  1. If they were trying to keep property values down/affordable when they started the Historic Districts, I can't really say it's been working. Lot value alone is up 25% in the last two years. Partially due to the overall Houston climate, but the fact is, that due to the HAHC decisions, the inventory of lots in the Heights is quite limited.

  2. there appears to be fairly new townhouses on a portion of this site. are they going to be knocked down?

I assume you're talking about the townhouses on Greenwich Place & Terrace? No, they are not part of the development. In fact, you can barely make them out in the rendering you replied to, right at the top, one-third from the left.

Lockmat, the apartments in the top right were originally part of the plan, but just as a phase-two (currently occupied by Allen House apts. that didn't get knocked down). My guess is that if folks are getting notices at the other Allen House's and GID wants to add apartments to the original plan, they will/are just going to build phases one and two at the same time.

  3. Anyone having issues with Google Chrome and HAIF:HD? When I go to the last page of the 2727 Kirby page (link) I get this big, red "Malware Detected!" page telling me the page contains content from "flashandburn.net"... I'm pretty sure this started when the forum was rolled over. Editor, let me know if you need a screen capture.

  4. My wife grew up in Arlington, TX (around where they started, I think) and when we found that they had expanded to Houston, we made a trek (we live off of Allen Parkway and went to the one at W. Little York & Hwy 6). It was worth it! When we were at Rice, we loved Goode Co. but as soon as we tried Otto's, Goode Co. didn't seem worth the extra $$. We still go to Otto's if we don't have the two hours needed to drive and eat, but if we have the time, we pilgrimage! Between the rolls and the sauce and the ribs and the all you can pile on veggies, Spring Creek is everything we want in a BBQ place (and not too expensive...) The downside is that it is a chain (-ish, family owned and only in TX, I think) and they all look alike. However, we're not picky about the surroundings if the food is good. And it is.

  5. We live on Tirrell St, on the backside of the development. It is a parking garage across the street (we were told it'll look nice), not a parking lot, but it was there in the original renderings. As for the green space, we're all for it, but it seems that most of it that was lost was in interior courtyards, something we probably couldn't use ourselves.

As for the variances (we get them by mail automatically since we live so close) IIRC, they are for small sight triangles at some of the intersections (something like 12' instead of the usual 15'). I'm all for that...12' is a lot better than the 3' the W Dallas & Tirrell intersection has now with those bushes...I'm halfway into W Dallas before I can see west-bound traffic!

What we are most excited for is our "Road to Kroger" (the diagonal road from W Dallas to W Clay)...we have a bit of a detour now. However, Marvy's Whole Foods just east of here will probably make that less of an issue.

Finally, do we think Regent Sq. will have a hotel? My guess is that is what the cul-de-sac just south of W Dallas is for.

  6. Just a question, why don't you guys use Directv? I have had Directv for many years in California as well as here and no real problems with every channel being digital.

    Two reasons:

    1) We've already sunk money into TiVo (yeah I know sunk cost, but still) and really like the interface

    2) We own a townhouse in a community that gets bulk services that we pay for in our maintenance (water, trash, and cable). So for us to get the HD from Comcast was only $20/month. Since they use the bulk package as our base, we only get charged the marginal.

I think we're going to stick with it...the only other thought we've had is Uverse. I don't like the prices, but feel that it is an innovation that should be supported. If we were starting from scratch (no TiVos) or they were more a la carte, or could stream more channels over the fiber, we'd probably would go with it.

  7. So I thought this might be a good thread for this.

We are TiVo devotees, and when we were getting an HDTV, we went and got a Series 3 at the same time. We added the HD package to our account and picked up two CableCards.

Anyways, our HD signal isn't very good. We've replaced the CableCards, and we don't think it is the TiVo (maybe positive thinking). Sometimes the picture is pixel-ated, and the sounds comes in and out, but we only see this on the HD channels, and only on a few of them (ABC, NBC, Golf/VS). It is rather intermittent (sometimes no more than 20 minutes, sometimes longer) but affects all the channels at the same time (the three above). I've had a tech out when it was acting up and he recommended changing the cards, which we did, but it only marginally improved the problem.

So we had a few questions for the forum:

    1) Anyone else use CableCards in Houston from Comcast? Do they seem to work?

    2) Any ideas on which step to take next? I know I have to go back to Comcast (at one point they offered to re-wire the cable from the pole to the house to the attic, where it splits), but does anyone know what could really affect this sort of signal degradation? Like quality of cable, or is this a purely decoding issue (Cable Cards/TiVo)?

    Thanks in advance.

  8. This is actually a good thing....the cable companies are just trying to put a negative spin on it because its going to hurt their sacred profit margins. Basically this will let you get whatever box you want and have the cable company put a little cable card into it to do the decoding. So, if you want a TIVO or some such you don't have to rent a cable box from the cable company to make it work.

Actually that's what I did and it it works great. For the bedrooms I have just the basic cable (up to channel 99 or something) on standard def TVs. In the living room we have a TiVo Series 3 with two cablecards. No messing around with the Comcast DVR or a cable box. It was a minor pain to set up (had to get a replacement for one of the cards), but now it works great. My complex has a bulk agreement with Comcast so we pay for basic cable with our HOA dues, and as such the digital channels and HD channels, with two cards is only $22/month.

  9. The area is now fenced off, and it looks like demolition should begin soon. I also noticed some signs regarding a public hearing, but I drove by too fast to notice a date.

The hearing was the 19th. Basically they want to get an allowance around setback and visibility triangles and want an exception to the maximum fire hose drag (will be sprinkled-entirely). Also, I think they wanted to re-plat the whole property in one piece from thirty.

  10. Stuff I miss from old HAR.com:

    1) Map search (I actually liked the one they had before the google map one)

    2) The personalized section (saved searchs, bookmarked listings)

    3) Being able to pick 10, instead of 5 per page

    4) Recent home sales (even with the ~$75k ranges, they had pictures)

    5) New listings search

    6) Open house search

    7) The map feature on a listing opening up a map where you could plot other properties, not Yahoo)

Things nice about the new HAR.com:

    1) Lot description

    2) Maint. fees on condos ($0.75/sqft @ the Huntingdon!)

  11. There's more to it than just a virus. Viruses don't cause 4 day outages within IT organizations that have a clue. Any decent IT organization would have been back up and running again in no more than 6 hours....24 hours at the most.

Exactly my point. If REALTORS wasn't the most protective, monopolistic system this side of Major League Baseball, then maybe they would have an IT staff that can do more than just post apologies. If REALTORS had any competition, fees would be lower and HAR.com would have been fixed days ago. Can't argue with capitialism.

  12. It now says,

"HAR is aware of the technical difficulties currently being experienced on HAR.com. We are working diligently to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of HAR.com."

If this doesn't represent everything that is wrong with the current REALTOR-based market, I don't know what does.
