  1. Anyone tried Dolce Vita (map) yet?

Believe it is owned by Damarco.

Went to Dolce Vita last night and loooooved the pizza. I got the proschuitto pizza and it was magnificent. The prices were very reasonable.

$4 appetizer (mushrooms in some type of cheese)

2 $7 glasses of nice wine

$14 great specialty pizza that filled 2 of us up (guessing 14")

I also found the ambiance and the service to be quite enjoyable. I'll be back for sure.

  2. Well we stopped by on Saturday and had a great time. Nice selection of beers on tap, friendly staff, solid jukebox selections, and an all around good vibe. The crowd was nice mix of guys, gals, and the young and old. Welcome to the hood, we're glad to have you as the closest bar to our crib!

  3. Most of what I've heard is from a pal of mine in Dallas who owns a record label. Apparently, most of his thoughts are around the closure of music venues and perceived increases in crime.

I spent quite a bit of time down there in 2000 - I actually lived in the Magnolia Hotel (old Mobile building on Commerce) for 6 months and would walk to Deep Ellum a couple of times a week. I hope it isn't going downhill because I had a lot of fun down there, just what I've heard.

Here is a link that seems to summarize the subject.

  4. hmmm...

If you are referring to the townhomes on the NW side of La Branch and Elgin, they are more around $500k, which is definitely steep. I think they were banking on the Collective driving up prices, and essentially put the cart before the horse.

Just south on La Branch are some new Tricon homes going for around $350k, with 2 already sold, one with a sale pending.

Last I heard there are quite a number of folks interested and signing up to get into The Collective. They are working to change the designs, reducing the number of units, probably to make them a bit bigger. That should help justify the price.

As far as the people walking around, I'd say there are all kinds of folks walking the sidewalks during the day. Tons of people, like myself, hit the pavement daily with the dogs. There are actually a lot of students walking to ACC, as well.

I'm still positive on this side of Midtown (and love living there).

  5. Wild. I went down to the Cactus to grab some fish tacos and a rita the other night and noticed it was closed. Stopped by the Tispy Clover again and had a few pints. Found the staff extremely friendly (introduced themselves, a handshake as I was leaving) and once again and enjoyed myself.

  6. Without specifying which palms where look best, I like the way palm trees look and found them a good choice for placing along the highway. It is amazing when you look around and realize how many palms there are in this town. First place that comes to mind is W Gray.

Surprisingly, palms line Canal street in New Orleans down around the Quarter. Most people would never think that. What I mean is they certainly aren't just for southern Florida.

Another benefit is palms shoot up fast if they are watered enough.

  7. Just spent a weekend in NO and went to the quarter. It is a bit different than it used to be, but still a great place to have a good time. Most differences are 1) less crowds 2) less panhandlers, artists, street performers, 3) tons of military police at night, and finally 4) everyone, I mean everyone, is EXTREMELY FRIENDLY.

Of course, not everything is open, but plenty of places are. Some signs of damage exist, but it isn't like other parts of town. If you are thinking about going for a visit, I say do it! You'll have a great time and the city needs those tourist dollars to pick up.

  8. We did one of these services over the summer that'll get you on MLS cheaply, the end result was we paid around 3.5% total, including the buyer's realtor. During the week we were up, we had 3-5 realtors trot buyers through looking at the house every day. The house sold in 1 week and the price we got was extremely competitive. There were 4 other houses for sale within .5 miles, so we knew how to price right.

A note is we did this in Florida, and the market was hopping. Results may (and do) vary. B)

  9. So you don't think CVS will notice or even care that they are out of place and consider rebuilding? Why not?

$$$ - they didn't move there to be a part of the community, they moved there to make a buck. As long as the store is making money, they won't budge. Theoretically, you could try and boycott them or something, but I can't imagine that working.

It is a heartbreakingly awful location, especially right across from the park. What really gets me is their oversized parking lot. As if that many people need their drugs refilled and some makeup at the same time.

While the new Walgreens that is coming in just a bit further south is nothing to get excited about, the location feels a lot more appropriate.

  10. I went here about a month ago and wanted to leave before I even ordered a drink. Did not like the vibe at all, and really couldn't put my finger on it. I expected it to be more upscale and relaxed, I think, but it was uber crowded, smoky, and busy. This is actually the first bar I've been in Midtown so far that I haven't enjoyed.

  11. ^^^ agreed. i see almeda becoming the next kirby - a vibrant and active corridor between hcc/midtown and the tmc.

I agree, too. We are about to move over to S Midtown next to HCC and are really stoked about being in the middle to all the action around the Gray and Brazos area to the North, along with having the Almeda area pick up equidistant to the South. Plus each area has its own unique vibe. Not only is it fun to cruise to those areas on the weekends, but also we'll pass through on the way to work in the Med Center and Downtown. We didn't really discover this area until after we decided on the house, so it was a great surprise. There is so much space in between Elgin and Hermann Park with outstanding potential.
