The guy from Brinks alarm that sold me my system grew up in Pineview Place 50+ years ago. He was telling me what a nice place it was when he was a kid. His parents looked at homes in Pineview and Idylwood. Back then they were the same price. His grandmother lived with them and wanted the better bus access at Pineview so that is why they bought there.
What a small world. The guy from Brinks is my older cousin, and my grandmother never drove a day in her life, she always took the bus. I remember going with her to First Baptist Church downtown on the bus she would always let me pull the line to to stop the bus with a ding. between the air conditioning blowing up on the windows, where I had my face planted watching everything and the smell from the diesel engines it was hard to stay awake. It really was a great place to grow up.

Thats one of the worst things I have ever seen. I see someone has already roped off a spot to park a Taco Truck, you know the early bird gets the worm (after he drinks all the Tequila).

Does anyone remember the Airline Drive-In Theater across from Northline Mall? Didn't see it in the photos

Does anyone remember these old amusement places in Houston? what they were called? where there may be pictures of them?
The ski slope at the intersection of 610 West Loop and Southwest Freeway which later became...
The waterslide at the intersection of 610 West Loop and Southwest Freeway which finally became...
Lone Star Amphitheatre at the intersection of 610 West Loop and Southwest Freeway
OR HOW ABOUT...
Malibu go-cart raceway and arcade at the Southwest Freeway
Games-People-Play...I believe it was on Fondren....big 80's hangout with arcade, waterslides and go carts..
The little go cart place off westpark (Southwest Freeway ran in front of it)..the track was lined with red and white tires...
I remember the Malibu Grand Prix off I45 near Little York one of three that were here in town.

I remember back in the early 90's there was a rumor that Walt Disney was thinking about putting a theme park West or Northwest of Houston but didn't think the economy could support two parks. Does anyone else remember this? or was I dreaming.

Would anyone have any pictures of the inside or outside of the gulfgate cinema or maybe even a close up picture of the walkover bridge from gulfgate mall? I have seen alot of aerial photos but you can't see any details and it looks like they were taken before the cinema was built.

I worked at Battlestein's one summer while I was in High School. Switched over to Foley's that fall, lots more business so we didn't stand around with nothing to do. They got bought out by Beall's I thought -- at least the one in Sharpstown Mall did.
This was back in the days when retail stores were closed on Sundays and only opened till 9 pm on Mondays & Thursdays. We used to stand around Mon & Thurs night with an average of about 4 customers a night. The ceiling in that store sort of looked like the underside of an egg carton, and we'd kill time by throwing some light weight object up to the ceiling to see if we could hit the high points.
It was that summer that Battlestein's FINALLY got electronic cash registers. Before that we had cash drawers and hand wrote tickets & figured in the tax manually. My sister had worked at Battlestein's a few years before that and they didn't even have cash drawers -- instead, they wrote up the ticket and sent that along with the customer's money or credit card to the cash office via a canister similar to what you see in drive-though banks. Isn't that funny!?
Thanks for letting me reminisce.
Back on topic, I also remember Sakowitz II on Nasa Road 1. I worked for IBM (for Nasa) for a semester in college so I used to drive out to Clear Lake every day, and I shopped at that Sakowitz II sometimes at lunch. It was a pretty small store with not much selection.

I remember having a black-and-white TV with a broken knob, so you had to change channels with a set of pliers, and a tin-foil glob for an antenna.
We wuz po.
I was the remote at our house!
They measured the picture tube in square inches instead of diagonally

Does anyone remember what the name of the church that was at Woodridge and Winkler Dr?
It was in the corner of the Gulfgate parking lot. It was a big brick building with a tall white steeple.
I lived in the apartments across the street from there (Gulfgate Village Apts) passed by it a million times, never went inside, I went to a Lutheran school five days a week and then to the 1st Baptist with my Grandma on Sundays. I never had time to go to any other church. I guess I did have my Saturdays open, I'm a slacker.

1st Baptisit moved to I-10 and N. Post Oak. There is a (maybe)20 story building there now...Howell Oil?
I too went to 1st Baptisit Church downtown with my Grandma (loved riding the Bus, those diesel fumes were like a narcotic)
Here is a link I was just looking at two days ago

Of course!
The dealer:
Now here are two business that I never saw, but I remember hearing their commercials on the radio back during 1962-64.The first was Tommie Vaughn Ford. I read in the Houston Chronicle that he passed away last week, and that his dealership is still in business.

Mike Persia had dealerships in New Orleans at 300 N. Rampart and 1361 Canal Street. There was one in the Houston market too. At one point I remember his commercial tune with the drums used for Joe Conti Chevrolet. It had all the same lyrics but the name was changed.

As a kid I remember watching:
The Honeymooners
Ed Sullivan
Red Skelton
Dragnet
My Mother the Car
Lost in Space
My Favorite Martian
Mr. Ed
Tarzan
Superman
Batman
Ultraman
Gilligans Island
HR Puffinstuff
The Bannana Splits
The Green Hornet
The Monkeys
The Beverly Hillbillies
The Brady Bunch
Bewitched
I dream of Jeannie
The Twilght Zone
Weird
Night Gallery
The Night Stalker
Godzilla Movies
Karate movies
With only three or four channels, sure seemed like there were more choices, and now with hundreds of channels (cable, satillite, dish) its hard to find anything to watch.

the other day i was in san antonio, and i noticed that next to the Tom's snacks in a vending machine, there was a "Senor Tom's" frito knock-off
Senor Tom's reminds me of the Frito Bandito "I yie yie yie"
Thought I would help sevfiv talk about snacks and not 50,000 leagues under the sea.

The grocery store that we went to in Gulfgate back in the early 1960s was called "Weingarten's."
This photo I found in my yearbook, It was spread over two pages thats what is wrong with the middle.

I found this one in the back of my high school year book, it had sponsors names typed all over it so it took awhile to clean it up. Its a closer view of the sign.

Like I said, can you tell me how to come up with those old newspaper ads?as far as old print ads, i believe PCfixit owns the papers.
I have three papers that I have saved over the years, I use to have more but as many times as I have moved these three are all thats left. One that my dad had saved from the day after Kennedy was shot 1963 the Post and two, the Post and the Cronicle from the day after the first space shuttle disaster 1986, I also scanned some pictures from the back pages of my high school year books. What would be cool is if someone could find a old yellow pages from the 70's and post some ads with the exact locations of stores and restaurants, so we are not guessing. someone has a uncle or a aunt or even grandparent that is a packrat like me and is using one for a doorstop or just has it put away in there attic.

Thank you. I thought that I remembered one somewhere around there. Like I said, I lived in Houston from 1962-1964. Four stores stand out in my mind from Gulfgate Shopping Center: Weingarten's, Newberry's, the toy store in the corner, and the underground bowling alley. I remember my mother telling me that we couldn't go into Joske's or Sakowitz because those stores were for rich people.
Chet Cuccia
Found these in an old newspaper from 1963

The Horseshoe pit was built by Mr. Fine who lived in the trailer park at the Trailer closest to the pit. I lived in the Village Way Apartments on the other side of the fence. I lived in the same apartment for 17 years, I also had a friend that lived in a house on Plum Creek named Tim Clendinum, also a friend that lived in the other apartments on Plum Creek his name was Mike Kimsey and then the brother and sister whose parents owned or operated the trailer park, thier name was Rhino and Janice. Small world.
