPark Center

It's finally official. NorthPark Center is getting Texas' first H&M store.

The Swedish fast-fashion retailer plans to open a 24,000-square-foot store at NorthPark in the second half of 2011.

    ...

It's likely that NorthPark won't be the only store H&M opens in Dallas over the next few years. It has about 200 stores in the U.S., including 10 in both Manhattan and Chicago, five in Atlanta and three in St. Louis.

    ...

In Dallas, it could be moving into the space vacated in January by upscale furniture retailer Robb & Stucky. That two-level furniture store opened in 2006 as part of NorthPark's $225 million expansion.

Known for its low prices, H&M isn't exactly the upscale coup that NorthPark brags about scoring, as it does with its recent Gucci opening. But it battles with Galleria Dallas and a plethora of regional malls and shopping centers in the market to secure the first-in-the market stores, especially if the concept has the cool factor associated with H&M.

  3. This is excellent news. I just checked out their website (Pearl Real Estate) and their only "urban" conversion right now is the Embassy Suites in Ft Worth. Since Embassy Suites is building new, I wonder who the brand might be? They are opening a new build Westin in Austin in 2012 so maybe it will be a Westin????

I used to work in the 806 Main Bldg from 1993 to 1996. It was a strange old place but it did have tunnel access and adjacent parking. Main St was very different back then and the street level walk to the courthouses from there was always an adventure, especially in the summer when the smell of piss on the old Rice Hotel was the worst.

  4. From a person living in Woodland Heights.

Lloyd and I took the dog on a walk as we often do after dinner, around 9 Wednesday. When we were 2 blocks north of the house there were two guys hanging out and on their phones. At first I thought "oh no I shouldn't have turned". They just didn

  5. Has anyone heard whether or not they are still planning to place bollards along the street to prevent people from driving on the trail, or on the grass in between the trail and the street? Every day I see a guy on a Vespa fly by my house on the trail. And now all the "lovely" grass they planted is being driven on as people can't figure out shere the road ends and the trail begins.

I've also heard that they are doing no additional landscaping other than the "grass" they planted; that it will be up to the homeowners living on the street as to whether or not they want to make any additional plantings. That's fine with me, but I sure as heck would like to get those plants in before it turns 90 out!

The bollards should start to go up sometime next week starting with the 1100 block of Nicholson since they have had so many problems with people parking on trail and grass. After the bollards are complete, TXDot plans to do one more planting/spraying of grass....I would assume within 2-3 weeks it would be safe to start planting.

Also, I have heard that the Heights Association is working with the Urban Forestry Dept and several other business to help to plant additional trees/landscaping on the trail (although this effort may take some time). The last I heard was that TxDot was only planning on planting around 150 trees.

  6. don't even try here. Dallas is so much cooler and hip. So many more urban areas ... Feels just like NYC in some places. It has great art scene. Houston art scene and coolness only rivals Brownsville....

    Try a little harder ....

This comment made me laugh so hard, I spit my coffee out....I am assuming you were kidding.

  7. What irritates me is when cars park in the Nicholson bike lane. I notice that the problem is south of W 11.

BTW: Every Sunday I ride my bike along the Nicholson trail from W 17 to W 8. At the end of the trail W 8/Nicholson, there is a townhome complex (SE corner). Are they abandonned? THe front half is built but the back half (about 10) seem to be in purgatory.

The townhome project at Nicholson and 8th are Waterhill...they went bankrupt in the middle of project.

They cut down at least 10 100 year old oak trees for that crap project

  8. What is the Heights Kids Group (listserv). Sounds like they have some valuable information as well. How do I find that?

I'm not sure how to get on the list....I am on a email list for our street and someone emailed us all about this today.

Apparently, it just happened so the word is getting out fast.

  9. Neighbors - The following was just posted on the Heights Kids listserve. By the way, if you are uninterested in these reports, please just let me know and I won't include you on these emails.

i just responded to my neighbors alarm going off. cop told me that 3 hispanic young males are hitting houses right now. (10:30 a.m. friday). please be on the look-out and call police. one house at fugate was hit. don't know where 2nd.

