  1. Has anyone considered a fundraising drive to buy the River Oaks/Alabama Theaters from Weingarten outright? These little protests/boycotts/meetings/delicate flower sessions are not doing a thing. Seems to me the only thing that Weingarten understands is money (not an unreasonable thought from a corporate standpoint). Purchasing the theaters would prevent them from being demolished.

Yo, Carolyn Farb, rather than stand there and complain, get some of your fellow rich folks in River Oaks and buy the place! Put your money where your mouth is.

The boycott thing ain't going to work. Watch "You've Got Mail" as an example of that.

  2. You are correct, the Art Moderne architecture of the 1937 buildings are dominated by clean lines, planar facades, and strong horizontal lines. This is a little difficult to see, since those 1980s black awnings obscure much of the buildings' intended appearance. I have attached a photo from the 1940s, so you can see the buildings without the awnings.

The proposed buildings are not a successful interpretation of the original architecture. Yes, they have a curve facing Shepherd, but the buildings posess strong vertical elements that completely detract from the planar surfaces and horizontal emphasis that is inherent in the original architecture. The vertical elements also dramatically increase the perceived scale of the buildings, making them stick out like a sore thumb.

Vertical elements are more indicative of the Art Deco of the 1920s and early 1930s. The current buildings, which date from 1937, are Art Moderne - a derivative of Art Deco that emerged in the late 1930s and lasted until the early 1950s. Art Moderne favors a horizonal emphasis, rather than a vertical emphasis. To say that the proposed buildings are a successful replacement shows a grave misunderstanding of architecture. Like you said, it is a shame that we will have to lose the old buildings in order for many people to see this fact.

The new buildings look like cheap tilt-up to me...

I had never seen this old photo of the shopping center. If anyone else has any photos of the River Oaks, they should post them here.

  3. Looks like they are just about to demolish the north side of the River Oaks Shopping Center. I walked around it today and saw work crews pulling up pipe and constucting a fence around the complex. For posterty, I took these photos yesterday so that we can remember it the way it was. Why they couldn't just turn the existing structure into a BN I have no idea.

  4. I was checking out har.com and found several condos in the $40-70k range at THE SUSSEX highrise on 7520 Hornwood Dr near Sharpstown mall off of 59. Does anyone know if this is a nice condo complex to live in? What about the area of town? Along the same lines, anyone have any thoughts of 2016 Main in Downtown?

I'm looking for a purchase a condo but I would like to keep the price under 80k if possible. Does anyone know where I could get info on maintience fees for condos in Houston? Har does not list them.

    Thanks

  5. How did this turn into a BMW racing forum

Yo, SOMETHING needs to be done to bring clubs and crowds back to da Richmond Strip. A LOT of friends in H-Town are pointing out that they don't go clubbing anymore because most of the clubs are now Downtown. They don't feel too safe there.

Whatever happened to cruising down the crowded Strip at 2:30am? It used to be something to brag about at one point.

Uh...that's because this is 2005 and not 1991....there is a time and a season.....

  6. I'm just curious what kind of film was used in this and your other posts. Many appear to be slide film. When I've worked with old slide film the color balance has typically decayed over time to an extreme (usually becoming red/magenta). The color balance on your images generally is very good.

Did you adjust the color balance to restore it?

Also, you may want to scan the slides using a scanner with ICE (such as Nikon Coolscan). It will remove all the dirt.

You are correct they are all slides. Most if not all had not be seen in 40 years. My dad had them all in those Argus slide cubes rather than the circular Kodak machine. His slide projector broke many years ago so they were in storage since.

Regretfully, I did not find about about the Nikon Ice technology until well after I scanned them in 2002. I used a Minolta Dimage slide scanner to scan them and used adobe photo shop to do auto color balence on them. It took me three hours a night for four months to scan them and do not look forward to repeating the process. Perhaps as the technology gets even better and the prices come down I will attempt to scan them again.

My Dad has always been a rather cheap bastard so I was pleasently surprised when I found he used ALL color film from 1956-79. There was not one B&W slide in the bunch!

  7. I also saw that game.  The Astros did win it, 2-1 in extra innings, if I remember correctly.  My wife bought me two tickets in the front row of the mezzanine, just behind third base, for each of the five pre-season games there just before the regular season started.  Those ten tickets cost $35.  The first game was on a Friday night with two day-night double-headers on the weekend.  According to the scoreboard, the game in the pictures must have been an afternoon game with the Yankees that the Astros won 3-2.  The scoreboard clock shows 3:53.  Thanks for the memories, jb4647.

My father is proud of stating that he was at the last Colt 45's game in Jeppeson stadium, the first Astros game in the Dome, the last Astro's game in the Dome and the first Astro's game in Enron field. He went to tons of games with his Dad (a friend of Hoffeinze) between 1965-72 and to this day is a season ticket holder in his retirement years. He took all the photos I've posted.

Saw some of the Astrodome, Sakowitz, and Joskes pics you also posted in other threads as well. All are fantastic. Please keep them coming!

How did your father get the arial shot of the Shamrock?

Here are a couple of photos that my Dad shot in the early 60's:

I'm not sure. I figured he shot it from a plane...probabably Continental. Speaking of which, here's a photo of my grandparents departing a Continental flight back in '62:
