I love this picture so much, it's just so nice to look at.
Me too. I see at least 3 different architectural styles/periods here. A great example of Houston's growth over the decades.

Cheers to HOUSTON !!!
I agree with you, but think the "serious players" in our city have known this all along, and pay little attention to Austin and Dallas, honestly. Despite our boom and bust cycles, our industries are simply in another league (i.e., Energy, Medical, Space, Shipping). Houston is a national and international industrial/financial powerhouse. I believe Austin and Dallas residents understand this, whether they would admit it or not. I will be the first to admit to having a 'Houston inferiority complex' because we don't have rolling hills, "America's Team", or as strong an "image" as Austin or Dallas. But, really that's ok. There's a reason more people call Houston home than any other city in the state. Before we can expect others to "get it", I think we have to embrace and recognize Houston for the powerhouse it is, with its warts, but also the many, many other things that make this city amazing.

The residential density here seems to be reaching critical mass and should soon be enough to spur more practical retail that will give Midtown a more complete sense of place.

Over the weekend I've been to Dallas and Austin visiting family. Having been in Texas' "top" three cities in such a short span, I'm beginning to appreciate Houston more. Austin is "pretty" and fun, and Dallas is "flashy", but Houston is on another level, imo. 609 Main is a "grown folks" tower, built for the nation's most diverse city, a Texas city that transcends stereotypes and trends. In comparison, Houston is a "serious" city--serious about industry, healthcare, philanthropy and the arts. A truly diverse city--as relevant to America's third coast as NY is to the east and LA is to the west. Our congested, messy, always under construction, international, thriving, blue collar but rich, soon-to-be-Super Bowl-host (again) city is amazing in so many ways. I have been guilty of comparing Houston to Dallas and more recently Austin as it "grows up", but I won't do that anymore. Texas is big enough for all, and Houston, I believe is Texas' truly "world-class" city.

they're gonna need bigger fences.
It's well known that students go to the shell station at Calhoun/OST for cigarettes. Women don't go there alone. It's not a safe area for students to go, especially once the sun goes down.
So how are the residents of this place supposed to get to campus? Are they supposed to walk across MacGregor park? Drive? Ride Metro for one stop? After dark???
More student housing is awesome (whether university funded, or private). This location is absolutely horrible.
UH itself is not a terribly safe place due to location, but the campus PD is very serious about keeping the students safe within their bubble of influence, there is no campus police between this housing unit and campus.
Maybe this will be a catalyst to help make it a safer area, but crime stats are what they are and right now, this is not a safe location for kids that are barely old enough to live on their own that have very likely lived in suburbs their whole lives.
This just looks like a bad idea.
Not sure what "well known" means, but here are the crime stats for the entire city of Houston. Please use facts to support your claims. I am a resident of this area, and while it is by no 100% safe (no area in Houston is), your claims contain hyperbole that are unfounded.

The Hamilton's location is similar to apartments in high-density areas that face major thoroughfares. I've seen them in China, Chicago, etc., but to have constructed this--w/ balconies no less--in Houston at this point is absurd. We are not that dense...yet.

It's crazy this wasn't a parking lot already considering it's two blocks from Toyota Center and two blocks from GRB. Just goes to show how much of a dead zone that the southeast corner of downtown still is.
Actually, a lot of those grass fields currently serve as parking lots during Rockets games, concerts, etc. Good it's being surfaced at least.
