  1. Is the market for these new apartments really those living in pre-1980s small complexes or 1990s garden style apartments, though? I doubt it. If anything, I smell redevelopment opportunity a la Memorial Heights.

In any case it will certainly be interesting to see how what I’m calling the “Central Core” market (inside of Shepherd) has evolved 10 years from now.

  2. Not sure if this is the right forum but giving it a try ...

Can anyone shed any light on the history of the Brookhollow development?  Was it an Exxon/Friendswood development?  Did it coincide with the construction of the North Loop?  What was there before?  Has it always had such a big government (State and County) presence

Seems it must have been a major development at the time, with a completely new replatting of streets on a suburban-type model.

  3. There are very few large complexes 30-40 years old inside the loop due to the sewage-related building restrictions in the 1970s (probably ended up being a good thing in the 1980s). I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the central core (inside Shepherd) had an dearth of real multifamily options until the last 10-15 years when compared with other cities.

I’d imagine the market that is going to be most pressured is the West Loop as well as some of the older Midtown units (but are there really that many?).

  5. Hopefully the Astros will create something like what's outside the AA Center in Dallas with the land they acquired close to MMP.

I did note the new Jones Plaza plans refer to the ability to accommodate large theater-style screens for events.

Yeah, I remember seeing the stadium parties in previous years, but it is kind of a lame atmosphere being inside a mostly empty park. The park outside Minute Maid isn't really adequate for this on a large scale. Discovery Green would be the place to do it right.

It was actually a great environment in 2017.

What is Houston lacking to make it a tourist destination?  From my perspective the things that are the biggest draw for tourist areas Houston will never have.  We don't have the right geography, historical pedigree, or cultural significance that other tourist dominated destinations have.  Houston should focus on it's strengths which are food, museum district, and performing arts.  I did see Mayor Turner mention bringing an amusement park to Houston on Twitter.

Not sure why we doubt ourselves. Houston has a pretty spectacular historical (albeit modern historical) pedigree, as good as any city in the country. It may be “ugly”/not conventionally beautiful, but it’s a place that a lot of people have come from all over the world, for whatever reason (certainly not because of tourist attractions) it felt like home, they were welcomed by their neighbors as if it were home, and they made it home. And that doesn’t even begin to consider the world-changing technological advancements that were made by Houstonians in the oil and gas, space, and medical industry.

One of worst “no builds” in my mindis the Nau Museum. That would’ve been a fine start in telling the story. Another great idea would be a National Museum of Immigration affiliated with the Smithsonian that would tell the domestic and international immigration story.

A new Astroworld would also be great of course.

Why call a Ellington a "Spaceport" when there are no flights into/out of  space from it? In fact, there are not even any facilities there, but only a few nifty PowerPoint shows and a few pieces of paper ..... that is called "Hopeium" in my vernacular.  Call Ellington what it is, an airport, until they actually get a contract for space travel.

The City has (and is annually maintaining) a spaceport operating license from the federal government.

That said, there is no "Ellington Spaceport," there is a "Houston Spaceport," which is a really a real estate development, at "Ellington Airport."

More on Spaceport Houston from Houston Chronicle yesterday:

The Houston Spaceport has inked a deal with pilot training company FlightSafety International, the third tenant of what the Houston Airport System hopes will become a cluster of aerospace companies.

Houston City Council approved a 30-year lease, with the option for two additional five-year periods, for an aeronautical training facility at the Houston Spaceport at Ellington Airport. New York-based FlightSafety International is seeking to relocate and expand its current operations near Hobby Airport.

Spin for poaching from existing tenants (at HOU) and adding a company with no existing ties to the space industry.