  10. I agree with the previous post regarding the recent gentrification in the discussed area. In the last 4 years, companies like "Bastian" and "Tricon" have been building new homes in this area. All of these changes have improved the area for the better. I have yet to see a slowdown even in this economy. If you follow the streets (Alexander & Dorothy) going north towards downtown Heights, you will see the building frenzy. Unfortunately, this new development has also done away with some nice, older homes worthy of renovation.

The 900 block of Nicholson has been completely rebuilt by Pyramid builders and Sullivan builders. This block had only crack houses and run down buildings just 5 years ago......HUGE improvement.

The area will be unrecognizable in a few years.

  11. That guy is weird looking. But one of the best RE Brokers in town.

For the longest time, I didn't know if that was a guy or girl....even the name Terry didn't help. I guess that's why he grew the beard......

  12. the Heights is always a good choice as far as gay friendly goes. There are 4 gay couples on my street including myself and we all interact, hang out and get along with other neighbors.

The gay thing is really a non issue.

As far as schools are concerned, I don't think you have anything to worry about until high school.

We're a lesbian couple currently in Tanglewilde with our 16 month old. Lately, it has become clear that many parents in the neighborhood are never really going to get comfortable with us. We both grew up in neighborhoods with lots of interaction, and we really want that for our child(ren.) We don't want our daughter to be punished for the fact that we're on the homo team.

Since for some reason HAR doesn't list voting patterns or predominant sexual preferences on their site, can someone point us toward a neighborhood with:

    a) lots of gay or liberal families

    b) near Medical Center/Bellaire/West U area (partner is in nursing school in med center and I work at 45 and Fuqua.)

    c) good public elementary and junior high schools (realistically we'll most likely move before high school)

    d) houses in the $200-300 range

    e) a little style wouldn't hurt - we like midcentury modern but we're not the types to live in a "perfect" home with all vintage furniture

We're thinking Westbury, but which sections are most likely to fit all of the above? And are there neighborhoods other than Westbury?

  13. I have heard that Waterhill is in bankruptcy.

They were constructing 60+ units in the Heights at 8th and Waverly.

they completed 8 or 10 units (very poorly) and there are about 12 other units

that have set there for several months half complete. I feel very sorry for the current owners.

I'm posting here because it shows up high on search engine results.

We've lived in a Waterhill townhome since December 2007. Though we like the design and our neighbors, tt was the worst decision of our life. To date:

    1. Only one of the two community gates actually works.

    2. The one gate that does work doesn't have a locking pedestrian entrance. It's just open.

    3. We were never given the gate remotes as promised.

    4. The retaining wall behind our home is still incomplete.

    5. The tree in front of our house was dead when we moved in.

    6. We regularly receive notices from contractors who were never paid by Waterhill for work.

    7. We've received two notices threatening to cut off our water because Waterhill didn't pay

    8. Of the planned 78 homes, only 11 are done. No construction has been done in months.

    9. The empty land is overgrown and has attracted all sorts of critters.

    10. The solar light above our garage does not work.

    11. We were never provided touch-up paint despite more than 10 requests for it.

    12. The sheetrock in our home is uneven at the studs.

    13. Our toilet leaked only one month after moving in.

    14. Weather damaged two of our neighbors' roofs due to improper installation.

Our water is being cut off tomorrow due to Waterhill's non-payment. It's inspired me to share my complaints with the world.

  14. Scheduled to arrive at 10:20 pm... i have friends coming into town from Canada at 9:20... too bad they will be getting into crappy terminal A... no chance of seeing anything.

it is arriving at 9:25 this evening.

I am picking up someone arriving on this flight.

  15. I'm looking for a print of the original Heights neighborhood layout, same one they have up in Carter & Cooley. Apparently the antique shop they got theirs from is out of them, does anyone else know how to get one? I am sure this has been covered in past topics, I just haven't been able to pinpoint it with searching.

Contact the Houston Heights Association http://www.houstonheights.org/index.htm

or wait until April 5 for the home tour and buy one then.
